    London's Burning

Britain burns: Riots spread through UK cities

LONDON (AP) — A wave of violence and looting raged across London and spread to three other major British cities on Tuesday, as authorities struggled to contain the country's worst unrest since race riots set the capital ablaze in the 1980s.

In London, groups of young people rampaged for a third straight night, setting buildings, vehicles and garbage dumps alight, looting stores and pelting police officers with bottles and fireworks. The spreading disorder was an unwelcome warning of the possibility of violence for leaders organizing the 2012 Summer Olympics in less than a year.

Police called in hundreds of reinforcements — and made a rare decision to deploy armored vehicles in some of the worst-hit districts — but still struggled to keep pace with the chaos unfolding at flashpoints across London, in the central city of Birmingham, the western city of Bristol and the northwestern city of Liverpool.

Authorities acknowledged that major new bouts of violence had badly stretching their resources.

"The violence we have seen is simply inexcusable. Ordinary people have had their lives turned upside down by this mindless thuggery," police commander Christine Jones said.

The riots appeared to have little unifying cause — though some involved claimed to oppose sharp government spending cuts, which will slash welfare payments and cut tens of thousands of public sector jobs through 2015.

Others appeared attracted simply by the opportunity for violence. "Come join the fun," shouted one youth, racing along a street in the east London suburb of Hackney, where shops were attacked and cars torched.

The crisis will be a major test of Prime Minister David Cameron's coalition government, which includes members who had long suspected its program of harsh budget restraints could provoke popular dissent. He reversed an earlier decision and cut short his summer vacation in Italy, rushing home for a meeting of the national crisis committee on Tuesday morning.

Cameron was expected to seek to toughen the response in meetings with ministers and police chiefs.

Rioters were left virtually unchallenged in several neighborhoods and able to plunder from stores at will or attempt to invade homes. Restaurants and stores fearful of looting closed early across London.

Disorder flared throughout the night, from gritty suburbs along the capital's fringes to central London's famously posh Notting Hill neighborhood. London's Ambulance Service said it had treated 16 patients, of whom 15 were hospitalized. Police said 334 people had been arrested and 69 people charged with offenses.

Three people were arrested on suspicion of the attempted murder of a police officer left hospitalized after he was struck by a car in north London in the early hours of Tuesday.

After dawn, police said, the unrest appeared to calm, either quelled by police or after rioters drifted away.

Violence first broke out late Saturday in the low-income, multiethnic district of Tottenham in north London, where outraged protesters demonstrated against the fatal police shooting of Mark Duggan, a 29-year-old father of four who was gunned down in disputed circumstances Thursday.

A brief inquest hearing into Duggan's death will take Tuesday, though it will likely be several months before a full hearing is convened.

Duggan's death stirred old animosities and racial tensions similar to those that prompted massive riots in the 1980s, despite efforts by London police to build better relations with the city's ethnic communities after high-profile cases of racism in recent decades.

But, as the unrest spread, some pointed to rising social tensions in Britain as the government slashes 80 billion pounds ($130 billion) from public spending by 2015 to reduce the huge deficit, swollen after the country spent billions bailing out its foundering banks.

In the south London district of Croydon, police said a 26-year-old man was shot and seriously injured Monday but were unable to say immediately whether the incident was linked to rioting there.

A massive blaze ravaged a 100-year-old family run furniture store in Croydon and sent thick plumes of smoke into the air, forcing nearby homes to be evacuated. In the Clapham Junction area of south London, a mob stole masks from a party store to disguise their identities and then set the building on fire.

Sony Corp. said a major blaze had broken out at its distribution center near Enfield, north London, damaging stocks of DVDs and other products. So many fires were being fought in the capital that Thames Water, which supplies most of London, warned that some of its customers could see their water pressure drop.

Dozens of people attacked shops in Birmingham's main retail district, and clashed with police in Liverpool and Bristol.

In London's Hackney, hundreds of youths left a trail of burning trash and shattered glass. Looters ransacked a small convenience store, filling plastic shopping bags with alcohol, cigarettes, candy and toilet paper.

East London's diversity was on display amid the charred hulks of cars and the smell of burning plastic. Some looters were young women with manicured nails and customized BlackBerry smart phones. Others wore dreadlocks and stained shirts or appeared to be homeless.

"This is the uprising of the working class. We're redistributing the wealth," said Bryn Phillips, a 28-year-old self-described anarchist, as young people emerged from the store with chocolate bars and ice cream cones.

Phillips claimed rioters were motivated by distrust of the police, and drew a link between the rage on London's street and insurgent right-wing politics in the United States. "In America you have the tea party, in England you've got this," he said.

