"October 06, 2004 - Let's get one thing straight right off the bat: Van Halen was (and always will be) Eddie, Alex Van Halen, Michael Anthony, and David Lee Roth. No disrespect to the "Red Rocker" Sammy Hagar, but let's face it, he was better off ignoring the speed limit and spending his time trying to open three lock boxes. In short, Van Halen ceased to be Van Halen once Diamond Dave was excised from the sonic equation. Which is exactly why the recent VH box set, The Best of Both Worlds, despite what the title may imply, is simply a waste of money and time for true Van Halen fans. Why? Because there's way too many Sammy fronted tunes crammed into the set, not to mention that it was put together rather pell-mell, with no attention paid to chronology."
    Nice!!!

      CORRECT!!!!!

      My Favorite parts:
      1) "Runnin' With The Devil"
This is a prime example of VH's early thunder. The track begins with a churgling bass grumble, a quick piano thrush, and then Eddie's chugging guitar licks sink in. Dave howls and whines, and displays one of the greatest rock voices of all time. And the chorus? Pure vocal harmonies mixed with Dave's cackling caterwaul. Brilliant.

      9) "Beautiful Girls"
This is pure Dave at his best, delivering salaciously innocent intonations over a thundering riff plastered pastiche of Los Angeles glam blues. 10) "And The Cradle Will Rock…"
Eddie's cat scratch guitar skirl drags you into this rocker with whiplash intensity. And Roth doesn't so much sing as he swaggers his lyrics in a snide manner, again evoking the persona of the Cheshire Cat crossed with the smooth tongued serpent of lore. That he peppers his delivery with cat calls and howls only adds to the frenzied spirit of the track. Plus his obtuse hipster patter in the middle--"Have you seen Junior's grades?"—is the perfectly non sequitorial lead in to E16)
      "Unchained"
From the opening scatter riffage to the rusted metal skip trace slices of Eddie's guitar to the rugged rhythmic interplay between Alex and Anthony, and the vocal harmonies, this is easily one of Van Halen's greatest burners. Hell, the chorus is enough to suck you in, but Eddie's scorch technique is unparalleled. And of course Dave kicks in with his non-sequitorial patter during the bridge, making it nothing but pure Van Halen.
      ddie's shred outbursts.
      25) "Panama"
Another huge hit for the group, thankfully this one puts the synth back in the box and lets Eddie's skirl and grind dominate the track. Oh yeah, Dave is in full force, screaming, yelping, and yodeling like only he can.
      26) "Top Jimmy"
Opening with Eddie's tapping harmonics infiltrated with chug blues scrunge, this is the virtuoso number on the album, running the gamut from thunder blues to tapped out bliss. The rhythm section is solid (Alex and Anthony have always known their place in the band, to play the solid anchor to Eddie's wild picking and Dave's plain old wildness).

      27) "Hot For Teacher"
Yet another number that eventually became a wildly popular video request. Eddie whomps it out of the park at the beginning of the song while brother Alex whips up a rhythmic frenzy. Dave is on fire, as usual, rapping and scatting in his snidely whiplash cum surfer dude banter. And those classic Van Halen vocal harmonies kick in on the chorus, solidifying the greatness of the track.

      DAVE OR THE GRAVE MOTHERFUCKERS!!!

EVH raked the strings on his guitar behind the nut (His personal favor spot) thus producing the chime effect.

Great article, except for the omission of Aint Talkin 'Bout Love.

By the way, it's incredible that Ice Cream Man is not on BOBW. It get's a lot more airplay than more than half of the sammy shit on that collection. Actually i only hear about 3 sammy songs anymore, and rarely at that.

They should just release THE BEST OF VAN HALEN: 1977-84.
And stop thinking CLASSIC VAN HALEN fans want any Spammy. 'Cause it's perfectly clear that we don't.

I can't even say I hear that on any sort of regular basis. About the only thing I can recall having heard on KGON (our classic rock channel here in Portland and the only station that even bothers with Van Halen anymore) is Roth era material...I think they played Right Now and Runnin with the Devil during the week when BOBW was released, but that was about it...we folk out here in the great pacific northwest are Roth country!

I agree with all of your additions and subtractions. I just thought it was nice to see someone other than all of us here writing about the real VH, and ripping on Van Hagar.

Here is a plug for myself:
Can i get some votes for finding this acticle? I just need attention. I have 1 vote so far. I am needy. (what a crying bitch)
