Eddie had said prior to Hagar he had talked with Smyth and had broached the idea of her singing with the band which she declined to do.

There was also an idea prior to Hagar being approached of having an album with a bunch of guest singers...like a different singer for each tune.

Apparently this was an old article from Classic Rock magazine, July 2011 Issue 159. That is why it seemed like the same old bs because that what it was.

    Right - I thought so.

This bozo Niall Docherty needs some cash and regurgitates an old story, doesn't cite a source and picks up the hits he needs.

Yeah, but regardless Hagar has been making inflated claims re: record sales and concert attendances going back to the 1990s before he left Van Halen in 1996.

Hagar said more than once in the 1990s that the band sold 60 million records while he was in it, with the inference being that the version of Van Halen he was in sold 60 million records.

Sort of along the lines of when Hagar was boasting around the time of the Balance album how Van Halen was performing to sold out audiences all over Europe in 1995: he made that claim several times, always neglecting to mention that Van Halen were opening for Bon Jovi on all those dates.

It was when the internet became widely available in the mid-1990s - and the data about these things (concert attendances/albums sales) became more easily accessible - that others started debunking Hagar's claims online.

Be ready for more Hagar nonsense. The Van Hagar studio albums have been remastered and the box set is coming out soon. I'm sure Hagarelli will be making the rounds and yappin'.

Hmmm. No any new stuff in that box set. That "rarities" disc is a joke. Up For Breakfast remastered, yay... Didn't Sam said that there was supposed to be some unreleased stuff? Between the Two Us or something like that.

Interesting how everything that was on van-halen.com has now been removed to make way for the announcement of the Van Hagar remasters.

This includes the recent personal messages from Alex on milestones regarding Ed be it the anniversary of his death or his birthday.

This will no doubt make Sam think Al is ready to reconcile. Lol

Are those just the 2015 remasters just repackaged in a box with replica backstage passes from each tour?

    BANDCAMP GOD DAMN IT!

Buy all of your musical shit on Bandcamp. Why? Because there is no middleman like a fucktard Bezos to steal the money that would otherwise being going directly to the artist themselves.

Here's a unboxing video of that box set. No "rarities" disc in this one. The CD and digiversion has the two Best Of songs and Live in Tokyo included if I remember correctly.

Live In Tokyo is 4 LPs so that would make it too expensive to include but would be fun if they had included 7" of Me Wise Magic / Can't Get This Stuff No More.

Maybe in 'The Collection III' with ADKOT.

Bandcamp doesn't have any Van Halen. Not even Van Hagar. Just a few tribute albums, and some of those odd techno dance remixes.

They do have the entire discography of some other great bands though. Like The 77s.

Yeah, apparently they got lazy and wanted the same exact track listings on the vinyl & CD formats. So they took "Apolitical Blues" off of Othisblowsgoats2 and "Balicwhathefuckeverism" off of Balance and threw them on the "rarities" disc. Along with "Crossing Over" which was on the Japanese Balance but only released in the US as a B side to "I Can't Stop Huffing Glue" - a single which I have never seen, and wouldn't want to.

The remainder of tracks are the two songs from the Twister soundtrack, and those three abortions from 2004. These may well be out of print in their original form, but hardly "rarities".

I would think they would at least throw in the keyboard mix of "FInish What You Started". I remember hearing it on the radio back in 88. Don't know if it ever got an official release of any kind, but that would at least be somewhat of a "rarity".

If they truly remastered the first two albums and added some bass to them, this box might have some potential . Probably not for me, but the Van Hagar fans. Of course if the rumors are true that Alex ain't on speaking terms with Mike Sobolewski, this isn't likely to happen. Unless they overdubbed it with Wolfie playing bass... and I don't think even the sheepiest of all sheep would be happy about that.

Sammy will be happy because it gives him some slight relevance in music media again for a few weeks. But I don't see anybody else being all that overjoyed by this release.

Did Pro Tools exist in 1988? This is the same version I heard on the radio way back then.

I think Pro Tools started in 1989 as Digidesign Sound Tools and was stereo only.
The best thing about this keyboard version Sammy the alien's vocals are mixed lower.

Just listened to the newly remastered Humans Being on Apple Music.

Been a long time since I actually heard it.

Ed's riff was pretty good but as soon as Hagar starts with his lame lyrics and then the gay 'Shine on....shine on... that was it.

I remembered why Van Hagar sucked so much.

Agreed on a lot of levels...but I have no shame in admitting that THAT is one of the tracks they did that I think they did a pretty good job. It's one of the few "good" Van Hagar tracks, in my opinion.

New remastered music video. Looks like they digitally removed all they noise from the video so all their faces seem bit waxy. And what the hell is Hag wearing? That outfit makes Michael Bolton look like a badass.

Wikipedia: The song's lyrics proved a major source of contention.[2] Alex called the film's director, Jan De Bont, to ask him how closely he wanted the lyrics to be related to the movie's context, to which De Bont replied "Oh, please don't write about tornadoes. I don't want this to be a narrative for the movie."[3] Hagar obliged, and then asked De Bont for some footage of Twister. Considering that film dealt with "the infatuation people have with fear and how it can suck you in", he decided to write lyrics about how "sometimes you're afraid to fall in love with a chick, but she sucks you in anyway." De Bont and Budd Carr also sent Hagar a folder with terms used by storm chasers as the singer felt he could add lyrics with terms such as "suck zone". The brothers still disliked Hagar's first lyrics ("Sky turning black/knuckles turning white/headed for the suck zone"), and he had to come up with new ones.[2]

Suck Zone! Wtf. Could have been worse I guess.

And it's the version with the solo hacked up.

That's what they should have named the box set! Suck Zone!

Ironically WB releases the song that broke up Van Hagar in the first place as the first teaser to the new remasters.

Can't quite remember if it was after Dave and before Hagar or after Hagar left - possibly the former - but both Joey Ramone (or his manager) and Wendy O Williams claimed that EVH approached them and broached the idea of becoming the lead singer.

And, I read somewhere recently that Daryl Hall said the same - EVH said something like 'you could become our singer' (and who knows how serious he was when he was saying these things).

I generally like to remain incognito about these things, but I wrote that article - it has been regurgitated in many places online in full. So it has been floating around out there for ten years. I have no beef with people using factoids that my research first uncovered without attribution, because I was paid quite well by Classic Rock, so I got my piece. And it was all documentary research anyway (which is not to say I didn't have to work at it). None of the band would speak to me.

MA was supposed to, but changed his mind on the day of the interview because he was going into the studio with Chickenfoot. Probably found out the band were not co-operating with it (and they refused to co-operate with a later piece Classic Rock wanted me to do).

I had heard several names being rumored between Hagar leaving the band in June of 1996 and the band formerly settling on Cherone in September of 1996...Billy Squier and David Coverdale being the two names that stood out the most in terms of name recognition. I've never heard either of those names publicly being confirmed by any of the band members or management as being under consideration. Thus, both those names/singers could have been literally rumors made up or spun up out of nothing, or both those names could have been ones Ed mentioned in passing to someone as singers he liked.

Some of this stuff does kind of remind me of when Sean Connery was replaced as James Bond. Literally dozens of actors were considered, many screen tested, some probably just bullshitted by potential agents, so that you get to the point where it's a bit unusual for any handsome British actor born between 1935 and 1955 not to have it said that they were 'considered/nearly became James Bond' on their profile or at this point obituary.
