‘I Simply Refuse’: Wiretaps Catch Putin’s Troops Breaking Own Tanks in Sabotage Scheme

Russian fighters have been sharing tips with one another about how to deliberately damage their own equipment and hamper Russian President Vladimir Putin’s war plans in Ukraine, according to recordings of alleged Russian troops’ phone calls that the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) intercepted.

In one regiment, one Russian soldier allegedly said they’ve been pouring sand into the tanks’ fuel systems to clog them up.

“I don't follow stupid orders, I simply refuse,” one fighter can be heard telling a comrade. “The motherf*cker sent me to tanks, motherf*cking piece of shit. I f*cked it up and that's it.”

When the fellow Russian soldier on the other end of the line heard the unit wasn’t punished for the insubordination, he indicated he might repeat the tactic later in his own unit.

Another Russian fighter shared with a family member that he and his comrades deliberately damaged their tank—the last one left in their regiment—to interfere with an attack plan, as well, according to another intercept the SBU shared.

“We have one tank left in the regiment,” he said. “In short, we broke our tank ourselves in the morning so as not to go.”

Throughout the invasion, Russian battle plans haven’t gone the way Putin has wanted them to, leaving Putin frustrated and on edge, according to a senior U.S. defense official. One of his major goals was to capture the capital, Kyiv, and install a pro-Putin puppet government. But his troops faltered outside of the capital for days and had countless logistics problems, and in particular had troubles with the fueling, according to the defense official.

And while some U.S. officials have said for weeks that it’s at times been unclear if Russia’s military’s failings are due to lack of planning or just poor execution of plans, the intercepted calls suggest in some cases the answer is much simpler. The troops themselves are disobeying orders and sabotaging the war effort on purpose.

A mainstay of the war has been images of Russians abandoning their equipment and weapons. Russian military morale has been low from the beginning of the invasion, and it’s not getting any better; Russian troops have begun posting on social media begging for donations to the war effort, showing a side-by-side comparison between their dismal first-aid kits and the Ukrainians.

Putin Put on Blast Over Pathetic War Gear for Russian Troops

The Russian war effort isn’t only being hampered from the inside. Inspired by the Russians’ intercepted phone calls, Ukraine’s government encouraged other Russian troops to disobey orders and refuse to attack, echoing earlier calls to surrender and abandon the war path.

“The SBU welcomes this practice,” the SBU said in a statement Friday. "But even it can be improved—just ‘give up’ and leave the war in Ukraine!”

Ukrainians have been putting up a stiff resistance from day one of the war, surprising Putin along the way, according to the Pentagon.

The Pentagon, too, has been providing key intelligence that has helped the Ukrainians target key Russian assets, including the Russian warship the Moskva, which sank in the Black Sea after Ukrainians hit it in a missile strike in April, according to The Washington Post.

Pentagon Press Secretary John Kirby has acknowledged the intelligence-sharing effort but said the U.S. had no part in the targeting.

They were showing clips of Russian couples from the "Patriotic War" (WWII) and some one inserted a pic of Bonnie and Clyde:

If you want a low profile and small turret that’s how you have to design it. The Soviet doctrine was to make a lot of them and overwhelm your enemy with numbers. But the idea is not to get hit on the side or behind. With the kind of tank killing weapons available now tanks are pretty much obsolete.

Anyways the T-72 is an obsolete weapon. War is asymmetrical these days. The US very well could be getting lured into a war in Eastern Europe as a setup. It benefits China.

Yes the Soviet wanted a low profile tank but the main issue is that they wanted to cut crews from 4 to 3 by using an autoloader to save the dwindling manpower. Nearly all Western tanks have a 4th crewman as a loader. There are pluses and minuses to both but the NATO tanks will have a higher rate of fire at least for the first hour or so. The autoloader may be faster after that since it doesn't wear down. The issue is ammo stowage were all Russian designed autoloader tanks need the ammo under the turret to feed it. The first gen of autoloaders could take a crewman's arm off if he wasn't watching but since I think they've put in some safety protcals.

The tank in itself isn't obsolete. The Russian tactics of leaving them unsupported is. There have been good AT weapons since the 50's and the US used the TOW in Vietnam to good effect as the Egyptians used the Soviet SAGGAR to good effect against Israeli tanks in 1973. Tanks supported by infantry are usually every effective. Sending a lone tank as a bot to shoot buildings is idiotic...

One advantage of not having an auto loader is you can store the ammunition at the back of the turret. If the ammo does cook off it can vent through the top of the turret instead of cooking the tank crew. Another advantage is you can select what kinds of rounds you want to use for each shot.

The T-72 was designed to be hard to hit but with modern tank targeting systems having a low tank is not the advantage it was in the past. Anyways plenty of debate goes on at the US War College over what kinetic weapons are still relevant. The spooks will say kinetic war itself is obsolete because they can change a regime with little or no kinetic action.

The T-72, many upgraded to the T-72B3 standard, are good tanks. Russia also still deploys numbers of T-80's that use a gas-turbine like the M-1 Abrams series and became a shitshow that was a lot more than a T-72 without much in technical improvements. The T-72 itself was fielded as a cheaper but still capable replacement for the still very good and interesting T-64 that was groundbreaking and supposedly better than anything NATO had on the late-60's. But it was massively expensive and the T-72 offered 90% of the capability at a fraction of the price. The Ukrainians still field a version called the BULAT that is probably better than anything Russia currently fields, but in smaller numbers...

The tank shown blowing up above is the T-90M, the pinnacle of Russian tank development and their basic answer to the current Western tanks like the M-1A2SEPv3/4 Abrams, Leopard II, Leclerc, Challenger II, etc. It's the best parts of a 72 and 80 and has a special package of not just "reactive armor" (explosive panels designed to throw off HEAT rounds) but an "active protection" system designed to fire essentially buckshot at incoming projectiles, or use various means to jam laser guided missiles like the Hellfire. Obviously, much hyped during the Syrian war, it doesn't seem to work very well. The Russians also installed steel rail screens on their tops of their tanks in ward off hits from the top hitting Javelins and NLAWs, to no avail. The Russians are being defeated because they are a corrupt ill trained army incapable of modern combined arms warfare and can only pound things with massive artillery barrages then advance very slowly. Some Russian units have been on the verge of open mutiny and many simply refuse to advance or fight. But they are now being pushed out of the north around Kharkov and I think it is a matter of time before they piss themselves out in Donbas and the South with mounting losses of armor and people they cannot sustain. The Ukrainians are now fielding the latest in NATO 155mm artillery systems that can outrange most Russian guns and the writing is on the wall. Putin even started preparing his nation for the inevitable 'victim-of-evil-NATO" defeat card...

The much vaunted T-90M tank obliterated by a shoulder fired recoilless rifle designed in 1948 (albeit much improved)...
