I know that Wolf is talking about his father here, so his viewpoint is little different and he's trying to be diplomatic or whatever but "same guy wrote both eras" doesn't mean that "that same guy" cannot write crap. Or that it sounds like two totally different bands.
Wolf looks like a fat Dave Grohl. Yeah the guy has some talent but if you are really serious about being an entertainer you put some effort into looking good.
That's a problem that Wolf has. The Hagar era just wasn't as good and he can't accept that.
The songs weren't written by one person alone either. The singer has a big role to play as we all know.
Change the singer you change the whole dynamic. Hagar was obviously somewhat of a hack.
He recently talked about the "magic ' the band had and points to Cabo Wabo as being an example.: " it was done in one take"etc.
But that is what the vocal sounds like and the lyrics are pure shit.
He's trying to copy Dave's style and it doesn't work.

Which is what it is. So that place is pretty much a Hagar love in at this point.
Bottom line: Dave had artistic ambitions and took more time with each track.
Hagar didn't, was lazy, and cared about money more than anything else which is what the Van Halen bros figured out.
You can be the"better singer" but the creativity section of the exam goes to Dave all the way.
the song Cabo Wabo is a good example of why Van Hagar was shit compared to CVH.
I had recently listened back to that track on Apple Music when the remastered versions came out, curious to hear if there was any improvement on sound, etc.
As far as the song goes it plods along and for way too long. The backing vox with too many "ooos" again is cringe. Ed's main riff was good as was Alex's groove but as it keeps going it comes across as lazy, boring and slow. Ed's solo was just lame wanking like he had nothing left in the tank to offer. Sam's lame lyrical content and delivery just caps it off as making it worse. In a nutshell thats what Van Hagar was.

That always kinda irked me about him from the get-go as far back as the first tour he did with Van Halen, in that circa 2007 the band for all the world looked like 3 rock stars and a schlubby, portly kid who took the stage wearing a fuckin' hoodie, which only made the nepo-freak show aspect of the reunion even more vivid: not only was the kid nothing exceptional in the musical ability department but he couldn't even be bothered to get into decent physical condition or dress like a rock star. If you're a David Lee Roth or an Eddie Van Halen, a certain amount of leeway re: wardrobe is allowed. If you're Wolfgang Van Halen, showing up overweight wearing a hoodie just makes you a slob.
Wouldn't say the kid is totally talentless, but these days he just looks terrible. Even more bloated than he did 15 years ago.
I suppose I can understand Wolfgang being defensive over those who think less of what his father did after Roth left the group. But that's the thing about professional musicians, in that once the music is put out there the audience makes up their own mind. The contentions over which Van Halen lineup was better have been going on since before Wolfgang was born, and him chiming in his two cents isn't going to make any difference.

You'd get several tracks on each Van Hagar album that were exactly that, where Ed had a good main riff and there was a good instrumental groove yet the end result sounded like something that wasn't rehearsed enough before being put down on tape. Instrumental ideas that weren't worked on as much as they could have been during the writing stages of the albums. It felt a lot of times after Dave left with the Van Hagar albums like whatever producer was working with the band wasn't pushing the group to be the best they could be and the band was too busy high-fiving one another and having a bromance lovefest and being merely content rather than aggressive. LOT of Ed's solos post-Roth were lame wanking, sort of second rate retreads that went in one ear and out the other for me as a listener.

This may be one of the smartest things Hagar has said. Hagar should be thanking Ed. I've also been thinking that EVH is responsible for everything Hagar has accomplished since 1985. I Can't Drive 55 (and Sam's solo career in general) was not going to get Hagar enough money or exposure to buy Cabo Wabo or start any of the other businesses he has.
We hold EVH in high regard here but let's be honest, he was responsible for foisting Hagar on us. On the other hand, if Hagar wasn't as big as he thinks he is, we wouldn't have much to bitch about
