A lot of bands got broke by these guys. The Police were nobodies in the states and they played a small club in Syracuse where they were seen by a Boston DJ there visiting family. They got massive airplay in Boston because of him and that broke them into the bigger music scene.

That’s gone. The more major clubs want you to pay them to play. Not even the mob who owned the clubs in the old days pulled that kind of shit.
That's a bit glass half empty though. Bands nowadays can make a multi track single or album and release it themselves internationally on all the streaming platforms for pocket money. They can then use their phones to make a video for a single, edit it with free software and put that out there and publicize it on social media all again for no cash. Back in the day that would have cost at least $100k.

On the pay to play front it depends what you mean, here the model is often effectively the band becomes the promoter so in the same way that missing out the record company taking 80/90% like in the 'good old days, there is no promoter to pay.

A typical gig we would play would be you pay the club $100-$200 for that they provide PA and sound guy keep the bar takings but the bands get the door money. I then find a couple of young support bands give them 25 tickets each to sell at $8 a time (or less if they want) from which they pay me $4 for any they sell. If they sell none fine. Another $30 for someone to sit at the door taking tickets and cash for people who just turn up and $80 for a van to move the backline and drums.

So my outgoings are $210. Worst case scenario the two support bands only sell 10 tickets each they still get paid $40 each and my break even is for us to sell just a further 20. Last gig we made a few hundred and the support bands were happy with $60 or $70 each. No one is doing it for the money anyway but it's not pay to play really. If three bands can't find 40 people to come to a gig locally then maybe a 3rd part\y promoter doesn't deserve to be out of pocket.

Small niche bands touring is more complicated and difficult but it is doable because there are still promoters out there willing to take a punt, As far as I can make out most of those bands playing at the 100 people a night rely on merch - mainly $20 vinyl to get by.

"Punk". "Corporate rock". FFS which band signed to a major label ISN'T corporate rock? Again I ain't standing in line to buy a Green Day box set, but were somehow the Sex Pistols less corporate and more legit? Nineties ca$h-grab anyone? The only band of that era that had a major radio-anthem that wasn't really corporate were these guys:

Yeah you can make music and videos cheap and throw it in a ocean of videos and music. You have to have marketing and promotion and that takes lots of $$$$$. Without it you remain a small act.

Grohl has trolled for celeb rockstar praise from whomever would give it to him for so long: he'd take it from Hagar, too. Afterward, Grohl would doubtless tweet that he never had a problem with Van Halen when Sammy was in it. All part of his likeable rock star brand.

"Hey, I'm Dave Grohl, and I liked what Van Halen did with Sammy. Plus, I was the backbone of Nirvana."

Hey, there's Ed's kid playing an old Van Halen song onstage with Dave Grohl. Remember Van Halen? Because...remember?

Why not play a Mammoth tune or two instead? Remember Mammoth? The name Van Halen had before Dave named them Van Halen? Because...remember?

We probably wouldn’t know about any of these bands if a corporation didn’t discover them and promote them, distribute their music and finance their tours. The key was to not taint the music with marketing strategies. You have to disguise your strategies and make Joe public think it’s all organic. I’ve heard over and over the biggest problem is the bands themselves. You aren’t talking about dealing with the most stable people and they self-destruct. So I guess the let’s ride the bull for four years before it bucks us reality came from that.

Anyways there has to be something desirable in all this to make people want to do it. I know what that used to be. I’m not so sure what it is now. As much as the big labels ripped people off they still wanted that big break. It meant from traveling in a van to something better and more spoils and the ego trip you made it. Sure playing music is fine but like a pirate you want some spoils.

I was talking to someone who still manages in the music business and he said the music business is bigger business than it ever has been and the trend today is to see how many likes and followers an act get on social media. I think that’s pretty lame. It used to be more focused on whether the music itself moved the talent scout. So in a way, the internet might being ruining music and not helping it. Music is about moving people. It’s like sex. The best music scouts ran on instinct, they knew talent when they saw it and heard it. Social media is too fake and too controlled to be a good gauge of art.

Most people in the music industry seem to like Grohl. Hagar? Not so much... I remember at that disastrous Rock n Roll Hall of Fame ceremony where nobody actually IN Van Halen at the time showed up to be inducted. Just the bass player who should have been in the band, and the singer who NEVER should have been.... and then they had the all star jam at the end (as always)... and Hagar goes over to Keith Richards like he's his best friend or something......

And Keef has this look on his face like "who the fuck is this idiot??"

Sammy does his rock and roll road trip and has some pretty big music people on it. If they despised Sam they wouldn’t go on his show but I doubt Alex Van Han or David Lee Roth will be one of his guests. Ha! Ha!

With a couple exception's they seem to be by-and-largely members of bands that are now casino cock-eaters nowhere near their original lineups (i.e. Foreigner). The Foos (Grohl and Hawkins) did appear but probably obviously vastly preferred they were talking to Dave. Going on AXS TV is probably part of the marketing stipulation on the contract since it seems to be that last bastion of 'classic rock" on cable...

