Why Rockers Couldn't Stand Eddie Van Halen?

The clip sounds like one of those deals where the narrative is something an AI audiobot cobbled together, read by a computer-generated voice. Not to say it being read by an actual human would have made any difference, content-wise.
It's kinda along the lines when I open up my MSN homepage and it looks like an online version of a supermarket tabloid rag, complete with 'current' exposes of reports re: Frank Sinatra secretly didn't like Elvis Presley!Scramby eggs and bacon.Comment

Like I said, just...fucking sad to see what Eddie had done to himself. To the point where it had affected his ability to play up to level one had taken for granted, a situation that really didn't get rectified 100% until the ADKOT tour. Whatever one wants to say about the VHIII album, Eddie was still delivering the goods live. To see Eddie at that 2006 NAMM show unable to play well...I gotta tell you, frankly when in early 2007 word was released that Dave had rejoined the fold, my biggest concern wasn't Michael Anthony not being there. Which isn't to say that wasn't a concern, but I honestly didn't think either Eddie OR Dave were up to performing Van Halen material at a level where the reunion wouldn't be an embarrassment (having seen Roth several times between 1999 and 2006, while enjoyed those shows the level of performance wasn't what I'd consider acceptable in terms of charging premium arena ticket prices). But, Dave upped his game in 2007. Ed started that tour off strong, too, but wasn't playing as well as he would go on to in 2012 and 2015.Scramby eggs and bacon.Comment

One looks at Hagar constantly talking about Eddie, [Hagar's] non-contact with Alex, Wolfgang and all that biz in the wake of Eddie's passing vs. Dave who has been by comparison relatively mute about all of it.

It's a difficult balance for me in highly respecting the musical accomplishments of Edward and observing the destructive path of his substance abuse to himself and relationships with other musicians and the fans over the years. Glad he made a turnaround near the end of his career/life... saddened/disgusted by the collateral damage he left in his wake..."If you want to be a monk... you gotta cook a lot of rice...”Comment

If Edward valued that relationship with Michael in any way... he had plenty of somewhat healthy years... 16 years to do so. Edward chose not to do anything... It's not like Ed was all that busy for a decade and a half. That's on his score card.Last edited by ZahZoo; 02-23-2023, 09:35 AM."If you want to be a monk... you gotta cook a lot of rice...”Comment

I can't see any reason to pin anything on Michael for the failure of his relationship with Edward and the Van Halen band in general. Mike carried the Van Halen flag and was the only member of the band to do so with the fanbase during Edward's darkest years in the early 2000's. Then he was kicked to side due to nothing he did only learning of the end of his 40+ year career with Van Halen ending via the internet...

I mean its much like Mike not contacting the brothers and expressing condolences on the passing of their mother.
Cause as a comparison, even Dave called Ed to express his condolences on the passing of Jan in 1986 - and this was at the height of the Dave-VH feud.
Perhaps Mike doesn't give a flying fuck and his 'good guy' image is just fake. Or that he had enough of the brothers and really didn't give a hoot when Ed passed.
I'm just speculating.=V V=

I'm surprised Mike didn't reach out when the Ed and Al's Mom passed. Was that at the time they were in the process of cutting Mike out of everything? I'm not sure if it is true that he didn't reach out, but I do seem to recall it being public knowledge he didn't.Comment

I don't think anyone other than Mike, Ed or Alex knew if Mike reached out when Mrs Van Halen passed. That's something that's really only been speculated on a few of the fan sites and never mentioned by anyone in the band. Odds favor he did and Ed was too high to remember... plus that's a pretty thin issue for someone with a 30-40 years of a loyal business relationship to just dump em that way it went down."If you want to be a monk... you gotta cook a lot of rice...”Comment

Neither of these statements is true. I have a friend that is related to Mike through marriage. In fact, he got Mike to sign one of my personal pictures I took of Mike in 1980, for me. Mike is genuinely a good guy. Many many people other than Clichegar will confirm that. I have another friend that actually worked for the band until Dave left. He says Mike was the most genuine of any of them.

Mike was loyal to the band. To his own detriment. Me, I'd like to think I would have walked in 1984 when the Van Halens and Roth kneecapped my cut of the profits. Mike remained loyal. Mike was for all intents and purposes out of the band by the time the Sam and Dave tour rolled around. Come 2004, the Van Halens didn't even want Anthony on the tour and had [Anthony] sign away more rights to the Van Halen brand name to participate. Mike went ahead and did the tour.
By the time Ed's mother died, doesn't sound to me like there was much of anything the Van Halens and Mike had left to say to one another. By the time Ed died, 15 MORE years had passed. The communication during that time apparently consisted of Mike speaking to Alex on the phone once for 20 minutes.
Doesn't even sound like there WAS a relationship of any sort when Ed's mom died nor when Ed died. Why WOULD Mike make condolence calls in that case? Like ZahZoo said, Ed could have reached out to Mike at any time.
Me personally, by the time the 2004 tour was done, I'd be done reaching out to the Van Halens had I the type of relationship Anthony had with them.
Have had several relationships over the last decade or so, with both friends and family, where I was always the one initiating the contacts (phone calls, emails, etc.). Sort of woke up a few years ago and asked myself were any of these relationships worth it if I'm the only one making the effort? Turns out not in those instances: once I stopped making the effort via contacting and got zero response in return, I let those relationships go.
Mike couldn't have meant much to Ed if Ed couldn't be bothered to pick up a phone and say so. And that whole "Mike didn't call me when my mommy died" smacks of a bullshit rationale excuse for Ed to do what he had apparently wanted to for years, which is chuck Mike out of the group. So, fine, chuck him out of the group. Don't call him for 15 years. Don't do those things and expect the guy to reach out to you when you're ill. That's just bullshit, pure and simple.Scramby eggs and bacon.Comment

Well yeah, maybe 'The Other 8th' would have been reasonable...Comment
