Hagar: I'm not leaving Van Halen again

World Entertainment News Network
Posted November 8 2004

Rocker Sammy Hagar lashes back at Internet reports claiming he's set to split from Van Halen again, instead insisting the reunion shows are the band's best ever.

Reports Hagar was due to leave the group after its current U.S. tour sparked a fuss among Van Halen fans last week, but he claims the rumors are just that.

"Plain and simple, I never said I was quitting Van Halen. There has been no discussion as to when or where we're going to pick this show up on the road and do it all over again cause quite honestly (after) 80 shows since June 11, wow, I'm bushed," Hagar said in a posting on his Web site.

"But baby, we are rockin'. The adrenaline is pumpin.' We're having a blast and you need to come check it out for yourself. If you ain't jacked when you get there, I guarantee you you'll be jacked when you leave."

Good. I bet they're never playing with Hagar again after November 19th. They're trying to play it nice because Hagar doesn't want people to think they're breaking up before they come to the show.

Personally, I think it'd be grate if they put the thing out of it's misery 10 seconds from now.

I think they should play the whole "we are breaking up" angle... it might boost attendance.

I agree.

FAREWELL TOURS (even if people don't believe it) always sell more than just a standard tour. LOL...I guess Van Hagar would find it kind of humiliating to make their "Farewell Tour" the same tour as their "Reunion Tour".:)

You won't have to wait very long for that. Arguably it has already happened.

I absolutely can't believe they would charge fans 500 for the close up seats to see Ed play hammered with the Mach II lineup.

Get Ed an intervention then call Dave. If not, then bring on a kickass rock album from Dave.

Dave is the only one with any credibility. You can't believe a word that Sam or Alex (the new leader) says.

BRANDON, you are an upstanding gentleman. Please dont refrain with your punching next time. I would love to see some chunky middle aged loser singing "She puts the Milk in my Cornflakes" (Or whatever) getting a large punch in the face. Photos of said incident would be tremendous !! here's the review

Van Halen rocks hard at Copps
By Graham Rockingham
Additional Articles by this Columnist
The Hamilton Spectator

Cathie Coward, the Hamilton Spectator
Hard rock staple Van Halen, featuring Sammy Hagar, right, and Eddie Van Halen, rolled into Copps Coliseum last night as part of a North American tour.

While the opening act, Jonas, wailed on through an uninventive set of '70s-style classic rock, the Copps Coliseum beer garden was filled with deep philosophical discussion last night.

A single question dominated: Who was the better Van Halen frontman Sammy Hagar or David Lee Roth?

"David Lee Roth was all about sex ... and partying," said one leather-clad veteran of the local rock scene.

"Sammy Hagar was all about love."

And you knew from the way he said it that love was a bad word.

"Yeah, but David Lee Roth is playing Casino Rama and Sammy's here with Van Halen," came the reply.

All heads around the table nodded in silent awareness of the truth.

There was general agreement that this question - along with other imponderables like why rock 'n' roll guitar solos went out of style - had no tangible answer.

It all became moot somewhere around the fifth song in this concert when the real frontman of the band, Eddie Van Halen, picked up a power drill and ran it up and down his the neck of his guitar. It sparked the same kind of metallic thunder being used by the U.S. Army to unnerve the insurgents in Iraq. This is the stuff that Van Halen fans had come to see.

It didn't really matter if Sammy or David Lee, or a stuffed panda bear for that matter, was singing lead vocals for the band. The crowd wanted Eddie.

And that's what they got. The centrepiece for the show was a ripping 20-minute guitar solo. Eddie on his back. Eddie playing his foot pedals. Eddie twisting the volume controls. Eddie running hand over hand up and down the neck. Eddie kissing his frets. Eddie, Eddie, Eddie. Guitar idol!

Even at 49, he's the sort of guitarist who doesn't bother going through the motions of stripping off his clothes bit by bit through the show. He starts off shirtless, six-pack abdomen in full glory, shoulder tatoos for all to see.

This is not to say that Sammy Hagar was just a stuffed panda bear on stage. Oh, no. Hagar may not be a sex machine, but he sure knows how to strut his stuff through 25 years of platinum selling albums. His solo version of I Can't Drive 55 was phenomenal. He even jumped down into the crowd to share a smoke with some overenthused fans. How he got back up on stage, of course, is another one of those imponderables.

Sharing the vocals on many of the songs with Hagar (especially the older ones made famous by original vocalist Roth) was bass player Alex Van Halen, who wowed the well-lubricated audience with a virtuoso solo on his custom made "No. 7" black bass while sucking on a bottle of Jack Daniels whiskey. It was stirring stuff and helped explain why the band was playing so loose last night.

By the end of the night, Van Halen's performance left you wondering that age-old question: Why did rock 'n' roll guitar solos ever go out of style?

Nickdfresh
11-15-2004, 10:08 PM
Alex Van Halen was playing bass eh? He probably played it better than that cunt Mikey! Where the fuck does the Hamilton Spectator get their writers from?
