Digging a bit, I think there are different versions. The Moutain Ration is the full day of calories ration used since Afghanistan and developed for Spetnaz but seems to be the basis of their now rare ration packs, here's a review:

Having one pack seems like a bit of a PITA to carry for the day after opened. About two US MRE's will keep you going, three will prevent you from "going" as they're all dehydrating a bit...

Right now MRE's are sky high on Amazon but maybe it's the weather changing towards outdoor activities. I always think about buying some in fall in case we lose power and are snowed in, but there seems to be no advantage over having some cans around...

A fifth Russian General was killed when his chopper was shot down at an airfield near Kherson...

That might be a quarter of all the Russian general officers in the Ukraine folks....

I was listening to a Ukranian journalist today whose mother lives in the east of Ukraine and identifies as being Russian and watches Russian TV for her news. She doesn't believe her own daughter when she says that her apartment is being rocked by shells because she 'knows' that the Russian army is not attacking any civilian areas. Years of Russian TV propaganda is incredibly powerful.

It was a heavy sealed pack of rations. Some stuff like the chocolate bar had the Russian Army logo on it but most seemed to be commercial stuff in foil or Mylar packs. Inside was a stove you folded into shape, some fuel pellets and waterproof matches. We just used the exhaust manifold on the boat engine to heat the food packs. Ha! Ha! That’s actually an old snowmobiling trick.

It’s way cheaper to get canned or bulk food at a warehouse store than it is to buy MRE’s. MRE’s are nice to throw in a pack or have in a place that’s wet like a white water raft. Our guide provided the Russian MREs so I have no idea where he got them. That was boat food. We ate shashlik in camp. They sell beer in two liter pop bottles over there. You could buy a two litter bottle of 9% beer.

Off-roading, too. Burritos on the trail.

I usually just take sandwiches but last time I wheeled I got a couple burgers from the food truck that was there.

They sell this thing called a Muff Pot you strap on your snowmobile muffler and it cooks hot dogs as you run down the trail. Of course you stick your hot dog in the muff to warm it. So logical. Ha! Ha!

    Way older

The short story “The System of Dr. Tarr and Prof. Fether” by Edgar Allan Poe appeared in the November 1845 issue of “Graham’s Magazine”. The tale was set in a private hospital for the mentally ill, and the adage was spoken by the nominal head of the institution.

“You are young yet, my friend,” replied my host, “but the time will arrive when you will learn to judge for yourself of what is going on in the world, without trusting to the gossip of others. Believe nothing you hear, and only one half that you see.

A shit right wing trope that Orwell never wrote nor even implied. He was a journalist FFS...

During the 2016 general election campaign, a meme circulated on Twitter in which a giant fist used chains to manipulate unwitting Americans who had television sets for heads. It was not subtle. The text beneath read: “The people will believe what the media tells them they believe – George Orwell.” In fact, Orwell never wrote those words, nor do they sound like something he would have written. For one thing, “the media” did not enter common usage until after his death in 1950, and this stickler for correct prose would never have used the singular. For another, he had too much faith in ordinary people to portray them as gullible puppets. A report commissioned by the Senate Intelligence Committee later discerned that the phony quotation had been disseminated by the Internet Research Agency, Russia’s most prolific troll farm. People will believe what a Twitter meme tells them they believe.

I kept the heater and used it on a can of stew. Worked great. One fuel pellet actually brought it to a boil. So you have plenty of BTU’s to have three hot meals and some hot coffee or tea. The Russian equivalent of Gatorade is funky. It’s peach flavor. The guide was telling us in the old Soviet days they drank pickle brine instead of sports drinks. Ha! Ha! If you had a sporting competition you ate beets a half hour before to get your blood flowing and during a long match you would drink pickle brine. Those were the Soviet athletic enhancers.

Actually the chemical heater in the American MREs work pretty good too. I used one on a hunting trip when it was really cold and it still heated up the food pack.

It’s always been manipulative. William Randolph Hearst had a huge amount of control over what the public got fed. We have a similar problem today because only a few companies own most the broadcast media. They put on a controlled opposition kabuki theater but it leads all to the same place. More money and power for those who own the media while you have the public wasting time in partisan arguments and whatever disaster you want to wag the dog with. Who controls the media controls politics.

That’s why so few people own most everything and that political drivel that promises to close the gap just widens it more and you usually get a war now and then to keep you occupied.

Russian generals are dying in Ukraine partly because they are struggling to get conscripts to follow orders, report says

Ukraine says it's killed at least five Russian generals, an unusually high total for senior officers.

A European diplomat told Foreign Policy that poor communications were leaving commanders exposed.
Russia is sustaining high overall casualties in its invasion of Ukraine.

