Kerry himself didn't know this until just a few years ago, apparently. He's still a practicing Catholic, to my knowledge.

Technically, Kerry will NOT be the first Jewish President, as the custom in Judaism is for the faith to pass from the maternal side of the family, and Kerry's mother was Catholic. On the other hand, Howard Dean's children, for example, are considered Jewish because their mother Judy is Jewish. They also attend synagogue with their mom.

I guess I was confused as to whether Kerry is actually Jewish but is Catholic. It doesn’t matter to me because it’s Kerry’s own choice. As it should be.