Some residents called for police to deploy water cannons to disperse rioters, or call on the military for support. They questioned the strength of leadership within London's police department — particularly after a wave of resignations prompted by the country's phone-hacking scandal.

The small groups of youths used text messages, instant messaging on BlackBerry phones and social media platforms such as Twitter to coordinate their attacks and stay ahead of the police.

Once the preserve of businesspeople, BlackBerry handsets are popular with teenagers, thanks to their free, fast instant messaging system. Blackberry's manufacturer, Research in Motion, said in a statement that it was assisting authorities in their investigation and "feel for those impacted by the riots in London."

Police were also monitoring Twitter, and warned that those who posted messages inciting the violence could face arrest.

About 100 young people clashed with police in the Camden and Chalk Farm areas of north London, smashing their way into a bicycle store and mobile phone shop.

In the Peckham district of south London, where a building was set ablaze along with a bus — which was not carrying passengers — onlookers said the scene resembled a conflict zone. Cars were torched in nearby Lewisham, and in west London's Ealing suburb the windows of each store along entire streets had been smashed.

"There's been tension for a long time. The kids aren't happy. They hate the police," said Matthew Yeoland, a 43-year-old teacher watching the unrest in Peckham. "It's like a war zone and the police weren't doing anything. There were too many people and not enough police."

Police said Duggan was shot dead last week when police from Operation Trident — the unit that investigates gun crime in the black community — stopped a cab he was riding in.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission, which is investigating the shooting, said a "non-police firearm" was recovered at the scene, and media reports said a bullet had been found in an officer's radio. However, the Guardian newspaper reported that the bullet in the radio was police-issue, indicating Duggan may not have fired at the officer.

Duggan's partner, Semone Wilson, insisted Monday that her fiance was not connected to gang violence and urged police to offer more information about his death. But she rejected suggestions that the escalating riots were linked to protests over his death. "It got out of hand. It's not connected to this anymore. This is out of control," she said.

The past year has seen mass protests against the tripling of student tuition fees and cuts to public sector pensions. In November, December and March, small groups broke away from large marches in London to loot. In the most notorious episode, rioters attacked a Rolls-Royce carrying Prince Charles and his wife Camilla to a charity concert.

However, the full impact of spending cuts has yet to be felt and the unemployment rate is stable — although it remains highest among youth, especially in areas like Tottenham, Hackney and Croydon.

Some people caught up in the unrest insisted that joblessness was not to blame. "It's just an excuse for the young ones to come and rob shops," said Brixton resident Marilyn Moseley, 49.

Police urged communities to help clear the streets of people, and called on families to contact their children and ensure that they were not involved in the chaos. An 11-year-old boy was charged with burglary by police, and at least 100 of those arrested were aged 21 or younger. About 35 police officers had been injured in the violence, police said.

Home Secretary Theresa May, the Cabinet minister responsible for policing, and London Mayor Boris Johnson also cut short summer vacations in an attempt to deal with the crisis.

Police in Birmingham, 120 miles (195 kilometers) north of London, confirmed that officers had arrested 35 people amid disorder across the city center, where shops were being vandalized. In Bristol, police urged residents to avoid the city center after 150 rioters went on the rampage.

Tottenham was the site of the 1985 Broadwater Farm riots, a series of clashes that led to the fatal stabbing of a police officer and the wounding of nearly 60 others — and underscored tensions between London police and the capital's black community.

West Ham, a football team in east London, confirmed it had canceled a match planned for Tuesday as a precaution. However, the national Football Association insisted that a scheduled international friendly match between England and the Netherlands would go ahead at Wembley Stadium on Wednesday.

The International Olympic Committee insisted it had confidence in British authorities. "Security at the Olympic Games is a top priority for the IOC," spokesman Mark Adams said.

The hating of police is not acceptable.
If a revolt is to harden into a movement then into a resistance follow by change in outcome, the police line will need to move toward the revolt to establish the movement. Did not anyone pay attention during Libya's discourse?. I know I have not written of yea or nay in in a moment or two of Libya's concern. However, the patterns do not change.
One finds the corruption and addresses it, beginning closest of home. Therefore begin with the police. Establish which one's will address corruption and which one are corrupt. Contain the corrupt. Bless the addressers. Move on. Do this systematically through as many neighborhoods as possible.

With England, do not expect a military joining. Seek instead a navigation with law makers for corrupt judicial(judicial meaning any sort of law related individual) removal. Get them accountable.

In the grand chance that actual square miles are controlled by the movement. An orderly security force is needed, thus your security personal around you are your best asset.

