    Dave’s Done Bad Shows/Can’t Sing

I have seen a number of threads, regarding Dave having bad shows, really sounding bad sometimes, blah, blah, and would like to address that.

From watching Dave since ’77 I would say, yes I have seen Dave put on some bad shows. He has always had a consistency problem and still does even today. Most musical genius’s like Dave have this same problem. I’ve seen Eddie put on some bad shows also over the years, must less the current spectacle.

When I stood 10 ft from Jimi Hendrix in ’69 and watch him in concert, he sounded like crap for the first 20 minutes until he got “dialed in” on his drugs he was poppin and dope he was smoking behind his amp in between each song. I’ve seen other greats like Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughan (who I got to know personally before his tragic death), Freddie Mercury-Queen, Steve Tyler-Aerosmith, AC/DC, Ozzy, and other historic rock legends put on just horrible shows.

But what many of you people are missing here is, I, and many others, have also seen the above music legends, including Roth, put on the most awesome and gut moving concerts, I have ever witnessed in attending over 300 shows in my lifetime. The type of concerts, that left you emotionally exhausted but on a buz/high for weeks or months. The type of concerts, that you knew leaving the building, you just witnessed a rare lifetime event.

I’ve seen Hagar three (3) times, with & without Van Halen, and am very open musically. I’ve never had any of those same above feelings, and I assure I do know rock music and the biz! I’m not a Sammy hater, I don’t have a problem with him until recently, and IMO he did some decent work with Van Halen. However, bottom line, short and sweat, Sammy’s just not in the same league as Roth and the aforementioned musicians and he damn well knows it!– End of Discussion

Is Diamond Dave a Clapton, Vaughn, Mercury, Tyler, Ozzy. No, not from a music critic’s/historian’s standpoint. But he is without question, among serious rock music professionals, one of the greatest hardrock frontmen in the history of this business, a musical and creative genius, and a great songwriter, musician, and video producer – End of Story.

Roth being the funniest guy, I have every heard, other that Sam Kinison (RIP bro we miss ya!) was and still is just icing on the cake!!!!!!!!!!!

Roth's voice shows signs of strain, but I never considered him to be the greatest straight up singer on a technical level, even back when classic Halen were at it's peak.

In terms of singing, somebody like Ronnie James Dio blows Dave away. But Roth's fronting abilities are beyond dispute. It's the combination of his vocal skills, showmanship and knowing how to get a crowd going that makes Roth an exceptional frontman, and a perfect match for Van Halen. Even on record, where the impact is non-visual, Roth's vocals and Ed's guitar compliment each other.

Yeah, the guy earned legendary status doing alot of screaming. In the US Fest vid, some fans went to the trouble of creating a "thank you" card on a bed sheet. Listen to Cato's Nagoya show...he can still do it. Obviously, time will take it's toll and I could give a fuck less.

              Great Post GS !

Apart from the small appreciation of Hagar, that whole post was most excellent.

Geeeeeee, what can you say! But people bash Dave re bad shows, I have seen Eric put on some real stinkers, from the Cream days on.

Hey, if you have not seen "Concert for George" (11/29/2002) that Clapton put together and also played, you have missed a historic treat. That thing is just awesome! I have never been a Beatles fan, but he and Jeff Lynne together do some killer stuff.

Check out the on-line video of Clapton here:

I've seen Dave in '99, '02 and '03 and it seems to me that his voice has gotten better each time.

Re: "Small Appreciation of Hagar/Me kinda liking Van Hagar Shows a little"

Let me explain life here…… For us older bulls, the hard-rock era is pretty well over. It’s getting to be hell just to find 1-3 quality shows a year to attend.

“Kinda Liking Hagar”… FLOL…...Righttttttt!. Let’s put this matter into clear perspective that almost everyone's missing at this fantastic forum/shrine. I tolerated Van Hagar shows for ONE reason. A ton of really hot & high-quality chicks loved VH-II. Would Diamond Dave want me sitting at home and not scoring on all that hot stuff, just because he wasn’t fronting VH. Hell No......It would be un-Dave-Like for god sakes!!

How do I know? Simple – Is Dave boohooing around he is not fronting VH….Hell no! The guy is up at Southampton, NY, ten days ago, flaunting around with the rich & famous, and hot chicks. Further, that older blond chick (with the little dog) that is sitting on Dave’s left in some of those pics I posted on my “Dave’s Southampton Experience” thread, is one of the biggest porn chicks/operators on the East Coast. She is like the female version of Al Goldstein of Screw Magazine,…real raunchy stuff and worth millions from her porn enterprises. She has used all that dough to buy her way into the society circles and knows everybody!

Her midnight cable TV “anything goes and I mean ANYTHING short of multi-felony arrested” smut show in New York City, has been on 25 years and is like an institution their. When I first looked at those Southampton Magazine party pics I died laughing at that damn Roth and this whole mess. Pure Diamond Dave! Rome burns for Spammy and the VanReHash boys, we argue about it ad-nauseam, and Dave lives the life of grandeur and carnal sin. We should all have his problems?! Hell, that crazed sex manic overstuffed barracuda ate Roth’s big bologna for a quick high protein starter snack! Don’t worry, it will all be in my thread update - Dave’s Southampton Experience–Part II.

“The 2004 Van Spammy Tour” – Same deal, I know many hot rock chicks that want to see this show and I have 3 sets of “Eddie side” stage front comped tickets. Most of these babes just want a reason to get out and have a good time. Me, I just want to get my cane waxed. Hell they’re not musicians, or music biz people. They don’t give a damn about most of this stuff we yap about.

THIS IS what has me upset and the reason I rejoined this fantastic site after many years of absence. VanReHash is so bad, with my “tone perfect ears”, I could never endure through a show and listen to that crap! Unfortunately, I don’t drink or do recreational drugs, so no help there in getting through this concert. I’m “crapped out” on this deal unless something changes for the positive, and www.rotharmy.com is the best site in the world to monitor this mess and share opinions.

Well, thank you for listening to my “No Van Roth” and “Eddie’s Now A Hack” pain, AND more importantly “Ain’t gonna be no after the show rock pussy pile-driving” sufferring! The therapy of this site has been greatly appreciated ..sniff…sniff.

That could be the one semi-reasonable justification for liking Van Hagar that I've ever heard. It's similar to tolerating a chick flick with a girl on a date. Only semi-reasonable tho!
