I have seen a number of threads, regarding Dave having bad shows, really sounding bad sometimes, blah, blah, and would like to address that.
From watching Dave since ’77 I would say, yes I have seen Dave put on some bad shows. He has always had a consistency problem and still does even today. Most musical genius’s like Dave have this same problem. I’ve seen Eddie put on some bad shows also over the years, must less the current spectacle.
When I stood 10 ft from Jimi Hendrix in ’69 and watch him in concert, he sounded like crap for the first 20 minutes until he got “dialed in” on his drugs he was poppin and dope he was smoking behind his amp in between each song. I’ve seen other greats like Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughan (who I got to know personally before his tragic death), Freddie Mercury-Queen, Steve Tyler-Aerosmith, AC/DC, Ozzy, and other historic rock legends put on just horrible shows.
But what many of you people are missing here is, I, and many others, have also seen the above music legends, including Roth, put on the most awesome and gut moving concerts, I have ever witnessed in attending over 300 shows in my lifetime. The type of concerts, that left you emotionally exhausted but on a buz/high for weeks or months. The type of concerts, that you knew leaving the building, you just witnessed a rare lifetime event.
I’ve seen Hagar three (3) times, with & without Van Halen, and am very open musically. I’ve never had any of those same above feelings, and I assure I do know rock music and the biz! I’m not a Sammy hater, I don’t have a problem with him until recently, and IMO he did some decent work with Van Halen. However, bottom line, short and sweat, Sammy’s just not in the same league as Roth and the aforementioned musicians and he damn well knows it!– End of Discussion
Is Diamond Dave a Clapton, Vaughn, Mercury, Tyler, Ozzy. No, not from a music critic’s/historian’s standpoint. But he is without question, among serious rock music professionals, one of the greatest hardrock frontmen in the history of this business, a musical and creative genius, and a great songwriter, musician, and video producer – End of Story.
Roth being the funniest guy, I have every heard, other that Sam Kinison (RIP bro we miss ya!) was and still is just icing on the cake!!!!!!!!!!!
