View Full Version : Latest Dave concert in Minnesota

Just got back from the show. I will qualify my review by stating up front that I have seen a few shows on the VH tour this year so kinda unfairly that is what I have to compare to.
First, location: Mystic Lake casino in Prior Lake Minnesota. Ballroom probably held about 2000 people and it was pretty full although good seats were available up to the last minute. Not a very good place to see a show. Pretty sterile. He played the same basic set that he has played since he went solo back around 1985. I have seen him plenty of times over the years and I sadly say that to me, most of the aura is gone. I know that isn't popular on this board but I think if you really look objectively you will come to the same conclusion.
The sound was ok but the backup vocals were WAY loud. You could barely hear Dave over the rest of the guys. Most of my aging concert mates were pretty dead throughout the show. Dave did his best to get all us going but not much luck.
Daves banter with the crowd was his typical shtick. Amusing but kinda corny and in my opinion he never really connected. Dave made no efforts to make contact with the crowd, didn't sign anything and only shook about 1 hand. To me this is kinda sad and when you compare it to the VH tour it is apples and oranges. Anyone who went to the VH shows and sat within the rings (I got to twice) will know what I am talkin about. If I could speak to Dave I'd say, "Dude, you are playing a casino in Minnesota in November! Shake some hands and make some effort to get us fans wantin' to come back". He never even made eye contact... He just did that thing where he blabbed to that imaginary person in the crowd.
Daves voice seems ok thought there were a couple of spots where it broke. He moved pretty good and the kicks are still head height. He wore the exact same clothes as that other casion show so look at those pics.
OVerall, to me the show was good, ok, but nothing special. Maybe it was the crap location or the diseased crowd. I can only compare it to the VH stadium show that to me were pretty fantastic. I know that ain't a popular opinion here but facts are facts. Eddie and the boys are playing stadiums and Dave is playing casinos. I would love a real Dave/VH reunion as much as anyone but we all know that ain't gonna happen.
I'd like to see others comments - rip me to pieces.

Ed's worn those pink pants for the whole friggin' tour...and Sam, let's not forget about his yellow capris and that stupid hat that we see him wearin' in every pic...but i mean, you should know that, you sat up close in the rings, and you seem to be a very objective type of idiot... ;)

and setlists...other than those two new songs, it's the same setlist VHagar's been flogging the last couple tours...but that shouldn't bother you, because you went TWICE.

sucker!

I was at the show and had a blast. I've seen Dave counting tonight 4 times.
1st with Van Halen in 1981 that was a great show.
2nd time was the Sky Scraper tour what can you say other then Ed shouldn't be able to carry Steve Vai's guitar case.
3rd time was at the Minnesota State Fair it was a good show
But tonight I thought Dave was on. The crowd seemed to be getting into it. I mean I got more pictures of the guys arm in front of me then I wanted too but what ya gonna do. No he didn't shake hands so what I saw Drowning Pool at the Rock nightclub last Wednesday and they didn't shake any hands either. They did do some signing after the show but what was Dave there for to Sing or sign stuff for fans????
He did was he was there to do. If you didn't like it why didn't you leave?
I got a lot of pretty good pictures tonight and I'll post them if anyone wants me to.

I would have got better shots but the seats (not the best in the house and security was a pain in the but. So I shot them from my seat using the only zoom that I could with the low light. I have one zoom that would have shown if Dave shaved before the show but at such slow speeds they would have been so blurry you couldn't have seen anyway.
I was able to get about 200 shots in. About 45 or 50 that I would say are worth putting up. I'll get on that in the days to come and post some more. Had fun taking them and I'm glad I could share.

hey Golden AWe, I was Tier C, Row S, seat 107 and 108. Fake thread and fake review? I think not. Sorry all you super fans don't want even close to an honest review. You are all exactly right, Dave is still just as good as he was in 1985 and nothing has changed.... Come'on... I saw the Eat'em and Smile tour too. That was amazing!!! An amazing band behind him, not a Weird Al look-alike and a bunch of other studio guys. Trust me, I still love Dave and all the music he helped create but sometimes you have to take that long hard look in the mirror. Sorry to burst all your bubbles.
And to those who rip on the VH tour, I saw them in 3 different states with varying numbers of crowds. St. Paul was full, Moline Il was near capacity and Fargo was empty. Why must you all be in this huge pissing match with a band that Roth was in 2 decades ago. Time to let go of some of the angst.