Fatty fingers will only take him so far. Dude could never play a complete set of CVH songs on guitar.

He looked gassed after playing two.

He did play well but let’s be honest he desperately needs to lose weight.

    Inherited?

He played the two VH tunes well. He can clearly play guitar. It wasn't really shocking how well he played those VH tunes, in that by this point 40 years or more on, a LOT of people can play those tunes well now. I can play those two tunes as well as he can. So can a million Youtubers. Although in all honesty I'd be more than a little nervous (far more nervous than him) going onstage and playing them in front of that many people. I suspect more than a few of those Youtubers I mentioned would be pretty nervous, too: it's one thing to sit in your practice room at home playing the tunes and filming take after take until you get it right. Quite another to go up in front of 40,000 or whatever and bang it out well in one shot. Even when I was playing in bands ages ago, I don't think I ever played in front of more than a couple hundred people.

I'd agree he's played enough to the point where he's got some ability on the instrument. I dunno, maybe it's just the amount of time I spent learning Eddie's licks in the 1980s and listening to friends of mine playing Eddie's licks in the 1980s and hearing countless other guitar players in music stores in the 1980s playing Eddie's licks, in that long before the 2000's arrived hearing anybody playing Eddie's licks just wasn't that impressive. It was kind of impressive in the early 1980s in the sense that back then we didn't have the tab or the internet or the ability to set next to Eddie Van Halen and watch him up close: we had to figure most of that stuff out by ear. But the reality is that most people who played back then, if you had been playing a few years and had been practicing quite a bit you had the dexterity to replicate what Eddie had done. It wasn't the ability to replicate, but the ability to create something original that was as compelling...THAT aspect was what all the Eddie clones of the 1980s lacked.

But whatever. I suppose I should take it for what it was, which was a nice, innocuous tribute to his father, rather than nitpick the shit out of it.

Showbiz is the whole package. You have to look like you belong up there. To be honest, I cringed. Yeah nice job playing a bit of dad’s stuff but man, lard ass ain’t cool. I was down in Belize and Guatemala for two weeks doing some diving and hiking. Nobody down there is fat. I fly back to the states and it’s like Jabba The Hut multiplied and invaded the airport. Repulsive fatty’s everywhere.

So a lowering birth rate and fat people who will die sooner. Future generations will enjoy less traffic.

    Ha no kidding.

I'm by no means a fan of the Foo Fighters and never thought Hawkins was that great of a drummer. But hey to each their own.

But its weird he managed to garner a tribute of this magnitude. And to have TWO of them (LA one is coming up I believe). Heck, Freddie Mercury never got two tribute shows. Lol

And to celebrate what? The dude OD'd. Lets celebrate that! Yeah! Awesome.

Grohl cleverly made being a fan an occupation. Sure he can hit drums, strum a guitar and scream but he’s like a minister or politician, he’s all smiles out to sell you something. But I will give him credit, he’s managed to ride the bull and stay in the media spot light for a long time.

Was it a tribute or an excuse for promoting the living? A tribute is a nice funeral, a moment of silence, or even a monument but you don’t make $$$$ doing that.

True. So perhaps the "tribute" was used to make $$$$.

Funny but Steve Vai, that slouch on guitar, had a tough time making CVH covers work live on EEAS tours. Yeah a lot of people can cover them but getting close to the actual feel of the song and tone are a whole other kettle of fish. My point is that his tone is pretty close to Ed's, not just virtuosity. You seem a tad ornery of late...

Steve Vai is great, but his tone is a very jazzish clean sharp sound that didn't mesh well with Ed's style, even if you could argue that maybe Vai was the better technical player though I would never...

I liked EEAS but hearing some renditions of songs like Panama made be cringe and almost cry saying "Dave, WTF did you do?"...

See my latter comments and fuck off, Von Helen. You're the first one to trash other players covering CVH, you hate EEAS. That's my whole fucking point, it's not just about technical virtuosity but the actual fucking fingers that define your sound. Not just the gear and style...

I don't know if the concert itself was designed as a "benefit" show (much like the Freddie Mercury tribute in 1992 raised money for AIDS related causes) but the MTV you tube feed had a fundraising link to a non-profit called "MusicCares".

I agree Vai's take on the CVH material wasn't great. Maybe that's why Vai wasnt necessarily Dave first choice. He originally went to Steve Stevens who I think would've pulled off Ed's stuff better.

Wolfgang is very er... hefty for sure, but if you take a close look at his fingers you'll see they aren't chubby, but surprisingly rather slim.

Guy who wrote to Beato was probably that "Satan's Bush" douchetube who posted his insane conspiracy theories about Wolfie miming his bass parts to tapes on the 2007 tour.