Russian generals are moving into advanced positions leaving them exposed to attacks because they're struggling to get their orders through to conscripts, a European official told Foreign Policy magazine.

Ukrainian officials have said Ukrainian forces have killed at least five Russian generals so far. Such a toll is unusually high for such senior officers.

On Saturday, Ukraine said its forces had killed Lt. Gen. Andrei Mordvichev when they struck an airfield near Kherson, one of the few Ukrainian cities Russia has managed to occupy.

On Sunday, Russian officials said a senior naval commander, Andrei Paly, had been killed by Ukrainian forces near the besieged city of Mariupol.

A European diplomat briefed on intelligence reports told Foreign Policy that a failure of Russian communications systems was leaving generals exposed to interception and targeted strikes.

The diplomat also said that difficulties in getting conscripted troops to follow orders were making them take positions close to the front.

The Russian military is using conscripts alongside its regular military in the invasion of Ukraine, despite having promised that it would not. Experts have said conscripted troops are often poorly trained and have low morale.

"They're struggling on the front line to get their orders through," the European diplomat said. "They're having to go to the front line to make things happen, which is putting them at much greater risk than you would normally see."

The diplomat said that about 20% of Russia's top commanders in Ukraine had been killed in the conflict, reducing its military effectiveness and stalling its advance.

The theory corroborates a report published Monday by Insider's Christopher Woody.

The report cited a US official as saying Russian generals were at inherently greater risk than their US counterparts because of a Russian command structure that gives lower-ranking officers less autonomy and demands closer involvement of generals.

US officials believe that about 7,000 Russian troops have been killed in the fighting so far. On Monday, a Russian tabloid reported, citing the country's defense ministry, that the death toll was higher than 9,000, but it subsequently retracted the claim.

Daily Kos has a nice, updated blog on this and we are now seeing this war transition to Ukrainian counteroffensives against largely static Russian forces using artillery and air power as their conventional forces wither without any substantial reserve. The Ukrainian forces are improving operationally and may be aided by various NATO special operations advisers and could be transitioning into an army capable of maneuver warfare:

Overall, Russian combat effectiveness is severely depleted. Leaked Russian numbers peg their manpower losses at 9,861 dead and 16,153 injured. Roughly 26,000 out of 190,000 in the original invading force is an attrition rate of around 14%, with casualties heavily skewed towards combat troops. Remember only about 15% of the invading force is actually combat, the rest support. Rob Lee on Twitter is tracking Russian obituaries, and if you scroll through, you’ll notice that they skew heavily toward VDV forces—that’s Russia’s supposedly elite airborne troops, who have specifically deployed in this northwest Kyiv approach.

Russia is in deep shit. They’ve lost their best troops on this front, reportedly replacing them with conscripts and other scrubs. Now they’re under heavy assault by Ukrainians in an area they’ve had trouble resupplying from the very beginning. There is a very real chance this entire Russian line collapses under the pressure, not just putting Kyiv out of range of artillery, but delivering a crushing blow to Russia’s entire game plan.

If these numbers are true, this shows shitty medical care after wounding. If you have about 16,200 wounded, the deaths should be about a third at around 5-6,000 tops. The Russians either are not evacuating their wounded quickly or units are being completely wiped out in savage ambushes...

This is actually from a Russian TV channel that was state sponsored that flashed these casualty numbers that were quickly taken down...

That movie was crap. Even that cheesy Rocky movie where Drago gets his ass kicked was better.

Putin sent in Chechens. He bought them off and uses them like the British use Gurkas. The thing is, Putin would love to get rid of them. So that might explain the poor medical care. Use em up as cannon fodder.

The original Red Dawn was cheesy, but still a classic. The remake with North Korea as the "bad guys" was pathetic. I saw Red Dawn for the first time at the Yakima Valley Mall cinema and it was disturbing how much the rednecks cheered at certain scenes.

When the Russian fans started supporting Rocky was possibly the most cheesy deluded ridiculous thing that has ever been put on film.

I've never watched Red Dawn, I assumed it would be shit.

The Ukrainians are now on the offensive north of Kyiv and have retaken some towns and control 80% of a key suburb. The Russians are pulling the last of their trained, competent manpower out of places like occupied eastern Georgia and have completely stopped around Kyiv and are in defensive positions. The Russian Ministry of Offense is now saying they've met their main objectives and are now focusing on securing Donbas in the East. This maybe a signal that Russia is looking for a way out...

    Ukraine’s Three-to-One Advantage
It’s not technology or tactics that has given Ukrainian fighters their greatest edge.

I don't think most people have quite realized yet how much of a game changer this is yet at all. Everything has changed.