angst? what angst? who said dave is the same as '85? there are anonymoys users like you two, three a week who come here "to tell the truth". gets boring to hear the same shit over and over again, we already have threads for that. other kind of morons have "the sheep pen" and "now they're gonna put you into the pen". you sound like a wanker but please don't feed them.

you needed two seats? you must be a big boy?

why would you go to a hagar-concert? you must be a moron to buy 6 van hagar-tickets.

ouch!
Good to see you all put out the welcome wagon for newer members...

If you read my review carefully I actually said that the show was good. I am not a basher of either group and I would hope you guys could be a little more critical. I kinda see that is not gonna be possible when you have a "sammy hagar insult generator" but at least give it a try.

I am not here to "tell the truth" or expose Dave. I am sure he's a great guy. I get the whole stage show thing he does but it seems a bit canned now.

and to quickly address the two seats thing (I'll give you credit for a good rip) I went with someone else and they were the ones who said "He looks just like Neil Diamond" when the show ended.

oh yeah, and in my review I am pretty sure I blamed the atmosphere. This was a diseased place to see a concert and the security staff (guy wearing the Tan suit coat especially...) were pricks. Kinda weird to go to a show and be able to walk freely with your arms spread between the front row and the front of the stage.

you are all correct... It was the greatest show since the Beatles played their rooftop fairwell. You all should have seen Dave jumping off the rotating drum riser! I swear he was 40 feet in the air! Then he did this 19 foot karate kick and it went through a solid brick wall. I think he played for 10 hours just to appease the fans that would not stop asking for more! The chants of "we want more!" echoed throughout the halls of the 90,000 seat arena. It was amazing and I am gonna go to all the shows on the tour! Hell, I might even try to hitch a ride on the private jet that flies him all around the world.

Hey! Now that's funny right there!
I was at the show also. I have seen Dave: Fair Warning tour, Diver Down tour, 1984, Eat 'em and Smile, 2x in 2001 in MN. I was in the 1st row left of center last night with my brother. Dave let the 2 of us sing in the microphone during RWTD and let me sing during Panama. It was a great time be able to do that, and see him up close. He was doing his same old act with the crowd. He loved my buddys wife that we were with. Of course she flashed him. He wouldnt sign my book either. I made it easy for him; held the book up and had the Sharpie with the cap off.

I thought it was a great show. I was up front though. The room was horseshit! The crowd was bullshit. How many "Bluehairs" would you like at a DLR show? There was about 2000 people.

You know, everyone, the review that 4771eddievan has given us here is pretty much right on. I think the band was ok. The room was terrible, Dave was good but we cant expect a 1984 show. He is 50 fucking years old now. He does better than 95% of all 50 year olds do though. I think it is funny that he kind of has a little bit of a "gut" on him. Accept it, he is getting old.

Let's not rip this guy to shreads over an honest review that I think is pretty dead on.

The deal is this, smart ass, you went to see van hagar -- what was it -- 2-3 times this sham tour and you think THEY sound/act/look/draw as they did in the day?

Think that all you may, but if so it is the absolute defination of delusional given the facts of the matter.

The chants of "we want more!" echoed throughout the halls of the 90,000 seat arena. It was amazing and I am gonna go to all the shows on the tour! Hell, I might even try to hitch a ride on the private jet that flies him all around the world.

