What CD sounds the best in your collection? and by that I mean not the actual music. I mean the technical issues such as the recording, mixing, engineering and such. Do any stand out? Are any louder, crisper, and more intense than the others? Kind of like the Van Halen Remasters series compared to the origional CD's.

My favorite five sound-wise (but not necessarily musically) are:

Radiohead- Hail to the Thief

Green Day- American Idiot

U2- How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb

Led Zeppelin- How the West was Won

The VH Remasters

The best thing to my ears is Pet Sounds.

Brian Wilson was an absolute master at recording in the studio, with the wonderful help of Chuck Britz at the console.

It might have been recorded in 1965, but it sounds just as clean as anything released today. But it's analog, so it's even better.

AC/DC - Highway To Hell
Deep Purple - Machine Head (25th anniversary)
Thin Lizzy - Jailbreak
ZZ Top - Eliminator, Recycler (Afterburner sounds a bit too slick right now... Maybe next year. :D )
Pink Floyd - The Wall

Something from the Finnish section:

Hurriganes - 25 Golden Greats (featuring an INSANELY deep kick drum sound on some songs)

The Power Station.

I was always a sucker for huge drum sounds.

Flame away...:)

Good call! Pet Sounds has had a huge influence on the recording industry.

Call me crazy, but Tom Petty's "Wildflowers" production is really good. Crisp.

VAN HALEN-DIVER DOWN (REMASTERED).

IT CAME OUT BETTER THAN THE OTHER 5 BY FAR.

HTWWW is an excellent choice. Just a tad better than the audience tape!
