This show was much better than the infamous opening night which spurred a slew of online reactions. I just wish he didn't pipe in the obvious backing vocals. I remember reading somewhere that he planned to have actual backup singers on this show - from the Temptations or Earth, Wind, Fire tribute band or something - but they were fired just before the residency.

Watched some of that video... decent performance but it just didn't move the needle for me... visually, sonically or musically...

I think a lot of that was pretty unfair. It was based on the worst 3 songs in the set recorded on a phone close to the monitors. Not saying it was amazing but in the room at gig volume it probably sounded ok and good enough on the other songs.

That said there seemed to be a surprising naivety by DLR that he could still do 'warm up' gigs to get into the zone in the age of phone cameras and YouTube...

I think losing Ray Luzier was the biggest setback in the post Vai Roth career.

Apart from being an amazing drummer he also ended up being 'band leader' and kept standards up way beyond ok or adequate.

I think I'm right there with Zah and Sesh...the Roth backing band circa 2020 was competent but little to nothing beyond that. Nondescript backing musicians offering nothing to get excited over.

Sesh raised a good point... Luzier is a phenomenal drummer and great guy!

Many forget that the CVH magic wasn't just Eddie and Dave... Alex brought a ton to that equation. The 2020 cover band™ drummer just doesn't fill the spot well.

As backing bands go... don't forget Lomenzo's camo pants on bass was a key element in the early 2000's backing group.

Well, that was the thing, in that Lomenzo, Young, Luzier...you had distinctive personalities onstage backing Roth. Same went with the EEAS lineup.

Those 2020 musicians...again, competent but nothing special. Working musicians.

Van Halen impossible to replace. Eat ‘Em and Smile band another impossibility of a different flavor. It’s one thing to find musicians who can play it’s another to find people who are exciting on stage. You need both. Not easy to find.

That bass player looked like he crawled out of the jungles of Borneo. Roth must have found him while on a Jungle Studs vacation.

Nope, they don't grow on trees, that's for sure.