This guy sounds like a REAL class act... Listen, Hagar Sympathizers should GET LOST... As soon as you said you saw VH twice this year, we know where your loyalties lie. We knew that the review was not going to be anything other than "his band looks like 'Wierd Al's'"... Then just being a sarcastic dummy ON TOP of it just makes matters worse... did you particularly come here looking for a fight? If so, get a life, cuz we got other things to do... I can accept the fact that you didn't think the show was as good as US Fest., or the EEAS tour, but you must ALSO consider that Dave still rocks ass, and gives 100% of what he has on any particular night. As for his band of "studio guys", they've been with him for a coupla years now, and Brian Young is a MONSTER player... please remember that reviews by fans are one thing, but reviews by Hagar fans are a completely different ball game...
PS -"Wierd Al's" band has been with him for 23years...

I thought Brian Johnson was with AC/DC?? He looks different too... Once again, as someone who actually paid for and went to THIS show, I kinda think it was below where WE should want it. I too saw him at the Fair here and it was great. Saw him at another outdoor show in Maplewood - it was GREAT. This one - not SO great. IF you all want to be a bunch of un-thinking, un-critical drones, so be it, but I ain't gonna eat his turd and tell you it ain't shit.

Hmm....lets see, registered one day.
I know!
You went to the Dave show, became enamored with the Diamond one to the point where you decided to rush home, find a fan site, and share some common ground with fellow enthusiasts!

No, strike that.
In a tidal wave of sophmoric creativity, you decided to come to the site and make your first post extremely agitative as well as "current eventish". Guess what Aristotle? You aren't the first cat-turd-brained cretin to giggle our way. Pull your fucking pants up, turn the computer off and go pour yourself a nice tall glass of ice cold clorox.

Saw the show last night also. To me there is no Van Halen without David Lee Roth as the frontman. This is the first time I have seen Roth live and I have never seen Van Halen w/ or w/o Roth. That being said...

The setting: The show was pretty corny being held in a casino and all. Had a Vegasy atmosphere to it. Not good for party rock n roll Van Halen music.

The crowd: The crowd was a mixture of mid 20's to late 40's. Alot of worn-out looking women there. The crowd seemed pretty tame for the most part. Mostly due to the fact that the show was being held in a lame location. A large bar or small auditorium would have been much better.

The music: The band was very good at reproducing Van Halen music live. The harmonies were right on.

Dave: Dave was Dave. He has an unrelenting smile and a very magnetic personality. I could have sworn he was running in the back to do lines of coke or something. Not sure if he does drugs anymore though. But he was sure happy! Dave was good at cracking his little corny jokes to keep the crowd entertained. Dave's voice was pretty good... Not even close to the old Van Halen days. Seems like he can do most of the low singing stuff and occasionally belts out a nice scream. There is just so many screems in the old Van Halen music...how can we expect a 50 year old man to still do this? Dave is still very athletic. Can your 50 year old parents jump in the air and do a roundhouse kick? I don't thinks so.

Conclusion: I think rock 'n roll music such as Van Halen is a young man's thing. Part of the appeal with the old Van Halen was Dave's sex appeal. Let's face it, the guy was in great shape, very athletic and could scream like a madman. None of this is the case anymore. It is in a way kind of sad to see Dave like this. I was excited to see Dave but in a way I felt nostalgic and sorry for him. I would like to remember him as the high flying, long haired, charismatic, screaming frontman for one of the greatest party rock 'n roll bands of all time. Would I see Dave again? Probably not...especially in a Casino or any other corny venue. Would I see Dave w/ a Van Halen reunion? Definitely. Dave is Van Halen as far as I am concerned.

Trust me when I tell you, people who are saying Dave has lost it are hagar fans in disguise. I saw DLR last year at Universal Amp in L.A. and in Anaheim at House of Blues and he was great both times. Crowds at both places were going apeshit the entire time. On their feet and singing along to almost every song. His voice was fine. If you're trying to say he's lost it because he's not exactly like he was in 81' or 84' then you're a fool. Of course he's slowed down a little. JUST LIKE EDDIE & ALEX have slowed down. And hagar is losing his voice, NO TWO WAYS ABOUT IT. I've seen several reviews from newspapers that have echoed this sentiment in addition to my own first hand account of hagar NOT being able to hit the highs in many songs when I saw the DLR/hagar tour in 2002. Not to mention hagar is ridiculously out of shape now and is bulit like my dad. I saw "fans" reviewing DLR in 2002 on the DLR/hagar tour and they were saying at the L.A. show that I attended that the crowd wasn't into Dave. TOTAL BULLSHIT. The crowd was on its feet the ENTIRE time during DLR's set. During hagar's set as soon as M Anthonly left the stage literally hundreds of people went to the bathroom/consessions. I'll NEVER forget it. I saw no such mass exodus during Roth's set. DLR's band kills VHagar at this point and DLR is in much better shape than Bozo the clown. Typical hagar fans. Don't know their ass from a hole in the ground.

