Dawgs & Ducks move to the Big 10? PAC 12 is officially dead??

Sources: Oregon, Washington to Join Big Ten, Leave Pac-12
    Brett McMurphy
    Aug 04, 2023, 12:41 PM EDT

The Big Ten is getting even bigger with Oregon and Washington becoming the latest schools to join the conference from the Pac-12 starting in 2024, sources told Action Network.

The departure of the Ducks and Huskies increases the number of schools leaving the Pac-12 in the past 13 months to five (UO, UW, Colorado, USC and UCLA) and could be the fatal blow to the Pac-12.

The Big Ten will grow to 18 members, the largest in college football history, and must decide whether to expand even further. The Big Ten is contemplating whether to stand at 18 or consider adding Stanford and Cal, or possibly any ACC schools that may leave, sources said.

Oregon and Washington will not immediately receive full shares in the Big Ten’s new media rights deal with FOX, CBS and NBC but will still make more than they would have by remaining in the Pac-12, sources said.

With additional schools leaving the Pac-12, the Mountain West would “be open” to adding remaining Pac-12 schools to the league, sources told Action Network.

The Mountain West currently has a linear television deal with FOX and CBS Sports Network with additional games on CBS through the 2025 season. Another possibility for the Mountain West, depending on how many schools are remaining in the Pac-12, could be a merger of some type between the two leagues, a source said.

Last August, Action Network reported Oregon and Washington met with Big Ten officials about potential membership. Oregon met with Big Ten officials in Chicago, while Washington met with Big Ten officials in New York, sources said.

Both schools had been “vetted and cleared” to join the Big Ten for more than a year if the financial details could be worked out between the schools, the Big Ten and the Big Ten’s television partners.

“There was no more research or information needed on Oregon and Washington,” Big Ten sources said Thursday. “We have everything we need.”

When former commissioner Kevin Warren left to become president and CEO of the Chicago Bears, the Big Ten momentarily paused the pursuit of any additional members. Even last month, new commissioner Tony Petitti said his direction from the Big Ten presidents was not to expand but to focus on the addition of USC and UCLA in 2024.

That quickly changed when Colorado left for the Big 12.

Even though the Big Ten started the Pac-12’s downfall by grabbing USC and UCLA last year, the league did not want “the Pac-12’s blood on its hands” by taking Oregon and Washington before any other members left, sources said.

However, with the departures of Arizona, Arizona State and Colorado, the Big Ten saw the opportunity to add the Ducks and Huskies without paying them full media shares since the Pac-12 is in “disarray,” sources said.

The Big Ten now must decide whether to stay at 18 schools or expand further. The league’s options are adding Stanford and Cal or waiting to see if any schools become available from the ACC, such as Florida State, Clemson, Miami or North Carolina.

Notre Dame is the Big Ten’s top expansion candidate, but the Irish have given no indication they want to give up their independent status.

Last week, Florida State’s president Richard McCullough and the school’s trustees were clear their days in the ACC were limited.

“We are not satisfied with our current situation,” McCullough said in the Board of Trustees meeting. “We love the ACC. Our goal is to stay in the ACC, but to stay in the ACC under the current (media rights) situation is hard for us to figure out how we remain competitive unless there is a major change in revenue distribution within the ACC.”

Added FSU trustee Drew Weatherford: “It's not a matter of if we leave (the ACC), but how and when we leave."

Now I will be the first to say that it's absolute BULLSHIT how the DAWGS have been cheated out of the Pac12 title in two out of the last three years, only to see it go to a team with a lesser record like Utah... but I don't think this is the best solution to that problem.

And who the fuck is going to play in the Rose Bowl if all the good Pac12 teams are now in the Big 10. Or Big 18. Or Big 8675309... what ever number it ends up being in the end.

I haven't looked at the schedules but I wonder if this is the end of tOSU scheduling early games vs smaller Ohio schools.

