Virtually all of the other GOP 2016 primary candidates couldn't handle Trump trolling them at the debates. If they ignored him, they looked feckless. If they tried to match him, they came up inadequate when compared to him. Yet so many of them took the bait, swung at his pitches in the dirt, inevitably missed and appeared foolish in doing do: if you're gonna sling mud back, sling it.
Trump is totally comfortable slinging mud and insulting people. To me, he appears most at ease and natural when doing these things. He slings it himself, and doesn't need hired help a la Lee Atwater, Karl Rove, James Carville to do so in order to appear above the fray. Trump loves the fray, and that is part of what Trump's supporters love about him.
