Foo Fighters Drummer Taylor Hawkins Dead at 50

Taylor Hawkins, the jovial, ferocious drummer for Foo Fighters, has died at the age of 50, according to a statement from the band.

“The Foo Fighters family is devastated by the tragic and untimely loss of our beloved Taylor Hawkins,” read the message, which was posted to social media. “His musical spirit and infectious laughter will live on with all of us forever.” Foo Fighters are currently on tour in South America and were preparing to perform at Festival Estéreo Picnic in Bogotá, Colombia, a rep for the band told Rolling Stone.

As news of Hawkins’ death spread, numerous musicians and celebrities took to social media to honor the late drummer. “God bless you Taylor Hawkins. I loved your spirit and your unstoppable rock power,” wrote Rage Against the Machine frontman Tom Morello, sharing a photo of himself and Hawkins alongside Jane’s Addiction’s Perry Farrell. “Rest In Peace my friend.”

“I’ve always had so much admiration for him,” former Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy said of Hawkins on Twitter. “Amazing drummer & a gem of a guy who was always fun to be around.” Producer Steve Albini, Nickleback and musician Finneas also shared tributes to Hawkins.

Born in Fort Worth, Texas, Hawkins relocated to Southern California with his family in his early childhood. He first rose to prominence as the touring drummer for Alanis Morissette during the Jagged Little Pill era. “The second I heard ‘You Oughta Know,’ I was like, ‘I’m in that band!'” Hawkins told Rolling Stone in November 2021. “I just knew.” Hawkins also appeared in the music videos for the singer’s hit singles “You Oughta Know” and “You Learn.”

After inter-studio conflict led to the departure of Foo Fighters’ original drummer William Goldsmith during recording sessions for the group’s breakthrough album The Colour and the Shape, forcing frontman Dave Grohl to handle drumming duties, Hawkins officially joined the band in the spring of 1997. Throughout his career with Foo Fighters, Hawkins occasionally handled vocal duties, singing lead on the group’s 2005 single “Cold Day in the Sun” and “Sunday Rain” from 2017’s Concrete and Gold. Hawkins also frequently sang cover songs with the group, both for Foo Fighters B-sides and during live performances — including a powerful rendition of Queen’s “Somebody to Love” during a January 2021 show for fully-vaccinated fans in Los Angeles.

Outside of his work with Foo Fighters, Hawkins regularly collaborated with other musicians and groups — and even launched several side projects of his own. In 2006, he embarked on a solo career with Taylor Hawkins and the Coattail Riders, reuniting with his former Morissette touring bandmate and Jane’s Addiction bassist, Chris Chaney. Hawkins would go on to release three albums under the Taylor Hawkins and the Coattail Riders banner, tapping artists including Queen’s Brian May and Roger Taylor, Elliot Easton of The Cars, Jane Addiction’s Perry Farrell, as well as Grohl for collaborations. Hawkins also fronted cover band Chevy Metal with friends Wiley Hodgden and Mick Murphy, which eventually recorded an album as Birds of Satan.

Hawkins is survived by his wife and three children.

    This story is developing.

I can't begin to tell you how refreshing this feels to hear of rock stars dying again. I had given up all hope. These motherfuckers just keep on older and older. The Foofy Fighters were generic trad rock with a mixture of generic pop and Grohl commercialized the living shit out of his dog and pony show. As for "Screaming" Dead Hawkins you can make for a solid argument he was the most talented of the band but also the biggest asshole. As Dirty Harry once said, "a man has to know his limitations" so when a Colombian coroner/toxicologist states this bird brain's heart was double in it weight due to having a minimum amount of ten different substances flowing in his Texan bloodstream he was either suicidal or just plain fucking stupid or both.

What gets me is either he just wanted out quick otherwise how would anyone close to him not have noticed this? Then there is Grohl himself. This dude is a magnet for drug-addicted suicidal fellow band members. Not the kind of dude you really want to hang around with. Was Hawkins trying to pull a Brian Connolly? At least Connolly knew how to moderate his death. I've seen Scots drink and they know when enough is enough but Hawky Boy is from Texas where the obesity rate is higher than the graduation rate so none of of this really surprises me when it comes to his intelligence. The dude always looked spaced-out and fucked up on something. Now we know why.

Not a particular fan of the Foo Fighters...or Dave Grohl.

