    Dave's New Backing Band Auditions

If the Toastmaster General won't entertain us... let's entertain ourselves!

Find an interesting cover of a Van Halen or Diamond Dave solo tune on the web from a group worthy of backing the Diamond One. Let's relaunch Dave's career...

I chose this one for the multi-cultural elements... the solo part at 1:55 is most notable and a tip to Dave's southern California roots.

    You know what I'd like?

I'd like to see a contemporary rock act come out with original material that turns me on as much as Van Halen did 40 years ago.

Or even an established rock act still managing to put out original material that turns me on as much as Van Halen did 40 years ago.

No more youtube cover acts or youtube guitarists sitting in a room covering someone else's stuff.

I want to hear something new that is as compelling as Van Halen was 40 years ago.

Are my expectations just set way too high?

Or is it that these amateurs have the equipment and the look and even the ability to cover a Van Halen tune, yet not enough ability to come up with something original that is decent?

There’s a problem. You used to be able to make good money playing school dances. That was a motive to put a band together. When large sound systems became affordable enough that motive was killed. But you had the dream of getting a record deal. That fueled people to play the club circuit. But there are no record deals because there is no money in recorded music. The whole chemistry of the clubs, the radio DJ’s, the bands and the record labels is all gone. Now it’s masturbate yourself on You Tube and show off your bedroom playing skills. Most the people would be boring as fuck in a live environment.

I hear ya Terry & Nitro...

Yes your expectations are too high to a degree... look at all the great rock tunes that lifted the bar over the last 50 years. That's some tall order to find something within the rock genre that can light the fires like VH did in the day.

I'm sure there's some really great rock music being written and produced today... the real challenge is sorting through the noise to find it. Then try finding a place to experience it live that's enjoyable too.

None of that hippie boring recycled bullshit. No covers, no gimmicks (okay, a bit gimmicky), and no Phish. Just marketed entertainment.

No shortage of good musicians. Nashville is full of them. But nothing really all that entertaining is coming out of there. The LA scene is dead. Austin has bellyflopped. Video games and the internet and the consolidation of media have killed the organic dynamics of entertainment. It’s become very boring.

I think that is correct in that there must be some creative original rock music being made somewhere...but it is that sorting through the noise, where I wouldn't know where to start.

So Lady Gaga-lite is the answer?

Although honestly a 2nd rate Lady Gaga would be infinitely preferrable to seeing yet another amateur rock band covering a Van Halen tune, or the 10 millionth youtuber guitar player wanking Eruption in their bedroom.

It was admittedly a snarky backhanded comment re: the obvious Gaga visual influence, but it wasn't a criticism...

...fuck, man, I don't need a generational (or even a simple short-term) family curse...please let Poppy know I meant no harm...

...if it IS to be a family curse, can I at least select which family members the curse could be directed toward? Because honestly there are more than a few said members (they know who they are and what they did and didn't do) I would lose zero sleep over re: THEM being cursed...it wasn't exactly Flowers In The Attic with my family, but it was hardly the fuckin' Brady Bunch, either.

Just don't curse me. I'm already paying for what I did.
