What do you think DLR means by the Yankee Rose?

I have seen the video and love the song but I am still not sure what the Yankee Rose is all about.

If you have an idea or actually know please let me know.

Cause really the DLR is back in circulation.

That's a bitchin song. Maybe not serious enough to replace the national anthem, but I play it every July 4th.

Actually, I always thought that the statue of liberty would be kind of an ugly hag, if she was real...but what the hell!!!

Real Story:

At the time Dave wrote Yankee Rose, the Statue of Liberty was going thru the major overhaul/refurbishment. It was pretty big news at the time because I believe she was coming up on a notable anniversary.

Great way to commemorate it for sure. He should have sang that on the 4th with the Boston Pops (or whatever orchestra that was)...

Actually...if it was the Boston Pops, singing Yankee Rose probably would have gone over like a "Lead Zeppelin".......

I remember Dave saying that he was envisioning The Statue of Liberty as if she were a real live fox walking down the street and he was standing out in front of the candy store being lewd (as usual) towards her. I remember him saying that it's a "Sexy type of patriotism."

I still have the interview on tape somewhere.

"It's the Stature of Liberty. Everywhere you look it's Statue T-Shirt, Statue Sweatshirt, Statue hat, Statue Burger 'Home of the original Statue Burger.' So I pictured what if she were a real gal and she was walking down the street, and it was a kinda thing like, 'Hey baby, need a hot dog to go with that shake?' But, that didn't sound very patriotic see, so I kinda had to re-dial the words a little, tighten the screws a little, and this is what you end up with, The Yankee Rose."

David Lee Roth. World premier of Yankee Rose video on Friday Night Videos 1986.

The guy who designed the statue claimed that he used the face of his mother and the body of his girlfriend.

Max, dude.....

Great avatar. Reminds me of when my fraternity worked security for Debbie Harry & Co. @ the Raven Theater in Healdburg, CA for a fundraiser!!! Toad the Wet Sprocket opened (we were all "What's with the midget drummer"?) But the guy kicked ass....I told my brothers, Ain't nothin wrong with the little people, Roth has 'em as bodyguards!!!"

She was coked our of her gourd & making eyes @ the 3 of us guarding the backstage area...funny as hell... good show!! Her guitarist/husband promptly whisked her the hell outta there when the set was over.

Played all the great songs. Who didn't dig Blondie back in the day?

Hecubus has the story right, the Statue of Liberty was being refurbished and you heard about it all the time. DLR just put his own spin on it and, if I remember right, the EEAS band went live on the fourth of July in 86 to debut it. Pretty cool.

I was surprised when he didn't sing this with the Boston Pops this summer.

Hey Hec,

Thanks for the avatar props and great story bro. So you were a Greek as well? Which frat? I was, well I guess I will always be a Kappa Sigma.

Sigma Alpha Epsilon.

I was actually fortunate enough to be one of the founding fathers at our chapter @ Sonoma State U. up here in NorCal.

One of the best things I ever did in school. The non greeks called it buying friends, I saw it as instant sex!!

MUHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAA!!!

We had SAE's on our campus as well. They were newer so I didn't know too many but you know how it differs from campus to campus? We had about 130 active members while I was there. We were the second biggest frat back then. We had the attitude of "Work Hard, Play Hard and Stay Hard!!!!" LOL!!!! Great times and I still have a shitload of brothers of whom I still consider close friends.

Our house was definitely the biggest party house among the three big ones. Oh man, now I'm getting sentimental and realizing how fucking old I am. I mean, WE always had the biggest ragers on campus.

Those were the days my friend.