The Dawgs have always started the season with three non-conference games... usually smaller schools like Montana or whatever. So that seems to be a "universal" practice that happens in both the Pac 12 & the Big 10. No reason not to keep doing it... unless the "new & improved" Big 10/Big 18 powers that be decide that with 18 teams in the conference and only 12 weeks in the regular season, you can't throw away the first 1/4 of the season on non-conference games.

On the other hand, for the Dawgs, "non-conference games" would now include the Apple Cup. And old Pac 12 rivalries which used to be part of the regular season... Stanford, Cal, etc.

The Big 10 has always scheduled patsies for their first few games. If they now make these conference games, they'll just schedule these new to the conference patsies. These Pac 12 programs have zero chance at a Conference title now. They should have joined the MAC.

Pac-12 Conference has always been boring and fucked up thanks to shithead teams like Washington and The Foul Ducks. Good riddance. You can put the Utes in there as well but no one watches the Utes next to say, Colorado and Colorado is fucking doomed thanks that Cowboy hat-sporting Nazi Prime Peon Sanders.

This asshole will find new ways of drilling CU into the ground better than Lauren Boebert can do by placing her festering gob on a fracking rig. I for one have no hope and excitement for the 2023 season of CU Football. They look like fools and looooooove the media attention. After CU gets their faces smashed on their opener with TCU will Peon Prime either resign or be fired.

Already seeing reports that the "new and improved" Big 10/Big 18/whatever is going to want 10 conference games in a 12 game season, which means one of those non-conference warmup games are going to be lost. Or possibly more than that, if you want to keep that traditional last game of the season against your state rivals. I.e. The Apple Cup in Washington, or the Civil War in Oregon... since the Cougs and the Beavers are now non-conference-opponents. I've seen USC fans making similar comments about their regularly scheduled game against Notre Dame - who have been invited to join the Big 10 on several occasions, but have so far remained "independent" of a conference.

I think they should have joined the SEC, so they could start the season with Washington, Oregon, USC, and UCLA automatically ranked as the top 4 teams before they play a single game. Because those goddamned polls always favor the SEC.

Notre Dame's deal with NBC is probably worth more than their share would be by joining a conference.

Yeah.. that's probably it... since media deals seem to be what's at the core of all this conference hopping anyway. If one school got a decent deal on their own, can't blame them for giving it up. Apparently the Big Ten (or whatever number they go with) is now going to be on NBC & Peacock, so hopefully the Dawgs games will be a little easier to stream as of next year. So... one more season of hunting down the bootleg streams unless it's on Fox or CBS (the only two channels I get on antenna. Fortunately they carry most of the Seahawks games, at least)

Media is the one thing the Pac 12 has handled really badly. A few years ago they used to stream their channel for free, or at least overseas they did. I was getting the games on Kodi from some app made in Thailand, of all places. They shut that down about the time that Scumcast picked up the cable channel... and put it in their overpriced digital packages. The Pac 12 teams that actually win (Dawgs, Oregon, and USC) managed to get other channels to pick up the bulk of their games, so it's been slightly less chaotic in recent years... though the Dawgs usually find themselves in the late night slot.

Wonder how that's going to play out, if they're playing "conference games" against teams that are two or three time zones away??

Probably a realignment, I think there are already Big 10 east and west divisions. Division winners meet for championship in Indianapolis. I did read an article in the local rag about the logistics of the farthest eastern teams playing at USC or UCLA, and vice versa.

Condolences to Kristy on an absolute shitty weekend for CO football. Wasn't bad enough that the Muffaloes got quacked up by Oregon, but holy shit.... Traitor Russell & the Broncos had 70 fucking points scored against them??

Meanwhile up here in Cascadia, the Dawgs continue to dominate the very competitive PAC 12. The conference maybe dead after this season, but it's going out in high gear. Not at all bad when you can take all your starters out of the game for the 4th quarter, let other team pretty much have the field, and still win by 27 points.

Seahawks ain't doing bad either. Half the fucking team is injured, but they're still winning.
