The Latest: Leahy Backs Sanders in Shift From 2016
              4-5 minutes
WASHINGTON, DC - JANUARY 30: Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) speaks during a press conference at the U.S. Capitol January 30, 2019 in Washington, DC. Sanders and other members of the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives called for the reintroduction of a resolution “to end U.S. support for the Saudi-led war in Yemen” during the press conference. WASHINGTON (AP) — The Latest on Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders' presidential bid (all times local):

              2:30 p.m.

On the first day of his presidential campaign, Bernie Sanders picked up the support of his fellow home-state senator, Democrat Patrick Leahy.

Leahy, who endorsed Hillary Clinton in the 2016 Democratic primary, says he'll back Sanders this year.

In a statement, Leahy said the Democratic field was strong and "Bernie's entry makes the field even stronger." He called Sanders "a proven leader with a strong message."

Also supporting Sanders is Vermont Rep. Peter Welch, who also backed him in 2016.

Sanders is the sixth senator competing in the primary. He joins Sens. Kamala Harris of California, Cory Booker of New Jersey, Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota, Kirsten Gillibrand of New York and Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts.

              __

              Noon

Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders raised more than $1 million within hours of launching his 2020 presidential bid.

That's according to a person familiar with the campaign who wasn't authorized to publicly disclose the early numbers and spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity. The numbers were amassed less than four hours after Sanders announced Tuesday morning that he would run again.

Sanders identifies as a democratic socialist and unsuccessfully challenged Hillary Clinton during the 2016 Democratic primary.

Few candidates seeking the 2020 Democratic nomination have voluntarily released early fundraising figures.

California Sen. Kamala (KAH'-mah-lah) Harris reported raising $1.5 million in the 24 hours after she launched her campaign last month. Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar (KLOH'-buh-shar) reported raising $1 million in the 48 hours after launching her campaign this month.

              10:25 a.m.

President Donald Trump's campaign claims Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders "has already won the debate in the Democrat primary, because every candidate is embracing his brand of socialism."

Sanders, an independent who describes himself as a democratic socialist, announced on Tuesday that he's running for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination.

In a statement, Trump campaign national press secretary Kayleigh McEnany said the American people "will reject an agenda of sky-high tax rates, government-run health care and coddling dictators like those in Venezuela."

Sanders embraces proposals ranging from "Medicare for All" to free college tuition. He describes his 2020 White House bid as a "continuation of what we did in 2016." He told CBS "these ideas and many more are now part of the political mainstream."

              ___

              7:20 a.m.

Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders is describing his new White House bid as a "continuation of what we did in 2016."

Sanders notes that policies he advocated for in 2016 are now embraced by the Democratic Party.

Sanders says, "You know what's happened in over three years? All of these ideas and many more are now part of the political mainstream."

Sanders was asked Tuesday on CBS whether he believes the Democratic Party has come his way. He says, "I don't want to say that. Most people would say that."

Sanders announced his 2020 presidential bid earlier Tuesday. The 77-year-old self-described democratic socialist challenged Hillary Clinton in the Democratic presidential primary in 2016.

              ___

              6:45 a.m.

Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders says he's running for president in 2020.

The 77-year-old self-described democratic socialist challenged Hillary Clinton in the Democratic presidential primary in 2016 and said on Tuesday that he planned to again seek the nomination.

Sanders has reshaped Democratic politics and earned a loyal following with his passionate defense of liberal proposals including free college tuition and single-payer health care. But he will face off against several other Democratic candidates who also want to appeal to the party's base.

Still, Sanders' name recognition, fundraising prowess and passion for liberal policies makes him a top-tier 2020 presidential contender.

Bernie Sanders Hires Top Progressive Advocate, Faiz Shakir, as Campaign Manager
Gideon Resnick, Spencer Ackerman, Sam Stein02.19.19 3:21 PM ET
                4-5 minutes

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) has tapped Faiz Shakir to serve as his campaign manager for his second run at the White House, the Daily Beast has learned.

In hiring Shakir, Sanders brings into the fold one of the Democratic Party’s better-travelled operatives—an official with limited campaign experience but with ties to the party’s think tank infrastructure, its Hill operations and the larger progressive universe.

Shakir joins the Sanders operation from the American Civil Liberties Union where he served as national political director since early 2017. Before joining the ACLU, he was a senior adviser to then-Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) and before that he worked with House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA). He first made a name for himself as an editor at the site ThinkProgress, the news arm associated with, though editorially independent of, the powerhouse Democratic think-tank Center for American Progress.

Shakir held a meeting with his team at the ACLU at noon on Tuesday to announce that he was leaving to join the Sanders campaign, The Daily Beast has learned. His departure is expected to be announced imminently by the civil-liberties giant. At 39 years old, Shakir is almost certainly the first campaign manager of a major presidential campaign who identifies as a Muslim. His candidate, Sanders, is Jewish.

Neither Shakir nor the Sanders campaign returned a request for comment.

