Some musicians play with their eyes. My wife has a friend and you can hand her the sheet music to anything and she can play it just like it's written. She can't write a song though. She can't play be ear. But man can she read.

Other musicians play with their ear. They have perfect pitch. They can hear someone play and figure it out real quick and copy it.

Not all players are composers. They play what other people play really well. Composers are the people who come up with music in their head. Several have said they have no idea where it comes from, it just comes. Everyone is trying to find the magical trick to writing great songs but it's a big mystery. Some people have the gift. Others don't.

As far as copying a tone goes people never look at the sound engineer in the studio might have had a lot to do with it. During the 84 tour I was right on the barricade right in front of Ed's microphone stand. I could hear his stage backline more than I could hear what was coming out of the PA. The first thing I noticed is his stage guitar tone was way different than what I heard on the records. The delays and echos weren't there. I wasn't hearing Don Landee. It just sounded like a cranked Marshall running hard and heavy with Ed playing through it. I thought it was cool because man. I'm hearing Ed for real and not through a bunch of studio equipment.

But that rig was simple. He has his MXR phaser and flanger on the front of it. He had a shit load of Marshalls and a few Ohmite Variacs to plug them into. He running them around 89 volts give or take (whatever sounded best for the house voltage). Run into a load box and run the line signal to H-H power amps and those run all the stage cabs. That's it. It sounded great. But there was no magical amp or special black box. They were stock Marshall Super Lead 100's from various years. Some had the square switches and other's had the old toggle switches. There was one with the Tolex peeled off that Ed favored. I think it was a 72. But it that one wasn't working he had something like eight more he could use.

I'd say that's true, although in terms of electric guitar if a technically able guitarist is playing a shitty axe through a shitty amp the amplified result just in terms of the sheer sound won't be great.

Ed didn't have, as you say, any magic effects pedals or super-secretly modified amps...certainly not in the early days or before he had his own signature lines of gear.

Doubtless, back when Ed was learning how to build and modify guitars and amps, his equipment would have sounded a little bit different the same way anybody else who was doing that would have: once you alter the gear from when you bought it off the rack, obviously the sound is going to change somewhat.

Even in terms of the live stuff, all Ed was really using was a bit of phaser, bit of flanger and some delay in terms of effects.

The "brown sound" was a great tone, but it was never one I found impossible to duplicate using stock equipment.

Assuming the guitar has a reasonably good setup and is in tune a good guitarist will still sound good on it. You can give a shitty guitarist a great guitar and they still will sound like shit.

Stella Rose. Never heard of her? That's because you cretins never listen to anything beyond 1985. She is the daughter of rock god Dave Gahan and it clearly shows

Wargasm is a "band" that simply does not give a fuck. Albeit they are limey, okay half limey because the "chick" (Name: Milkie Way. Name: Rachel Hastings) is half-Irish and therefore would have no problem punching you in your MAGA Boomer face. I like them simply because music needs violence, murder, mayhem and SATAN and less limey shit say like Belle & Sebastian (who are really Scottish). New album coming out which from what I heard is way better than the arthritic Stones horseshit.

So they may tour. They may not. Possibly with Poppy?*

    *fingers crossed.