I agree with 4771eddievan. I liked the show. Beleive me. I flipping hate Van Faggar. Roth is the MAN. But, to be honest...his voice is gone. Which is too bad cause I grew up listening to him. To me there are only 6 Van Halen albums...the first 6. It's just too bad that Roth's voice is shot. I personally confirmed there will be no Roth Van Halen reunion because Roth's voice couldn't handle singinig 3 nights per week. No Way! There is a reason there has not been a reunion. Dave's voice is pretty much gone..... : (

you guys were at the same show? Cuz 4771 said "Daves voice seems ok thought there were a couple of spots where it broke". And you are saying his voice was gone. Which was it?

My beef with 4771 has nothing to do with what he said about the show. I was not there. It was the way he compared it to Van Hagar.

all I said was that his voice broke a couple of times and that the backing vocals were way loud. I gave it a good rating, but some of the Dave aura had worn off for me. That could be a crap local, a boring crowd, harsh security, whatever. To me some of it was that Dave seemed a bit canned. It's not the end of the world - not every show is amazing or great - it was good/ok.
The VH comparison was cause that is what everyone here does. Half of the freakin' posts on this forum are about VH. Dave has been out of the band for 2 decades.

I was at the show....first off, let me say that MAJOR props are due to Dave's band, particularly Ray Luzier (on the heavy artillery, as Dave would say), and Brian Young. Every time I see these guys they amaze me at the way they total do justice for classic VH music. The show was typical of what we've already seen in '03, pretty much the same showmanship and setlist. Dave was slightly more talkative this time around, which was pretty amusing. I got a chuckle or two out of his "stand up". All in all, I won't bore you with another review. We're all fanatics, and this is what we expect: Dave was Dave, and his band was stellar. Enough said. Anyone speak Pakistani???

By the way, I forgot to mention, the guy who earlier posted that security was a pain....I saw them around, but it didn't stop the people around me from taking pics. I bet about 5 people near me (5th row, off to left by rhythm guitarist Hikata?) were shooting away through the whole show. In fact, I swear Dave even posed for 1 or 2.

My beef bout the security was that there was a huge gap between the front row and the stage and the guy was patrolling the area - kinda a kill joy. I would argue that my review was always very FOX news like - "Fair and Balanced". (conservative red state fuck nuts - I digress) Thanks to those who attended and largely had my back. To my detractors - keep rippin on this DLRarmy virgin. You made it fun and I can't wait to hear more clever references to my weight, to my intellegence, to me being a secret agent poser of some sort, etc... Keep on keepin on

 Your review of the show is in the minority and that is why you are singled out and ripped on. It's very doubtful that this is a reliable opinion since I and everyone else reviewing the show gave it a raving stellar performance, two thumbs up, rim jobbing, knob polishing, flag waving, ball tickling, pussy pounding, nipple tweaking giblet dropping good time! I made a comment on security also, What I meant by what I said was that I was in Tier B Row K Seat 160 I tried to get down to the next level to get near the stage and take some better pictures. This was not going to happen. It was Mystic Lake security... I would have pushed my way past and got the pictures I wanted but didn't want to risk being carried off to some burial ground and never seen again... We'll have none of that. Besides I got some good shots and Dave Rocked the house.
All and all a good night.

Reasonable...not me!

First off, 4771eddievan, fuck off. don't come into my house and insult my momma.

