I still couldn't find the exact article for you but did find an interesting interview with Eddie in the December 1996 of 'Guitar World Magazine' (Vol 16) in where he basically blames everyone and anything before him. So this is no new news - but I will post some quotes from Eddie himself for you so that I won't feel so bad about not finding the right article.
GW: "What were some of the naggin issues between you and Dave"?
The Village Idiot: "We're from different planets, we don't communicate. I'm not saying that he's a bad person at all - I actually fucking love the guy but I don't need all of his fucking negative energy around me."
Hmm...interesting since Roth (to me) wrote some of the most positive songs in the history of rock and roll. True, I'm not a Van Halen fan but you have to admit 'Jump' is such a feel good song. So, fuck you, Eddie.
GW: "What were your issues with Sammy?"
The Ponce: "He got irritated with me being involved with the lyric writing (no jokes, please - me) and he stopped being a team player. I'd say we had problems on every album except 5150. It came to a head when Sammy didn't want to work with producer Andy Johns and wanted to work with Ted Templeton instead, because Ted lets him get away with everything. Sammy was also dead against the 'Greatest Hits' package because he was afraid it would lead to comparisons between and Roth"
Gee, you think? Are you starting to see a pattern here?
GW: "Speaking of David Lee Roth, how did he come back into - and out of - the picture?"
The Brother Grim: "Dave happened to call me around the same time he heard Sammy quit because Warner Bros told him a 'Greatest Hits' was coming out and he had a few questions about the packaging. We were on the phone for 45 minutes and we apologized for things we had said back since high school...we were never really friends. I decided to drive over to his house and told him the basic idea was to do the CD half with him and half with Sammy, but Sammy wanted more of his songs than Dave's."
In other words, he used that lame excuse to fuck Dave out of the royalties he deserved; no concern or afterthought of what what the fans wanted. Eddie could care less about what Sammy thought but how convenient for him nonetheless to play the Sammy card. What a little fucker!
As for you, Panamark....
GW: "What was going to Dave's house like?"
The Town Drunk: We had a great time and just bullshitted. We smoked cigars and I hung out for about 3 hours. Then, I remembered that we had a song...'Human Beings' and I came up with the crazy idea that Dave sing on it. So I called Dave and asked him if he would be interested. And Dave said, 'sure, why not.' I was very clear that he wasn't in the band - that this was just a project. What I wanted to do was write five songs and pick the best two out of the five."
Somehow, I don't see Dave as saying "sure, why not." More like, "sure, let me talk to my lawyer to make for certain you don't fuck me over twice." As far as the "bullshitting" goes I can see the two of them together and Dave smacking him upside his head and asking, "dude, what in the FUCK is wrong with you!?"
As for the songs, Eddie went on to say "We had this pop song 'Me Wise Magic' and a shuffle 'Can't Get This Stuff No More.' Dave hated the song because of the line 'I know what you are thinking.' Dave thought it was too angry or something. I thought the song was majestic; it takes you on a ride with so many changes. I later nicknamed it 'The Three Faces of Shamus,' because of the 3 parts to the song. During the recording process, Dave and I were really becoming friends again; my heart wanted to believe that he had changed."
So first he said they were never really friends and then he said they we "becoming friends." Eddie, you make Kerry look good when it comes to indecision of an issue. So there's that take on any other songs he did with Roth - according to Eddie.
Anyway, that killed about 5 minutes...the feature goes on about the MTV awards and Eddie's choices with other vocalist he like to "work" with. I bet none of this helped, oh well. I'll keep on looking.
