LA CROSSE, Wis. -- A La Crosse man says he threw a live electrical wire into his wife's bath hoping a near-death experience would save their marriage.
William Dahlby was found guilty Wednesday for attempted first-degree intentional homicide in La Crosse County Circuit Court.
Dahlby said he didn't intend to hurt or kill his wife. He testified Tuesday he hoped to scare his wife into realizing their marriage was worth saving.
He told jurors the wire he placed in the bath was hooked to a ground fault interrupter, which is designed to cut the electricity as the cord came in contact with the water.
Prosecutors say Dahlby tried to kill his wife, Mary, to start a new life with another woman. Mary Dahlby was not injured. She testified earlier that her husband came into the bathroom and dropped the cord in the tub, and when she jumped out, he tried pushing her back in.
He is scheduled to be sentenced in December.
