Penix Jr. Leads Huskies To Win Over No. 11 Michigan State

SEATTLE (AP) – Michael Penix Jr. threw for 397 yards and four touchdowns to lead Washington to an upset win over No. 11 Michigan State on Saturday night at Alaska Airlines Field at Husky Stadium.

Penix was spectacular for three quarters in a primetime national showcase that showed Kalen DeBoer's rebuild of the Huskies (3-0) is progressing faster than expected. Washington led 29-8 at halftime and went on to a 39-28 victory. Penix completed 24 of 40 passes and just missed posting the eighth 400-yard passing game in Washington history. He was at his best in the first half, making 18 of 24 attempts for 278 yards and leading Washington to touchdowns on four of its five possessions.

Ja'Lynn Polk had six catches for a career-high 153 yards and three TDs.

Payton Thorne threw for 323 yards and three TDs, and led a pair of quick fourth-quarter scoring drives for Michigan State (2-1) that caused some nerves for the Huskies. But the rally was too late for the Spartans, who were stymied in the run game and saw their pass defense get exposed.

It was Washington's first win over a ranked Power Five nonconference opponent at home since beating Michigan to open the 2001 season.

    DAWGS are 4-0!!

No. 18 Washington Dominates In 40-22 Win Over Stanford
    University of Washington Athletics

SEATTLE (AP) — Wayne Taulapapa rushed for a career-high 120 yards and one touchdown, Washington's defense sacked Stanford quarterback Tanner McKee eight times and forced two fumbles, and the 18th-ranked Huskies beat the Cardinal 40-22 on Saturday night at Alaska Airlines Field at Husky Stadium.

Playing as a ranked team for the first time this season, Washington (4-0, 1-0) used a stingy defense and a handful of big plays on offense to win its Pac-12 opener under new coach Kalen DeBoer.

Huskies quarterback Michael Penix Jr. threw for 309 yards and second-half touchdowns of 30 yards to Rome Odunze and 21 yards to Giles Jackson on a screen pass. Odunze had eight catches for 161 yards, his first career game over 100 yards receiving.

But Washington's defense deserved equal recognition for the constant pressure it was able to put on McKee. The Huskies sacked him six times in the first half.

Stanford lost its eighth straight conference game dating to last season, the longest skid under coach David Shaw.

The Huskies have scored at least 39 points in all four games, and this time they did it without an otherworldly performance by Penix, who still managed to top 300 yards passing for the fourth straight game. Penix was 22 of 37. Will Nixon added a 3-yard touchdown run and Peyton Henry kicked four field goals.

Taulapapa was a less-heralded offseason transfer for Washington but earned the starting nod at running back for a reason. He showed flashes in the first three games but found massive gaps to run through against the Cardinal, averaging 9.2 yards per carry.

Taulapapa's longest run came midway through the second quarter when he scampered down the sideline for a 34-yard touchdown two plays after a Stanford turnover. It was the first 100-yard game of Taulapapa's career, both at Virginia and Washington.

McKee was 17 of 26 for 286 yards and three touchdowns. He hit Michael Wilson for 23 yards in the second quarter, John Humphreys on a 17-yard TD and found Wilson again on a 78-yard TD late in the fourth.

But it was Washington's pass rush that set the tone early. The Huskies entered the night with seven sacks on the season and had six in the first half on McKee. Bralen Trice and Alphonzo Tuputala got to McKee twice in the opening half. But the biggest sack came from Jeremiah Martin when he was able to slap the ball from McKee midway through the second quarter.

Faatui Tuitele recovered the fumble and two plays later, Tualapapa broke free for his touchdown run and a 17-0 lead.

The Cardinal were without leading rusher E.J. Smith and starting right tackle Myles Hinton due to injuries. Casey Filkins rushed for 100 yards in place of Smith.

The Huskies go on the road for the first time this season and on a short week traveling to UCLA next Friday.

And the 9-2 DAWGS keep rolling. Don't need the big Purple letters for this one, because everybody knew they would win this one in their sleep.

Was hoping for a shut out, but nothing's perfect. They needed a blowout like this to be ready for the Pullman Pussies in next week's Apple Cup

DAWGS Win the Apple Cup and finish strong with a 10-2 Season

No. 12 UW Outlasts WSU, 55-31, In Apple Cup
    University of Washington Athletics

PULLMAN, Wash. (AP) — Michael Penix Jr. threw for 484 yards and had five total touchdowns and No. 12 Washington reclaimed the Apple Cup with a wild 51-33 victory over Washington State on Saturday night.

A year after the Huskies watched the Cougars celebrate snapping a seven-game losing streak on the turf of Husky Stadium, Washington kept alive its hopes for a New Year's Six bowl game thanks to its standout quarterback and a handful of defensive stops in the second half.

The 84 combined points were the most in the 114 matchups between the rivals.

Washington (10-2, 7-2 Pac-12, No. 13 CFP) outscored the Cougars (7-5, 4-5) 23-6 in the second half after a dizzying first half that featured 55 combined points, 630 combined yards of offense and a 28-27 lead for the Huskies at the break.

Rome Odunze had a 5-yard touchdown run in the opening moments of the fourth quarter. Peyton Henry kicked a 20-yard field goal with 5:02 left, and Wayne Taulapapa provided the capper with a 40-yard TD run with 1:28 left.

The Huskies finished with 702 yards of offense against a Washington State defense that led the Pac-12 in scoring defense at under 20 points per game. If not for two second-half turnovers by the Huskies, the margin of victory could have been much larger.

Washington's victory also sent Utah to the Pac-12 championship game as the opponent for Southern California next week in Las Vegas.

Cameron Ward threw for 322 yards and two touchdowns for Washington State, but the Cougars failed to score on five of their six offensive possessions in the second half. Odunze had five catches 157 yards and a touchdown to go along with his TD run and Jalen McMillan caught six passes for 150 yards, including a 75-yard touchdown reception on the first play of the second half that gave the Huskies a 35-27 lead.

Washington has won eight of nine in the series and the past four games played in Pullman. Washington State was seeking consecutive Apple Cup victories for the first time since 2007-08.

Penix was 25 of 43 passing and nearly topped 500 yards for the second time this season. He threw for 242 yards as part of a first half that featured 55 combined points, seven lead changes, 630 total yards.

Penix threw for two touchdowns and ran for two more in the first half, one a 30-yard run on what turned out to be a double lateral.

Penix connected with Ja'Lynn Polk on a 26-yard TD and a 47-yard TD to Odunze on a double move.

Washington State also had some tricks. Punter Nick Haberer hit linebacker Daiyon Henley on a 36-yard pass that set up Washington State's first TD. It was one of four fourth-down conversions for the Cougars and Ward capped that drive with a 14-yard touchdown run.

Ward added touchdown passes of 34 yards to Robert Ferrel on fourth-and-10, and a 15-yard TD pass to Nakia Watson. Dean Janikowski's second field goal on the final play of the half pulled the Cougars within 28-27 at the break.

It's absolute BULLSHIT that the DAWGS aren't in the PAC 12 title game. They are much better than Utah, and since when is Utah in the "north" of anything?? As for USC, yeah they have a better record, but they already bailed on the PAC 12, so they should be barred from playing in the title game at all. Also.. neither USC or Utah played the DAWGS this year, so they should have to prove themselves. If it were up to me, I'd have the Huskies do some Mormon stomping for the PAC 12 title game, and leave USC out of it altogether.