Good luck. To me, it sounds as light in the loafers as an adolescent ballerina and as organized as a grade D student.

Moreover, Syria is next in line, Nigeria has made solid progress with a corp, and Palestine has their UN review soon.

    It's disgusting.

This started in Tottenham - one of the poorest parts of England - on Saturday night, and spread to other parts of London in the subsequent nights. The initial riot was triggered by protest after a man of 29 was shot by police (we do not have the full details yet, but it appears he was carrying a gun, which is highly illegal here). The family and friends went to protest at the local police station, and were largely ignored. Then the protest became a riot.

It's hard to grasp. Part of you thinks that this is what happens when lots of people who think that they have no stake in society let loose their indolence and anger; the other part thinks that it's just a chain of events on which people who want to loot take advantage.

Even if we could understand it, however, it would never be defensible. People destroying their own communities just makes no sense. I know it's trite to say but when you consider that people are currently starving in the Sudan after the worst drought in years, the actions of young British - no matter how 'poor' they claim to be - looks like the actions of the spoilt and over-privileged. Yes, times are tough - but sometimes you chose to be a victim.

(News is coming in that this has spread to 2 other cities: Birmingham and Liverpool).

I do not see any uprising as "this is what happens ". I do see that an criminal(thus by nature corrupt) element may be trying to expand by social engineering. However, there may be a valid claim wrong doing expanding.

Sudan is not comparable. Sudan is an agenda (agendas are not necessarily bad), but simply because Sudan has complex and deep thistles at this moment does not mean the rest of the world stands at ease. There is work to be done while taking in to account how to counter Sudan thistles.

But I have already made my stance on this "England" thing. It is trendy like Lady GaGa.

As you know video is not partaken, except by exception. This video is not an exception. Clearly that is the corrupt. Even with the one still I view, I can say that is the corrupt. Perhaps this very thing is what the uprising is of issue. It is the duty of citizen to report corrupt behavior, however, if such report falls on corrupt or lackluster ears, then it is the duty to speak out.
Perhaps the rising is because the corruption is systematic. If so, then this is a suitable though novice addressable.

This is NOT an uprising. It's mindless violence with no cause. It's people attacking their own communities. There was a woman on the news before saying that she woke in the night to find a rioter hovering over her bed. Just an ordinary woman. Where's the fucking cause in that?

If I didn't believe in evolution, I would use this as evidence to disprove theory. For a brief moment in watching it unfold (after many beers and in the early hours of the morning), I was in fucking tears. Out of anger, confusion, disappointment and just plain sadness.

It is a fucking disgrace and yet further proof that there are too many people who are sub-human scum. And when I inevitably come to power and establish my reich, there's gonna be one simple rule: if you act like a cunt, you will be fucked.

They should raid The City of London, Parliament, and 10 Downing Street. That's where the real crooks are. Instead they vandalize and loot family owned businesses which many will go out of business because of this. Then they complain that there are no services or stores in their neighborhoods. I think it's much like the LA riots. Just an excuse to behave badly more than anything. Setting the city on fire won't make the situation any better.

They should have waited for the olympics though. They could have outdone every other country. Instead of just lighting a big torch they could have lit the whole city on fire for the games.

I agree with everything you say - and had a very emotional reaction myself - but not with the term 'scum'. For whatever reason - and I don't have any - there is a significant proportion of our country that think this behaviour is acceptable. I really don't know how we go about instilling respect and self-worth, but terming them as some kind of sub-species just perpetuates the problem.

I heard about 20 minutes of talking heads on the radio and had to turn it off, just the usual tiresome circular stuff.

Apparently they need to be loved more/educated more/get more parenting/get loved less/get the shit kicked out of them/get thrown out the country.

    Manchester is getting ugly.

In one sense I don't understand how it has gotten so out of hand. They are children. The police seem hesitant to act too harshly for fear of being accused of heavy-handedness.

The whole riots thing is an elaborate scheme so England could cancel the match against the Netherlands tonight and avoid a huge defeat.

Problem is that it takes 2 cops a couple of hours to arrest 1 kid because of the procedures. If the rioters outnumber the cops by a lot then they can't do very much.

Put 10 of them in the back of a van, drive out into the middle of bloody nowhere and leave them there.

Repeat the prodcedure x20 (to different parts of the middle of nowhere) and you have no more riots and a lot of cold and wet kids.

The sun never sets on the british welfare system

I sure hope FORD is a fan of Ann Coulter...

    http://www.rotharmy.com/forums/newth...newthread&f=16

Those of you following the barbaric rioting in Britain will not have failed to notice that a sizable proportion of the thugs are white, something not often seen in this country.

