NY Daily News review of Sham and the Shirellas show

    Another, um, glowing review...

    Strung out

After 6-year gap, Van Halen is outta sync

Be careful what you pray for.
For years, Van Halen fans have been hoping the band would reunite with whichever big-name lead singer Eddie could stand to be with for more than five minutes.

On Tuesday, a recently reconstituted version of the group, with Sammy Hagar on the mike, hit the stage at the Meadowlands. It was the first Van Halen road show with that lineup in nine years and the first with any singer in six.

We should have been left to our memories.

The performance revealed a group as disjointed musically as they've ever been personally. While the foursome certainly seemed to give their all, they never coalesced as a band. Hagar was in horrible voice, and the sound system pummeled much of the sound to mulch.

While there were no dancing trolls or exploding drummers, there was something a wee bit Spinal Tappish about the whole thing.

Certainly, the show didn't want for a dramatic back story. First, there were the complicated hiring issues, with the band having a) canned their last singer, the ghastly Gary Cherone, b) once again shunned their first vocalist, David Lee Roth, and c) hired back the yutzy Sammy.

There were also medical issues: Eddie was playing in public for the first time since beating tongue cancer.

Small wonder he reacted so emotionally to the crowd's rousing ovation for his trademark extended guitar cadenza.

    He cried.

    Twice.

It should also be said that, at 49, Eddie looked great. He still has the ripped bod of his youth.

But you knew the band was in trouble when even an uplifting song like "Jump" stumbled. It had almost no lift, and what little there was came from prerecorded synthesizers.

For large portions of the show Eddie Van Halen seemed to be playing in his own world, concentrating more on his admirably zippy leads than on enhancing the rhythm of the band or fleshing out the melodies.

That left bassist Michael Anthony and drummer Alex Van Halen to bash and flail, together creating a great sense of fury but little groove or momentum.

In hard-rocking numbers, like "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love" or "Best of Both Worlds," the punch of the pieces came through more than their swing. In their most pop-oriented songs, like "Dreams" and "Right Now," Hagar couldn't navigate the high notes that highlight their melodic sweep.

As personally sweet as Eddie Van Halen's comeback may have been, the 10-minute solo that inspired his emotional outburst only indulged his greatest excesses. One section, which started like an sonic exploration of the heavens, ended up more like an exploration of Eddie's navel.

As with the whole show, you wanted to cheer the return of a good band, but — as a unit — they didn't seem quite there to receive the applause.

Most interesting was the review of Sammy's vocals. This is the main defence of any Spamster. Look at the fucker, he doesnt have stage presence, he's fat, he's old, he wears capri pants and sandals. *BUT* according to the Spamsters, his voice is still as great as it ever was. (Which is a conglomeration of oxymorons within itself) This was the last bastion of defence for validation of the Van Hagar reunion.

And yet we hear Spammy is not pulling it off, vocally. So any valid reasons for Sammy being back in VH are becoming less and less.

He aint got the glitz, he aint the party. He aint the voice. He aint even the Hagar voice anymore.

C'mon Ed, whilst you are finally letting those emotions run free, focus
back upon the well from whence they first sprung.

        DAVE OR THE GRAVE !!

        VAN HAGAR SUCKS !!

SAMMY, to me, could never sing. SAMMY, to me, never had a stage presence. Who has a stage presence similar to SAMMY ??? UH, BOZO perhaps. The RED ROCKER ??? What the hell is that ??? A cartoon character ??? Having SAMMY back in the band is Eddie's brain on crack and other harmful substances. DAVE in the band is Eddie coming to his fricking senses.

I agree. All this bullocks about SAMMY being able to to sing is a bunch of crap. I would rather see someone like Ted Nugent sing for VH than SAMMY and he's not really a singer but he's a lot more funny

Nice of him to notice they suck Hopefully all reviews will be similar to this or more negative. My wish is they come back to their senses. Well, Eddie doesn't seem like he ever will. Still smoking too and showing it off.

Totally agree Mate, compared to Dave, Sammy's stage presence and live energy is non-existant. The only defence the Spamsters had was his voice (which, Ive never liked) but its gone, he can no longer sing like he could. (as shitful as it was).

He wears cutoff mumu's and waddles about breathlessly whilst
struggling to contain his vocals within a single register.

Dave would be kicking ass. Eddie can cry and cuddle and be the
energetic point of focus, but the other 90% of Van Halen fans want the complete package..

Fat docile Sammy, he of the diminishing vocal ability and diminishing
set of testes, is becoming the second Mikey. Another sad little spineless yes man.

                          Ha fucking Ha !

guwapo, your a funny dude! good first response post.

"Certainly, the show didn't want for a dramatic back story. First, there were the complicated hiring issues, with the band having a) canned their last singer, the ghastly Gary Cherone, b) once again shunned their first vocalist, David Lee Roth, and c) hired back the yutzy Sammy. "

if this does not prove its not the singers and is the guitarist I dont know what will! ed has his cycles and he repeats it over and over. its ed and alex , nobody else. ed knows dave is the answer and cant imagine he wont cave sooner or later.

"In hard-rocking numbers, like "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love" or "Best of Both Worlds," the punch of the pieces came through more than their swing. In their most pop-oriented songs, like "Dreams" and "Right Now," Hagar couldn't navigate the high notes that highlight their melodic sweep. "

sammys a great singer, that what I always here from spermmy fans. hes better and has better range. well he has a different voice and to me dave has better range. they cant sing eacothers songs and its because they both have different ranges. blah blah blah! fact is sammy is old and screaming like a girl will take its toll sooner or later. I heard sam a couple years ago on a morning show and he sounded so bad I could not understand how spermmy fans say he sings so good. to me he is not a singer. dave is more of a pure singer than spermmy. atleast dave sings where sammy screams. I have never heard spermmy sound like a singer , ever!

ed is finally gonna realize with the bad feedback from fans that he sank VH. Dave is the only man that could ever bring them back to the top. they wouldnt even have to release new material and it would be the biggest grossing tour of all time and be filled with stars attending the shows. every show would be sold out! wake up ed , your not getting younger and it shows. the great VH could have made history in 96' or 00' . such a shame he missed the boat.
