(if you want to skip Cherone altogether, skip ahead to 4:20 in the video)
I've always maintained that Ed was at the top of his game 1994-1998. That's the sad part. BALANCE was filled with so much crap (in terms of lyrics/melodies)..."I CAN'T STOP LOVIN' YOU" (sung from the point-of-view of his ex-wife...only a self-absorbed twat would write something so ridiculous). But Ed's sound and playing were pretty amazing. He was playing his ass off on the two Roth songs in '96 (imagine a whole album of stuff like that...Jesus, that would have been a career high-point...I kept wishing they would pull out ME WISE MAGIC for one of the Dave/Wolf tours...it's in my Top 3 VH songs, sometimes my favorite VH song ever).

And...shitty as Cherone was (and he sucked...my God, I had no idea what he was going on about on songs like ONE I WANT or BALLOT OR THE BULLET)...but Ed sounded great. I've always said that you will find some of Ed's best and most-interesting playing on VAN HALEN III, but unfortunately, it's still among the band's worst albums (I still think FOR UNLAWFUL CARNAL KNOWLEDGE is worse and Ed sounds really bored on that album) because the vocalist is a complete fucking idiot with no clue what to do with this music. The only song on that album (again, flame away, I don't give a shit) that I legitimately like is JOSEPHINA. Those are some insanely-cool chord changes. Ed sounds great. The song's structure is great. I even dig the harmonies...even with that idiot singing (sorry, I just never got into EXTREME, minus a song or two). Ed was playing great in '98. Maybe it was the supposed sobriety. He sure seemed like a bitter pill, in terms of his attitude. He really over-estimated just how far fans would follow him after alienating both fan bases for no good reason.

It's just another case of "What could have been..." If Dave had stayed in '96 and they went on to a full album after the two BEST OF songs, it would have been something. There's no way they would have picked a fucking T.V. music writer to be the producer. They would have gotten a solid producer and made a great album. And it would have been different music for the most part (Ed stated several times that he started so many songs on III by writing music to fit the lyrics that Cherone was writing...that's one of the main reasons the album sounds so messy)...and it would have had a better, more solid band sound. What if, what if.

Sorry Zah, I will do better to insult Krusty in a different thread.

    In MOST different threads.
I was kind of hoping that maybe more of us would take a bit of a BROWN M&M approach. Write beautiful posts, testimonials to Ed & Dave, using creativity, passion and a little bit a wit... and then in the middle of such testimonials, remind everybody of how long it's been since Kristy's been laid...

Dave is on record saying he doesn't care for that song.

"Well, you know what? I think that song kind of meandered aimlessly." He goes on to suggest that song was "Commandeered more by Valerie Bertinelli"

Hey, musicians will bounce off each other musically. I have not listened to the entire III album. I have no desire to.

I listened to the van hagar albums (bought 5150 in 86 and roommates blasted the others out on the stereo upon release), but if I could have all of the output from 1986 to whenever without the screech of the Orange Goblin, or the lameness of Cherone (just my opinion....he is good at being Cherone, but Cherone's input does ZERO for me). In short, I would rather hear anything without Dave on it as instrumentals. No klown, no Cherona. Just the band. Or...with Dave, lol.

Goddammit. If 1996 would have happened, it might have been several albums and tours with Mikey still in the band. Mike's bass abilities always impressed the fuck out of me. He is a Musician's Musician. I feel he is underrated, as many people can't get past his former live auto-destruct-o-matic bass solos.

Don't get me wrong. You can easily see on the last video......I think it should be called "That's My Boy" due to Val's comment at the beginning....Wolfy was tearing it the fuck up! Dude is badass bassist. Christ-o-mighty.

But hey, I still prefer Mike for VH. Just my preference.

I saw a marked improvement and confidence in Wolfy between first and last tours with VH. Wow.

It has been 3187 days since Krusty got laid.

It is one thing to be the child of a rock star, but to actually be in the band with your Dad who is top dog in rock guitardom?
And to be the driving force in the reunion tours and album? I have lotsa respect for him.
I feel he took VH into the 21st-century in a way. The hand-off to the next generation.

On the Van Hagar tour in 1993 the band actually performed the song "Pleasure Dome" as an instrumental, without Hagar on stage. It was a considerable improvement..... even if they only played it as a 2 minute intro for Alex's drum solo....

I know they had to pull it out of him...he wasn't very happy with the music Eddie was playing him. But that's one of the things I love about the song...they finally found that MEETING POINT...and that tension...that's what made the band great. Dave pulling one way, Ed the other...they'd find a meeting point in the middle.

Do you remember where Dave said that? I'd be fascinated to read it. I've read almost nothing with Dave discussing the band's music...at least not in the last 15 years or so since he came back.

I can see the song not being his usual style. And I've often suspected he didn't love the song. But I just love it. It's modern Eddie, playing his ass off...and with that epic feel he was going for more in the mid-90s. And Dave is still being...Dave. Sounding brilliant. The backing vocal part when the chorus still gives me goosebumps.

PLEASURE DOME is a great piece of music. It truly is. FOR UNLAWFUL CARNAL KNOWLEDGE is my least-favorite VH album of them all. I'd take VHIII over that album in a heartbeat. But PLEASURE DOME is the shit...and even Hagar isn't bad on it.

Now hearing it as an instrumental truly gave it greater excellence.

I made a guitar for Ike Willis.(Frank Zappa guitarist/singer from Joe's garage) I toured with him a few times in the UK.
Here are pics of the guitar and the man met Eddie van Halen back in the days. See pic. It's Ike & Eddie.

