    Lake Erie

According to men and some women who like to wear white lab coats and examine things, Lake Erie is "the shallowest, and therefore the warmest, of the five Great Lakes, is uniquely vulnerable to algal blooms. Like most other water bodies suffering from blooms, the lake is overloaded with nutrients, forming the perfect breeding ground for a bacteria known to poison pets, contaminate drinking water and create oxygen-deprived “dead zones” that kill aquatic life."

Eerie to look at, eh, kids?

Now here is a big word for some of you but Toxic cyanobacteria also know as the Ohio shithole state "toxic algae mascot" developed after a drinking water plant in (where else?) Toledo, Ohio, found dangerous levels of toxins during a routine test, and the city declared the tap water undrinkable. Hundreds of thousands of people were left scrambling to find safe water until Toledo lifted the ban more than two days later.

    But did they?

“It’s like the worst case scenario,” said some person wearing a lab coat who works at some University somewhere.

Yes, Lake Erie is a danger to the American way of life. Soon the toxic algae sludge will overgrow the banks and invade suburban Ohio and quickly spread elsewhere like Ice 9 did in that Vonnegut novel thus killing all life on earth. Don't say I didn't warn you.

Blue-green algae found in Pikeview Reservoir

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — A popular fishing spot in Colorado Springs tested positive for a species of algae harmful to humans and pets.

The Pikeview Reservoir located in central Colorado Springs tested positive Friday for blue-green algae, also known as Cyanobacteria. While the reservoir is still safe for fishing, humans and pets are prohibited from entering the water until it is cleared.

“We decided to go ahead and implement our strategy of removing it from the source and start posting signage to let people know this is occurring,” Lisa Walters, Source Water Protection specialist at Colorado Springs Utilities said.

The reservoir’s water is mainly used as a water source for the city but is now closed off until the supply is clear of algae. Walters said the city’s water supply is not affected. She said the toxic bacteria can be harmful to both humans and pets if ingested or touched.

“With those toxins, if you contact it with your skin you could have irritation of your skin, you’ll have rashes,” Walters said. “But if you ingest it that’s where it could actually impair your health.”

Sickness including nausea, vomiting, rash, irritated eyes, seizures, and breathing problems could occur following exposure to the blue-green algae in the water. Anyone with symptoms after exposure should contact their doctor or veterinarian.

Walters said the water is still okay to fish in, as long as you clean the fish thoroughly.

She said algae is becoming more common across the state, caused by hot weather and stagnant water.

“When we are concerned about it though is when it starts to come out of balance and starts to bloom and actually we see high increase levels of it,” Walters said.

Colorado Springs Utilities will continue to test each of their reservoirs monthly and Pikeview Reservoir will be tested weekly.

For updates on Pikeview Reservoir’s water conditions, you can visit their website.
    Drink it in, baby...

Yeah.... algae blooms in lakes are nothing unusual...

Not like there's much swimming or boating going on around here in late October anyway...

The Zebra mussels were brought in attached to ships. They invaded both Lake Erie and Lake St. Clair. They filter the water making it more clear. This has contributed to more sunlight reaching the bottom of these shallow lakes, and promoting the growth of vegetation. Yes, there are the issues Kristy posted above, but it has also helped make Lake St. Clair one of the most premier bass fishing lakes in the Country.

But, yes. Both Cleveland and Buffalo are shitholes.

Exactly. And WikiNiki must have over read this part:

Went kayaking Wednesday, not into the lake but in a nature preserve and marina that connects to the lake. Surprised how many boats are still in the water. I'm sure a lot of them will come out this weekend. Marina here is still pretty full, too.

November 1st I'll be awakened at sunrise by gunshots. No, not Alec Baldwin, it'll be duck hunters out on the lake.

Stopped for a great Lake Erie perch sandwich and a beer after kayaking for two hours.

Western end of the lake is shallower. We don't have the algae issue here. Our water intake is far enough out.

Lake Erie in the 70’s made the national news a lot due to it’s horrible pollution problems. The Cleveland river was so polluted it actually caught fire. So these images have stuck in people’s minds but in 2021 the pollution situation is much better. I used to live on Lake Ontario where Lake Erie flows into. We had great sunsets over the lake but the fish and game advised us not to eat too many fish caught from the lake. This was in the early 80’s. I don’t know if they still advise that.

    There's an advisory that says

Most Ohio sport fish are safe to eat ONE MEAL PER WEEK, unless there is a more or less restrictive advisory outlined in the Ohio Sport Fish Consumption Advisory. ODH advises this general statewide advisory due to low level mercury contamination.
Perch is okay to eat twice a week. Steelhead trout, flathead catfish, and northern pike are once a month.

Most of the Lenten fish fries around here serve perch and are BUSY.

Most of the steelhead guys are catch and release. At least the guys I work with are.

My nephew would catch monster catfish at their marina using McNuggets as bait. Like one right after the other. Cheap entertainment.

One meal a week is recommended for fish caught in the Cuyahoga and Ashtabula rivers. Pretty sure the Ashtabula had high mercury content. The Cuyahoga starts in Middlefield in Amish country and is Akron's water supply. I guess it's okay to drink the water but not eat the fish.

The Amish charter fishing boats in late summer. The local Air BNB's have been full of Amish the last couple summers. Not hard to get here via the bike path if they aren't paying someone for a ride.