Not only that, but in a triumph of feminism, a lot of them are girls. Even the "disabled" (according to the British benefits system) seem to have miraculously overcome their infirmities to dash out and steal a few TVs.

Congratulations, Britain! You've barbarized your citizenry, without regard to race, gender or physical handicap!

With a welfare system far more advanced than the United States, the British have achieved the remarkable result of turning entire communities of ancestral British people into tattooed, drunken brutes.

I guess we now have the proof of what conservatives have been saying since forever: Looting is a result of liberal welfare policies. And Britain is in the end stages of the welfare state.
In 2008, a 9-year-old British girl, Shannon Matthews, disappeared on her way home from a school trip. The media leapt on the case -- only to discover that Shannon was one of seven children her mother, Karen, had produced with five different men.

The first of these serial sperm-donors explained: "Karen just goes from one bloke to the next, uses them to have a kid, grabs all the child benefits and moves on."

Poor little Shannon eventually turned up at the home of one of her many step-uncles -- whose ex-wife, by the way, was the mother of six children with three different fathers.

(Is Father's Day celebrated in England? If so, how?)

The Daily Mail (London) traced the family's proud Anglo ancestry of stable families back hundreds of years. The Nazi war machine couldn't break the British, but the modern welfare state has.

A year earlier, in 2007, another product of the new order, Fiona MacKeown, took seven of her eight children (by five different fathers) and her then-boyfriend, on a drug-fueled, six-month vacation to the Indian island of Goa. The trip was paid for -- like everything else in her life -- with government benefits.

(When was the last time you had a free, six-month vacation? I'm drawing a blank, too.)

While in Goa, Fiona took her entourage on a side-trip, leaving her 15-year-old daughter, Scarlett Keeling, in the capable hands of a 25-year-old local whom Scarlett had begun sleeping with, perhaps hoping to get a head-start on her own government benefits. A few weeks later, Scarlett turned up dead, full of drugs, raped and murdered.

Scarlett's estranged stepfather later drank himself to death, while her brother Silas announced on his social networking page: "My name is Si, n I spend most my life either out wit mates get drunk or at partys, playing rugby or going to da beach (pretty s**t really)."

It's a wonder that someone like Silas, who has never worked, and belongs to a family in which no one has ever worked, can afford a cellphone for social networking. No, actually, it's not.

Britain has a far more redistributive welfare system than France, which is why France's crime problem is mostly a matter of Muslim immigrants, not French nationals. Meanwhile, England's welfare state is fast returning the native population to its violent 18th-century highwaymen roots.
Needless to say, Britain leads Europe in the proportion of single mothers and, as a consequence, also leads or co-leads the European Union in violent crime, alcohol and drug abuse, obesity and sexually transmitted diseases.

But liberal elites here and in Britain will blame anything but the welfare state they adore. They drone on about the strict British class system or the lack of jobs or the nation's history of racism.

None of that explains the sad lives of young Shannon Matthews and Scarlett Keeling, with their long English ancestry and perfect Anglo features.

Democrats would be delighted if violent mobs like those in Britain arose here -- perhaps in Wisconsin! That would allow them to introduce yet more government programs staffed by unionized public employees, as happened after the 1992 L.A. riots and the 1960s race riots, following the recommendations of the Kerner Commission.

MSNBC might even do the unthinkable and offer Al Sharpton his own TV show. (Excuse me -- someone's trying to get my attention ... WHAT?)

Inciting violent mobs is the essence of the left's agenda: Promote class warfare, illegitimate children and an utterly debased citizenry. Like the British riot girls interviewed by the BBC, the Democrats tell us "all of this happened because of the rich people."

We're beginning to see the final result of that idea in Britain. The welfare state creates a society of beasts. Meanwhile, nonjudgmental elites don't dare condemn the animals their programs have created.

Rioters in England are burning century-old family businesses to the ground, stealing from injured children lying on the sidewalks and forcing Britons to strip to their underwear on the street.

I keep reading that it's because they don't have jobs -- which they're obviously anxious to hold. Or someone called them a "kaffir." Or their social services have been reduced. Or their Blackberries made them do it. Or they disapprove of a referee's call in a Manchester United game.

A few well-placed rifle rounds, and the rioting would end in an instant. A more sustained attack on the rampaging mob might save England from itself, finally removing shaved-head, drunken parasites from the benefits rolls that Britain can't find the will to abolish on moral or utilitarian grounds. We can be sure there's no danger of killing off the next Winston Churchill or Edmund Burke in these crowds. But like Louis XVI, British authorities are paralyzed by their indifference to their own civilization. A half-century of berating themselves for the crime of being British has left them morally defenseless. They see nothing about England worth saving, certainly not worth fighting for -- which is fortunate since most of their cops don't have guns.

