Sharks kill teen at Adelaide beach
    December 16, 2004 - 8:23PM

Police and beach-goers look for the body of a young surfer taken by a shark at West Beach, Adelaide.

Friends watched two great white sharks attack and kill their 18-year-old surfer mate off an Adelaide beach today.

The man was taken by the sharks while surfboarding behind a boat at West Beach, about 10km west of Adelaide city centre.

One shark attacked the man after he fell from the surfboard, tearing him in half, authorities said.

The other shark took the man's remains.

Police and South Australian emergency services said there had been no sign of the victim or the sharks since the attack, which happened about 3.30pm (CDT).

SA Sea Rescue Squadron spokesman Frasier Bell said one of the sharks, also known as white pointers, was believed to be about five metres long while the other was about 4.5m long.

He said the attack happened 200m-300m offshore on a hot day at a crowded beach.

"He fell off the surfboard and the shark appeared and took him," Mr Bell said.

"It tore him apart ... apparently it tore him in half and the other shark came in and took the rest."

The victim was being towed in a boat containing his three 16-year-old friends, two of whom witnessed the attack.

The four, all from Adelaide's western suburbs, had been on the water for just 30 minutes before the attack occurred.

"They were just boys having a good time, the weather was perfect and they were just out doing what young lads do," Mr Bell said.

He said the teenagers tried in vain to rescue their mate.

"They tried everything they could think of but unfortunately the sharks had taken him by that stage," he said.

"They're in deep shock, they're a wreck. You can just imagine what the victim's parents are going to go through."

Asked if there was any chance the victim had survived, Mr Bell said: "No, none whatsoever".

SA police chief inspector David Lufty_said beaches in the West Beach area would be closed as the search for the killer sharks continued.

He said that in the two hours immediately after the attack no items of significance had been found, lending weight to fears the victim was killed instantly.

Mr Bell said there had been recent reports of shark sightings off Adelaide's metropolitan coast, with the sea squadron issuing a shark warning a couple of weeks ago.

But one concerned local said authorities did little to spread the message of the shark sightings.

Gary Bittle, from the nearby Grange Surf Life Saving Club, said he saw a white pointer swim under his boat while offshore at Grange last weekend.

"We assume it's the same one," Mr Bittle said, referring to today's attack.

The last fatal shark attack off an Adelaide beach was in 1991, when 19-year-old Adelaide university student Jonathon Lee was killed by a white pointer while diving off Aldinga Beach, in the southern suburbs.

      Sharks ARE fucking scary.

If I was swimming in the ocean (which I would never fucking do in the first place) and a hungry shark crept up here is what I'd do -

      1. Scream
      2. Give it the finger
      3. Drop my pants and piss
      4. Force myself to shit in the water
      5. Smear the floating poo all over my body
      6. Scream again
      7. Jack off one last time
      8. Launch my great white at the great white

Mezro...get that on film Mr. Spielberg...

It is awesome. The cameras they attach to these surf boards to make them look like seals on the surface and watching those bastards come up from the bottom and WHAM.

            Unreal.

Like Mez says ... it would be like Eddie Murphy in "Delirious" ...

"And then the big brown shark came ..." ... cuz I would shit.

Drop a speaker in the water playing When It's Love, and the

sharks will stay clear. On the downside, every nerd and Linker at

You'll kill all the aquatic life that way.

Mezro...even plankton will scream...the zooplankton (copepods, arrow worms and invertebrate larve) would likely seek cover in any available anus...

Two attacks this week in Oz..

Another on the Barrier Reef, this guy was stupid. He was spear-fishing on the reef.. He had actually speared a fish which was bleeding. Having dived on the reef, and seen the amount of normally well fed sharks that live around it, I would never fucking spear a fish !!!

The Shark literally bit this dude, didnt like him much and spat him
out. But the guy died from the massive injuries.

Like Ash I have seen a Shark at close range, snorkelling.
I always thought I would have a Mezro type of reaction.

But I actually froze solid. I couldnt move. I just lay there frozen
and watched this big bastard swim off, then suddenly I
                        snapped out of it...

Ah well, at least I know how my body reacts when there are
sharks close by now.. Ive since heard this is not a bad
reaction to have, under the circumstances.

Oh, if you can poke the fucker in the eyes before he bites
you, or hurt his snout, he will retreat...

Can you imagine thinking, "Ok, Im gonna poke you in the
eye motherfucker !!" as it swam towards you...
Problem is most attacks you dont see them coming......

I live about five minutes drive along the coast from where the attack happened yesterday.

South Australia is probably the world wide capital for Great Whites, but most attacks occur well away from the metropolitan beaches of Adelaide. It's like 'Jaws' here now. It's all over the TV and radio and everyone is staying out of the water even though it's fucking hot right now.

One of the sharks was filmed from the air and sea this morning just 50 metres off the Grange Beach jetty, not far from where the attack happened. It's huge! About 17-18 feet and wider than a family car. The kid never had a chance.

A tourist actually photographed one of the sharks from the beach earlier in the day. It was very close to shore, probably 30-40 metres out. The size of its fin in the shot is staggering. They are trying to chase them away now and if they hang around they will try and kill them, which is causing some debate. They are protected here.

I used to do Surf Life Saving in these waters. For IRB training you would be dropped out in the deep, left there for a few minutes treading water (sometimes they'd take their time coming back for a laugh), then the IRB would finally come back to practice picking you up. Get the chills thinking about it now.

                              you guys won't believe this,

                              my aunty and uncle
used to live right there in
                              that part of adelaide!

i remember we went there one year,
actually saw 'jaws' at the cinema.
                              i didn't bathe for a week.

                              funny, too mark,
you froze and i would have looked
like i had an outboard on me!
                              he he...

but my fella swam underneath me,
and i got the impression he didn't see me.

of course, he would have known i was there,
so i just got the hell out quickly.

and did i mention he was big?
3 or 4 metres tip to tip easy.

                              just watching him (her?)
                              silently glide along down there
was an awesome sight i'll never forget tho......
