Well, and that's the thing...Roth was very explicit in that these would be his final shows anywhere, ever. I didn't interpret his retirement announcement in any other way: after these Vegas shows, he was done performing, period.

These shows were billed as such, and people bought tickets believing it was such. Even with the amount of bands/acts that have undertaken what turned out to have been bullshit farewell tours before and if anybody's farewell announcement should be taken at face value or with a grain of salt or whatever, one would like to think Roth was being direct enough and honest enough when he said these Vegas shows were it.

And, yeah, doubtless some people were travelling from far and wide to go, and travel to Vegas ain't cheap...nor are lodgings.

So, for Dave to give some "shit happens" half-assed response...yeah, were I one of those who bought tickets and laid out non-refundable expense money to go see the guy, I'd be more than a bit pissed.

Don't worry, though: Sammy Hagar just told Blabbermouth that he's willing to perform lead vocal duties for Roth's upcoming farewell concert series...so you guys who bought tix just head out to Vegas...the Red Rocker has got you covered! Everybody, altogether now

Although if I really think about it - inasmuch as Roth's 'career' going forward should actually warrant ANY thought, which is to say by this point it really shouldn't, because expending said thought is a waste of time - why SHOULD Roth give a fuck about cancelling the shows in terms of any inconvenience for the ticket holders re: their travel expenses? Roth's career in terms of performing has basically been done since Van Halen's last tour in 2015. The half-witted fantasy about Dave 'reuniting the EEAS band, man!' couldn't even happen for a one-off gig in a fucking Los Angeles club. Pre-covid, Dave did a similar Vegas stint to the one that just got cancelled, then did a brief opening slot for KISS 2020.

Dave announced his retirement from performing last fall and said his upcoming Vegas gigs would be his last. So, now that those gigs are cancelled, I'd tend to doubt Dave is overly concerned with whatever ill will has been generated toward him from the ticket buyers: it's not as if he needs to restore any good will with them going forward, because there isn't any forward or down the line to look forward to. And the truth of the matter is that even WITHOUT the explicit retirement announcement there wasn't anything to look forward to down the line with Dave in terms of live appearances.

Dave got old, can't do it anymore. That's all, folks.

I'm not sure I want to see anything for longer than 2 1/2 hours at this point, movie gig or sport.

I actually had to look up who Carrie Bradshaw was (I'm aware of but have never seen the show the character is on): even though I now know who you were referencing, I'm still unsure if I should feel complimented or insulted.

I mean, I'm a middle-aged, slightly chubby American male. As such, I'm obviously far better looking than the actress who plays Carrie Bradshaw, so I assume you are referring to the Bradshaw character being a hack writer...and THAT part is certainly true enough...

I was forced to watch it through the 90s and it's come back again recently.

I heard a joke recently - 'What does COVID and Sex and the City have in common. They both keep coming back worse and worse.'

She often narrated these kind of tortured sentences and for some reason that one you posted made it pop into my head. It's a great joke if you know the references...

I still like and go to lots of stuff (plague permitting) but that Bruce Springsteen thing that more is always better becomes less good the older you get. I'm meant to be seeing what passes for GNR this summer and I really would not want to be standing at an outdoor gig (possibly in the rain) for 3 1/2 hours.

Rather than making a day of it I'll try and turn up close to headline showtime with as many vodka miniatures deposited around my body that I can manage safely through security.

With movies before going to the cinema I do now factor in the length and if it's really long that can make me stream it instead. It's not a prostate issue or anything like that(yet) but it is maybe a bit age related you get used to home comforts a bit.

I used to go to rock festivals, the 83 US Festival being one of them. That’s a young person’s sport. Sitting out in a field all day, half drunk, half stoned and getting sun burned doesn’t appeal to me now. Nor does skiing powder bowls in minus 20F temperatures and I used to think that was fun.

"tortured sentences" does describe my writing to a tee...and then I keep throwing ellipses in every sentence, as if that makes it any better...

I can tell Dave drew the frog. That’s his art style. Come on Dave. Your fans drove and flew a long ways and some even extended their stay in Vegas hoping to see the next show. They deserve a real explanation and some appreciation or they no longer will be fans of yours. You lost me. Appreciated what you did with VH and liked some of your solo stuff but currently I think you kinda suck.

I can see where a reasonable person wanting to attend one of the shows should have - at the very least - laid out the money for extra flight/hotel cancellation insurance just in case: it's not as if covid is a new thing anymore.

But...yeah, Roth's shoulder-shrug "shit happens" explanation seems a bit out of character for him. Though having said that, I'm not sure Roth has to care much about letting his fan base down these days, in that it isn't as if Roth needs to retain any particular level of goodwill with his fans re: future tours or future releases.

It does look as though the shows could well have ended up shutting down for COVID anyway. There as has been a huge spike in cases in Vegas over the last week and many of the shows have had to shut down due to staff shortages.

Fuck that lame excuse bullshit. Dave doesn't need a crew, or staff.

All Dave would need to do is sit on a stool and strum the Ice Cream Man chords and tell long, rambling, nonsensical stories in front of a large screen that has pictures of Roth strolling along with his sheepdogs in the hills.

Oh, wait, he already did that 10 years ago on the ADKOT tour...

Most entertainers would put out an explanation. If it’s COVID then say so and show some empathy. People bought plane tickets and booked hotel rooms. Flying right now kinda blows. Show some class for once and stop being the eccentric weirdo for a moment.

Retirement announced, executed, and under way... final shows seemed like a grand idea, cancelled like a Two-bit Ho™ having a bad hair day...

Seriously Dave..? Appears his professional standards have dipped lower than a snake's belly in a tire rut...

Van Halen is history. The Toastmaster General™ has closed the club... Now what..?

Book deals, maybe an occasional appearance on Stern, and a possible gallery exhibition of his juvenile art. All for nominal fees.

Nah, they leave a mighty legacy. Six and a half good albums worth.

Which, you know...not necessarily expecting Roth to make some emotionally-laden explanation for the cancellations because THAT would kinda ring false...but his response to all of it was this sort of fobbed-off "whatever": at least had he played the Vegas gigs, Roth would have went out with a bang; the half-assed "sorry about your luck" cancellation response comes across like he's ending it with a whimper.

But, we don't always get to dictate our finishes, I suppose.

    That's life. Bob-ba-bop-bah zippidy-doo.

This might be a matter of perspective.

Apparently some of her fans weren't quite happy with her little pity party cancellation video:

Amid unsold tickets, cancellations and Covid excuses that don't stack up, it's no wonder fans who
spent thousands flying to the US only for her to pull out at the last minute aren't going easy on her.

    https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...caused-it.html

    But since you're already here...

Adele tells fans who are in Vegas for her show to visit her gift store still selling merchandise
despite gig cancellation which cost them THOUSANDS - then retracts free drink voucher while
Facetiming fans after realizing they're underage

    https://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbi...residency.html

or maybe there's more to it...

What DID cause Adele's Vegas meltdown? Singer said to have halted residency because
managers 'wanted 60-strong choir' to perform Skyfall opening number when she asked for
    'low-key' production

    https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...-meltdown.html

She may've been better off with a frog cartoon. Least then we wouldn't have had to see those gawd-awful
guitar picks stuck on the ends of her fingers....