Far be it from me to say others shouldn't like them, but their stature from my vantage point was way overblown in terms of their media presence vs. their talent.

They were generic rock. Problem with that band was lack of solid songwriting and direction which is why they did so many cover songs on stage (which is a tell-tale sign of a not having a decent songwriter). Grohl fell in love with his own media whoring more than he did his own band and never developed it into anything more. He got a lot of mileage out of the Kurt sympathy card and we'll see where he takes the Hawkins overdose.

First two Foo albums had some decent to good stuff on it.

I dunno...nothing the band has ever done has struck me as anything crucial, inspired or important in terms of rock music.

Grohl is certainly aware of how to overload the media machine and keep his image out there.

I'd sooner listen to Loverboy or Rick Springfield than the Foo Fighters.

I can't say it really matters to me one way or the other.

Mostly, I think, because of the sheer amount of platforms or ways/means of watching and listening to things...like, it's not 1991 when you basically had MTV and terrestrial radio, and something like...say...Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit could be overplayed on the limited amount of forums and sort of capture the zeitgeist to where it would be virtually impossible for one to NOT have seen it...

In other words, a particular band or actor or whatever is kind of more easily ignorable these days. I wasn't even aware the band had put out any new material after Sonic Highways, mostly because I wasn't even bothering to look for it.

Personally I don't think a drummer singing lead vocals in a rock band has or can be a good idea. Talking about the Foo Fighters specifically live Grohl is 90% of the focus and energy of the band, the other 6 or whatever it is these days are a bit shoe gazer to be honest.

I get people in this thread not being into them but probably because I didn't bother with them at all for the middle 15 years of their career I'm a recent convert and really admired the amazing stagecraft when I saw them live in 2019 for the second time after seeing their first tour whenever that was - the 1920s or something.

    Terry - Loverboy? Fuck off.

I believe the last drummer to actually perform as a lead vocalist was Pete Rivera from the early 70s band Rare Earth. The more familiar names like Ringo Starr, Don Henley or Phil Collins always ended up hiring some other guy to play the drums on tour.

Kelly Keagy of Night Ranger. Not full time though.

Didn’t Deen Castronovo handle some lead vocals in Journey?

Yeah, forgot about him... but he wasn't the full time singer. Though he did sing their biggest cheese ballad hit, of course.

Freese started out as the replacement drummer in The Vandals and has gone on to play with damned near everybody, so that's probably why Grohl identifies with the guy.

Our first stop is in Bogota
    To check Colombian fields
The natives smile and pass along
    A sample of their yield

The hippie couldn’t handle Bogotá’s best.

Happy, sad, angry, horny: The ultimate map guide to 90s rock music

    Awesome.

Happy, sad, angry, horny: The ultimate map guide to 90s rock music

    https://bigthink.com/strange-maps/90...and-landscape/

    Screenshot 2023-06-12 at 6.40.27 PM.jpg

"The Foo Fighters are at the dead center of the map, so all the other bands are happier, sadder, angrier, or hornier." It goes on, just like the Foo Fighters, ... "Firmly in the middle are the Foo Fighters, loud rock music’s answer to plain vanilla. While there’s nothing wrong with plain vanilla, the band’s position at the dead center of this map per definition means that all the other bands are happier, sadder, angrier, or hornier than Dave Grohl’s outfit."

I saw WASP recently and there is no way Lawless wasn't lip syncing. It just sounded too good to be true.

You couldn't pay me to go see or listen to, the boring ass Foo Fighters. Their music sucks ass and I'm sick of Grohl the self appointed know it all of rock music. The only difference between he and Eddie Trunk, is Grohl is actually a musician. Two self indulgent douchebags that make everything about themselves.

That "map" is all over the place. For one thing, I get why they consider Nirvana & Soundgarden to be "90s bands", since nobody outside of Cascadia heard of them before 1991. But Bad Religion, REM, and the Chili Peppers?? Those bands were all fairly well known by the mid 80s. And The Cure's first album came out in 1979, for fucks sake!

I don't remember the Gin Blossoms as being all that "horny". Drunk and miserable is more like it. The band's founder drank himself to death before their first album was even a hit. And Nine Inch Nails was at least as angry as they were horny. Yeah, they wanted to "fuck you like an animal" but only after they "smashed up everything"

That map was obviously written by someone much younger than most of us. He's probably not even 30.
