DOJ Finally Abandons Trump in E. Jean Carroll Rape Defamation Case

When the Department of Justice announced in 2021 that it would continue to represent Donald Trump
in his defamation case against journalist E. Jean Carroll, it set up years of discomfort for the federal
government in defending a former president accused of rape.

On Tuesday, the Justice Department said it would no longer shield Trump from the costly and
contentious legal battle.

DOJ lawyers notified a federal judge in New York City that they would not assert that “Donald J. Trump
was acting within the scope of his office and employment as President of the United States” when, in 2019,
he denied ever raping Carroll—and added a pigheaded rebuttal that she wasn’t even his type.

Trump Says He’s a Target in Special Counsel’s Capitol Attack Investigation

It would be the second time the special counsel has notified the former president that he is likely to face indictment, this time in connection with the criminal investigation into the events leading up to the storming of the Capitol.

The last time Trump disclosed he’d received a target letter, he was indicted within days.

Former President Donald J. Trump said on Tuesday that he had received a so-called target letter in connection with the criminal investigation into his efforts to hold onto power after he lost the 2020 election, a sign that he is likely to be indicted in the case.

It was not clear what aspects of the sprawling investigation the letter may be related to. The investigation has examined an array of schemes that Mr. Trump and his allies had used to try to stave off defeat, including the events surrounding the Jan. 6, 2021, riot by his supporters at the Capitol.

The letter was the second Mr. Trump received from the special counsel, Jack Smith, notifying Mr. Trump that he is a target in a federal investigation. The first, in June, was in connection to the inquiry into Mr. Trump’s handling of national defense material after he left office and his alleged obstruction of efforts to retrieve it.

Days after that letter became public, Mr. Trump was charged with 37 criminal counts covering seven different violations of federal law.

Mr. Trump disclosed his receipt of the latest target letter in a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, that assailed Mr. Smith, calling him “deranged.� He wrote that he had received the letter on Sunday and been given four days to report to a grand jury — an invitation he is expected to decline.

The former president spent weeks after the 2020 election publicly insisting that he had won and looking for ways to remain in power, at one point considering whether to use the apparatus of government to seize voting machines. Ultimately, he encouraged a crowd at a rally near the White House to march to the Capitol as Joseph R. Biden’s electoral victory was being certified. Members of the mob stormed the building, some chanting “Hang Mike Pence!� and others hunting for Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

Here’s what to know:

Mr. Trump disclosed the existence of the letter on Tuesday morning after a news inquiry into whether he had been told he was a target of the investigation. “Deranged Jack Smith, the prosecutor with Joe Biden’s DOJ, sent a letter (again, it was Sunday night!) stating that I am a TARGET of the January 6th Grand Jury investigation, and giving me a very short 4 days to report to the Grand Jury, which almost always means an Arrest and Indictment,� he wrote on Truth Social.

A target letter is an official piece of correspondence from the Justice Department informing a person that they are actively being investigated. Here’s what that means.

Mr. Smith, who was appointed in November to investigate Mr. Trump, is a hard-driving, flinty former prosecutor chosen for his experience in bringing high-stakes cases against politicians in the United States and abroad. Read about him here.

At least two grand juries have been hearing matters related to Mr. Trump’s efforts to stay in power. His son-in-law, Jared Kushner, appeared before one of the grand juries in June, according to people familiar with his appearance. Rudolph W. Giuliani, who was Mr. Trump’s personal lawyer, had a recent interview with prosecutors.

Prosecutors have been asking witnesses about the former president’s state of mind, as well as efforts to fund-raise off his false claims of widespread voter fraud and whether he knew he had lost. They have also been scrutinizing efforts to put together slates of so-called fake electors to cast ballots in support of Mr. Trump when the electoral college tallies were certified.

Former President Donald Trump has been indicted on charges related to special counsel Jack Smith's probe into efforts to overturn the 2020 election, sources with direct knowledge tell ABC News.

It marks the third time the former president has been indicted on criminal charges, following his indictment last month in the special counsel's probe into his handling of classified materials after leaving office, and his indictment in April on New York state charges of falsifying business records in connection with a hush money payment made to adult film actress Stormy Daniels.

Trump, who has decried the probes as political witch hunts, pleaded not guilty to all charges in both those cases.

In the history of the country, no president or former president had ever been indicted prior to Trump's first indictment in April.

Trump was informed by Smith on July 16 that he was a target in the election probe, in a letter that sources said mentioned three federal statutes: conspiracy to commit offense or to defraud the United States, deprivation of rights under a civil rights statute, and tampering with a witness, victim or an informant.

A grand jury empaneled by Smith in Washington, D.C., has been speaking with witnesses ranging from former White House aides to state election officials. Among those testifying in recent weeks have been former top Trump aide Hope Hicks and Trump's son-in-law and former White House senior adviser Jared Kushner.

Investigators have also been speaking with election officials who are believed to have been part of the failed 2020 effort to put forward slates of so-called "fake electors" to cast electoral college votes for Trump on Jan. 6.

Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed Smith to oversee both the election probe and the classified documents probe, after Trump's announcement in November that he was again running for president triggered the appointment of an independent special counsel to avoid a potential conflict of interest in the Justice Department.

I recall the first two years or so of Trump's term I was keeping up pretty much daily with what Trump was saying and doing. It kinda waned until he left office, spiking here and there, but I plain burned out on The Daily Trump Watch even before covid first struck.

Since Trump left office, it's pretty much zero fucks given to whatever his tweet/predicament of the day is. Point of fact, outside of whatever is posted here on this site in this forum...I just can't be bothered. Whatever ability he had to shock me and/or retain my attention has eroded. I can't say that interest will be rekindled next year should Trump get the nomination. Why should it? I already know who I'm not voting for.

I guess Trump can still fill a rally and has retained the support of many of his diehard supporters.
