Can't say as for what cops make in terms of salary that I'd sign on for that gig when balancing the fact that you stand a daily risk of being assaulted/shot by someone in the general public.

Then again, it isn't compulsory to BE a policeman, either.

While I'm not 100% versed on all the facts re: the Texas schoolhouse mass shooting, the consensus emerging is that the police knew the shooter was still active and waited 45-odd minutes to confront/stop the shooter., and in that time period of them waiting the shooter killed some more people.

What the fuck is the point of militarizing these police forces if they're gonna choke when it comes to the moment of truth?

Maybe, sadly, we DO need to think about arming teachers and having armed security forces inside schools if the police aren't getting the job done.

I dunno. I don't have any answers to this situation of spree killing gun violence. I don't think disarming the citizenry is a viable (or desirable) option.

I suppose this shit is just going to keep happening. If as a species we've learned to accept the construction and proliferation of nuclear weapons to the point where we can blow ourselves up 100 times over, I guess we'll learn to accept these spree shootings, too: we pretty much already have...we uselessly tweet our thoughts and prayers, take to the internet and say 'something must be done' and then sit around twiddling our thumbs until the next incident happens...lather, rinse, repeat.

There was a teacher at my high school who occasionally threw a desk across a room when he got angry. No students were occupying the desks at the time, nor did he throw them AT the students, from what I remember. But probably still, a bit much as a display of anger by a professional - underpaid or not.

I'd really hate to think of old man McDonald waving a gun around on one of his bad days.

I don't know anyone who went to a school with no crazy teachers, there were at least 5 or 10 at mine.

Our homeroom/PE/Health teacher was also the basketball coach and was known for throwing chairs and tantrums.

One of my teachers hit me in the back with an old dictionary once.

Friend I've known since third grade just retired from teaching and school administrating. He remembers our fourth grade teacher throwing an eraser at me when I cracked a joke. He says I wish I could do that, and says kids could motherfuck him all day and all he could do is pat them on the head and say "yes, thank you. That's nice." Calling the parents didn't get any results. This was in an affluent suburb of Cleveland.

The reality, as I see it, is that Pandora's Box was flung open decades ago, and as a nation we won't shut it.

So, we're all just going to have to continue to live with the consequences, seeing as we are opting not to do anything about it.

My hesitancy about limiting or severely restricting private gun ownership results from the militarization of police forces from coast-to-coast: if the police forces demilitarize, I'm all for gun restrictions on private citizens. Ultimately, neither police departments nor private citizens NEED automatic/military-grade weapons.

I'm assuming the definition of mass shooting is three or more people shot by a single person in a short span of time...

But, yeah, it's fucking nuts. I mean, prior to reading your post, I hadn't looked for or heard exactly how many mass shootings had taken place thus far this year, but I recently was thinking that it seemed like one was happening every day and then dismissed that passing thought and thought that there couldn't be THAT many happening with THAT level of frequency...

And I guess I was correct in the sense that it is now MORE than one per day, trending upward toward being two per day.