This is how civilizations die. It can happen overnight, as it did in Revolutionary France. If Britain of 1939 were composed of the current British population, the entirety of Europe would today be doing the "Heil Hitler" salute and singing the "Horst Wessel Song."

We all must look on the bright side and see the opportunities provided by this manufactured disaster.
Take for example the loss of the Sony warehouse. They may have lost their warehouse, but they are going to do something nice for the victim of that infamous mugging.

Sony has pledged to replace a PSP stolen from a mugging victim during the London riots.
Malaysian student Ashraf Haziq had his jaw broken when rioters stole his bike.

Whilst lying in a bloody heap on the floor in Barking, East London, a camera operator caught him being helped on to his feet by a seemingly well-intention group, who then proceeded to break into his backpack and loot the contents. A representative said: "If we can find out how to get it to him we'll replace the PSP."

This is truly generous considering Sony will be having pony up contracts, right off the bat before insurance pays them to cover their cost.

Nevertheless, even beyond the litigation, which will ensue from their warehouse being burnt down with business expecting orders and livelihoods effected by their inability to live up to contracts, is the opportunity. The opportunity for businesses to step in and fill the void left behind by Sony’s eggs smashing. This is not a big loss for Sony. Sony is a big company. It is an opportunity for independent labels to become even more independent, striving, and distinctive with stronger roots in the music we all love.

Smoke continues to rise from a Sony Warehouse, which was destroyed by arsonists in Enfield in north London August 9, 2011 - Suzanne Plunkett/Reuters

One hapless soul, Sean Michaels, still seemed to be in shock when he wrote, “ The problem is this: without the distributors delivering CDs to retailers, how will anyone buy them?”

Well, Sean the fun is just beginning. You put them in a properly posted box and send them on the way, but you must do the magic Bückstabü dance.

Anyway, though the children played with matches and burned down much of the house. The opportunities arise, if not blooms from the freshened ground.

The Association of Independent Music (AIM) announced an emergency meeting, to take place on December 4, so that labels could receive more information and support. "We will do everything we can to help the labels to minimize their exposure and manage all necessary legal and financial matters as quickly and as cost effectively as possible," AIM CEO Alison Wenham said in a statement.

The AIM addresses and phone number is on their website,
    http://www.musicindie.com/contact-us

Give them a call. See what you can do to foster new growth.

In addition, AIM has a link page full of helpful and savvy links.

As well, PAIS has a grand opportunity as it was pointed out, (unless they are actually a shell company of Sony) “The news broke through Twitter that the “[PIAS] warehouse had burnt out”. It is extremely important for everyone to understand that [PIAS] has no warehouse as such in the UK and that [PIAS] sub-contracts its physical distribution with SONY DADC in Enfield and it is their warehouse which unfortunately went down in flames.”

Perhaps, PIAS will no longer have to suckle the monopoly teat of Sony. PAIS has however, set a fund to assist artist already affected. Let us do more. Let us take to work and help rebuild a new platform.

Sony will arrange their losses quickly, because speculative lawyers will undoubtedly be willing to speculate. So though the fires did create great damage and terrible sorrow as fires often can. It also, created new ground for tender saplings to get their chance at light and rain. Godsped to all.

What a load of utter crap.

The notion that 'most' of the rioters were on benefits is yet to be proven. Those arrested and charged so far include university students, teachers, and members of the army.

It has also not been established that all rioters were 'poor', especially in areas outside of London. It seems that the majority were opportunists from all walks of life, joining in looting for the sake of it.

Add into that the fact that the same areas saw people defending and patrolling their communities on mass against the rioters seems to under-cut the argument that 'social welfare = bastardized Britian'. Here were people from the same communitites and walks of life protecting their livelihoods, families and children.

Maybe, in retrospect, flashmobbing should have been taken as a warning of what could happen. The only difference between rioting and the generally harmless phenomenon of flash mobbing is the intention of those using the technology facilitating it.

Yeah I do. Hey you never know, there might be a toilet paper shortage some day. Gotta be prepared for emergencies, right?

It has also not been established that all rioters were 'poor', especially in areas outside of London. It seems that the majority were opportunists from all walks of life, joining in looting for the sake of it.

Add into that the fact that the same areas saw people defending and patrolling their communities on mass against the rioters seems to under-cut the argument that 'social welfare = bastardized Britian'. Here were people from the same communitites and walks of life protecting their livelihoods, families and children.
Jaggy never lets pesky "facts" get in the way of his hate rants...