Yep. It was on the Radio Rodeo Tour at WRIF in Detroit. I was outside the studio waiting and listening to the interview and it hit me like a ton of bricks when he said it. I loved that song the first time I heard it, and I love it to this day. I love the vocals, the harmonies and Ed does a SMOKIN' guitar solo towards the end. I'm sure the interview is available on YouTube these days. I posted the whole thing at DDLR and more than likely here, at one time. One of the DJ's I know, that actually still works there, gave it to me on CD, direct from their board. I have it on my phone in my iTunes too. I listened to it yesterday because I wanted to get the quote right. Somebody asks Dave about a VH reunion and he talks about Ed wasting so much time. It's disheartening. We can only hope to hear some of the stuff Ed was working on in his studio, while he was wasting all that time.

Wiki (Kristy's favorite!) says that Dave re-wrote Glenn Ballard's scratch lyrics.

Roth discarded Ballard's sketch lyrics and wrote his own, and denied the suggestion to get help from songwriter Desmond Child.
The lyrics to "Me Wise Magic," written by David Lee Roth, were based on an initial set of lyrics by the song's producer Glen Ballard, which Roth insisted on rewriting to suit his own unique style. Written in first-person, "Me Wise Magic" presents a series of questions and statements about self-awareness, religious belief and superstitions - alternating between the points of view of God and a human being.
The last thing Dave needed was Desmond Child...

I also seem to remember someone not liking Ballard as a producer. Could have been Hagar though.

I like MWM. I hear anger and aggression from Ed.

But I never understood Ed's desire to kiss Ballad's ass so much. Super-producer??

Ed kept citing Alanis Morissette as evidence that the guy was brilliant, producing that.

I don't think I can name another album from the 90s that I hate as much as Alanis and her pretentious shit music. It made me sick...the sound of her awful, pretentious, "I have so much feeling and depth in my soul"-style garbage.

By the way, thanks again...going to fucking blare the Hollywood Bowl gig in my home theater later...although there's a chance I might delay that by a night and instead blast GOLDFINGER. My wife just told me about Sean and I'm fucking hating October 2020.

Pluto TV has an 007 channel. We'll see if it goes all Connery soon. They even run Never Say Never Again.

NEVER SAY NEVER AGAIN is entertaining...in an 80s way. It just kind of sucks compared to the others. I'm one of those Bond fans who grew up with the Moore films...so even though I of course agree that the Connery's generally are the best, I also love many of the Moore films (SPY WHO LOVED ME and FOR YOUR EYES ONLY particularly).

ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE is my all-time favorite. I would say, outside of that one, GOLDFINGER and FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE are the best Bond films. I'm watching HALLOWEEN (the original, not the Rob Zombie bullshit) tonight with my family...but hopefully tomorrow, gonna crank out FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE in the home theater.

This month has just fucking sucked donkey balls.

As a bit of a Bond obsessive myself I think your taste is good although I would add Casino Royale to that,

NSNA has it's moments but a lot of the problem with is the lack of Bondian stuff that they didn't have the rights to use so no theme, no intro no John Barry and of course it's the Thunderball plot again,

It being the 21st century someone on the interwebs has already redone the music, check how much better it should/could have been... I think there is a version of the whole movie done like this somewhere.

Sesh, I would not be surprised if someone re-edited the film.

There is a website I know of where you can find craploads of re-edited or remastered movies of all kinds.

For instance, George Lucas refuses to release the original versions of the first three Star Wars films on blu-rays.....the blu-ray editions you can buy are the ones where he threw in all the CGI and changed a lot about the films.

Anyway, I was able to get the original versions on blu-ray, remastered no less.

There are many fan edit versions of stuff like the original Blade Runner.

Amazing how technology has unlocked itself to allow the average human to do great things with audio/video.

There are three motherfucking STOOGES that would love nothing more than to rewrite VH history. Fortunately, it's not possible!

    1. Sammy Clichegar. It fucking KILLS him, that he has been left out since 2004. It KILLS him that his last performances with the band were DISASTERS and that he nearly had a guitar broken over his head in his last show ever with the band.

    2. Bertt. The VH Links Emporer of being even a BIGGER, WETTER, STINKIER PUSSY, than Clichegar himself.

    3. Eddie Trunk. The second biggest Clichegar suck dick left. (second to Bertt).

I commend Wolfgang on floating the idea to his Dad. Obviously we will never know if it would have come to fruition, unless Dave comes out and says himself, whether he'd have done it or not. But I don't believe he would have. I'm not so sure a boatload of cash and cocaine could have cuntvinced Dave to do it.

I didn't bother with this interview either. Can't stand both of these fatties.

How many interviews has Spammy done since Ed passed?? And its only been a little over a month!

He can't seem to shut up and neither can Trunk.

Other than releasing the Somewhere Over the Rainbow Bar and Grill song (as a tribute to Ed), releasing his Roth project online comic and few more drawings on his Instagram page, Dave has been as silent as Alex.

    Yet, Spammy keeps yapping.

I understand in the interview Sambo says he's reached out to Al many times after Ed passed - but no response.

    LOL

    Al hates Sam.

So apparently back in 1978 Eddie stole a copy of The Dickies debut EP from Dickies guitarist Stan Lee, who was going to give the record to Ozzy, because they covered "Paranoid" on the record. Eddie grabbed the record and stuck it in his guitar case. Hey why not, it was collectible white vinyl, and actually a decent record....