Second, I was at that show, front row. I was standing against the stage the whole show. Security walked right up to the guy next to me who was holding a digital camera up in the air taking pictures and said not a word. Everyone in the place was friendly that I encountered.

Third, Dave and his band kicked so much ass theyre still cleaning it off the walls. No, he can't still scream every note of RWTD, but he is vocally more sound now than he has been in 15 years. He's got the scream when he needs it. He's singing more of the lyrics to the songs than he has most of his career. He forgot no words. And his voice is still plenty good, and is still the voice of Van Halen and beyond

Fourth, his stage presence was great. He came over to the crowd often and looked into our eyes. He looked me in the eye several times during the show. He put the mic down into the crowd several times, and as far as his shtick, I didn't go to a Dave show to get Pearl Jam. I went to get a Dave show. I wouldn't expect anything less.

Fifth, No, he didn't sign autographs for people sticking stuff up to him out of the crowd. He decided to sing and put on a show instead. He could have done a Hagar and skip most of the song signing t-shirts, but I kinda appreciate that we got a show instead.

Dave is a Legend. I was honored to be in the same room with him. And the onlything wrong with the venue was that there were too many fucking sheep in there distracting the Roth Fans.

I agree 100%. Great fuckin' show. Dave's voice was better than ever. Security was nonexistent on the right side off the stage. Everyone was bellied up. It was a free for all. Dave grabbed some hands (okay only women) and made plently of eye contact (okay, mostly women). The stories were hilarious and not the same old schtick. The crowd was a strange mix; but only because of the venue being a casino and members get discounts and shit. Whatever. Who was paying attention to the crowd? Sorry, when Dave's in the room; I don't see anyone else.

After having some time to reflect on my recent attendance to the DLR concert in MN I need to retract some of my earlier comments. I had said I wouldn't see Dave again. Now, I feel that I would see him again most definitely. Dave rules! I think going into the show I had pretty high expectations & unrealistic ones because I have never seen him or Van Halen live before. After having some time to digest what I experienced I now realize how fortunate I was to be able to see Dave live and can now only hope for a reunion.

Hey, better late than never. Most people who have any negative comments about Dave make the same mistake. They feel the need to compare. Compare his voice to how it sounds on the recordings. Compare his moves to 25 years ago. Compare a small theater show to a Van Hagar arena show. Comparing is the only way some people have to evaluate an experience.

I went there expecting to hear great classis VH songs sung by the only voice that deserves to be singing them. And I was not disappointed. The rest was all icing on the cake.

Specify, specify, specify.

Dave went solo 'around' 1985?

Same basic set he's played since going solo? Inaccurate. Might have been more apropo to say same basic set he's been using since he resumed touring in earnest in 1999, although even that doesn't apply since you don't even bother to list what tunes he played.

Has been commented on already, but bears repeating: Van Hagar didn't play stadiums this year. Undermines your credibility.

"When you compare it to the Van Halen tour it is like comparing apples and oranges," but then you go on to say part of the reason the show wasn't as good as Van Hagar's is that Dave didn't slap as many hands as Van Hagar did, which seems comparative to me. When you preface your point with the apples to oranges analogy, this implies that there is no basis for contrast in the first place, which:

A) undermines what you then went on to profess later, and
B) is inaccurate as comparisons between Roth and Van Hagar
are inevitable

I have no doubt that you didn't think the show was all it could or should have been from your experience, and despite your clear Van Hagar bias I'll give you the benefit of the doubt in terms of your machinations, but when you are clearly mistaken on points of verifiable fact (not talking opinions here) and combine that with a general lack of information, your whole premise boils down to you liking the show but not being clear enough in your own mind as to why you couldn't rate it higher than you did without trotting out the typical "sheep" line of reasoning.

Doesn't wash here.

I enjoy reading dissenting views here that have some if not all of the elements of a well-thought, reasoned opinion. Suffice to say, your post doesn't fall under the category.

Look forward to you coming back and making another attempt when you're willing to put some effort into it. Remember: just because Eddie and Sammy can't be bothered to try doesn't mean you have to follow suit.