A team of Sanders advisers had been in the hunt for a new campaign manager since at least January, at which time the inner circle was dealing with the fallout of allegations of harassment and misconduct from former 2016 staffers. In part due to that fallout, the team was seeking more diversity among their top ranks. A number of names were floated as potential candidates, though Shakir was not among the individuals named by Sanders sources with whom The Daily Beast spoke.

Jeff Weaver, the 2016 campaign manager and a longtime personal friend and ally of Sanders, took on a different role for his second run, likely to become a senior adviser instead.

Tad Devine, a long-time Democratic operative who had worked on Sanders’ Senate campaigns and his 2016 run, is not expected to join the 2020 effort, several sources told The Daily Beast, though his firm is working for Sanders and he himself could potentially help out later in the campaign. Devine, who had a falling out with several campaign aides in 2016 and who has been ensnared in legal drama related to Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s probe of foreign influence peddling, did not return a request for comment.

Shakir spent several years during the Bush and Obama administrations at ThinkProgress, which quickly established itself as a digitally native information outlet for left-of-center Democrats. ThinkProgress primarily focused on challenging Republicans and conservatives, but also took progressive stances on policy, particularly foreign policy and national security, that challenged the Democratic mainstream. There, Shakir worked closely with Matt Duss, who is now Sanders’ chief Senate foreign-policy adviser.

After a stint advising both Pelosi and Reid, Faiz did informal work for Sanders’ 2016 run. He transited to the ACLU’s Washington office after Trump won the general election. While some ACLU veterans and alums quietly expressed concern about such a prominent role being filled by someone so closely associated with the Democratic Party, the ACLU has become a bastion of legal resistance to the Trump administration on everything from the Muslim-focused travel ban to migrant family separation, and has seen its membership expand off its uncompromising opposition.

In 2016, Shakir was the subject of animus in a leaked email publicized by WikiLeaks in which John Podesta, then the chairman of Hillary Clinton’s campaign, chided Shakir for advising Sanders’ campaign.

Haha! Yup. I need another lake house Bernie and Hillary and McCain were two huge war mongers. It's all a game. Clinton preached to the left and McCain preached to the right. The reality is a greedy quest for riches and power and old Bernie has found tell the suckers what they want to hear and take the back room money. Sure Hillary was great. I'm sure Bernie got paid well by the Clinton Foundation to take a dive out and then kiss Hillary and the Democrat's asses after they shot his presidency down. Now he's running again and he knows he has no chance in hell of winning but he will get his huge ego massaged by his stupid followers and money will flow in that he can pocket.

She would have a very high probability of winning. But I think you are right. If anyone knows presidents don't have the power people think they have and the pile of shit is too high for any president to shovel away Michelle would know. She also knows that white house is a fancy prison. She has a good life and why would she want to ruin that to be president? Naw. Michelle is too smart and sane to want the presidency. Haha!

They are all the same: every god damn Democrat and Rethuglicon. Both are Siamese Twins joined at the hip of Wall Street. Not one fucking Democratic candidate has talked about real social reform. Not one. As for master Bernie, he decided to run (this time) on declaring that his campaign is “about transforming our country and creating a government based on the principles of economic, social, racial and environmental justice,” only to say absolutely nothing about how this could be achieved. He's just anther Wall Street con who believes he's different because he dupes his voters that he is our there in the fringes "fighting for them" when he is not.

master Bernie runs and you'll have another 4 years of the F A T Orange man doing all sorts of irrevocable damage not only to this country, but the entire globe. This is what tools like slave FORD fail to understand.

2020 won't be an election. It will be a freak show that will put any reality TV show to shame. Nothing is going to get fixed folks. Be happy with what you have and enjoy the entertainment and enjoy you are too old to get drafted into someone's dumb war. Just enjoy your craft beer and old Van Halen songs. Politics just isn't worth paying attention to anymore. No real leaders running for anything. The ballot is just a menu on what kind of shit you want to eat.

master Bernie runs and you'll have another 4 years of the F A T Orange man doing all sorts of irrevocable damage not only to this country, but the entire globe. This is what tools like slave FORD fail to understand.
I think we are going to get four more years of the orange troll. As far as the economy goes that's all based on interest rates short term but this credit bubble is going to deleverage. The orange troll if he wins a second term very well could be president during a great depression. The stock market probably has one good rally left in it but it's all short-term speculation and not real investing. Most Americans don't own equities so when the stocks go south so do the rich. The rich will get pummeled in this next downturn and real estate will take a hard hit and who does that hurt? The Trump Organization who's main asset is luxury real estate and luxury real estate will not be immune from debt deleveraging. The economy will do more damage to Trump than anyone in Washington will and have a good laugh when the markets tank on his watch. He deserves another term. The Mueller Investigation will come to a close shortly. Not much will come from it as I have been saying. Trump will win another term and then see the economy tank during that term. Enjoy!
No! You can't have the keys to the wine cellar!
