Cool pic! Do you watch the Game Show network? I do if I can't sleep. Gotta love those old newlywed game episodes!

Well, Wink, actually, she never caught me...

Aliases don't really matter. Pretty easy to tell who's who if you give a shit. Sheep thread titles that serve no purpose other than to stir the pot are equally transparent.

Fuckin' A, Natty!

Swear it has gotta be the same 4 or 5 sheep registering under several pseudonymns that have been posting here since Feb of this year.

Either that, or the sites that cater to EVH/AVH and Hagar are so lame that they feel the need to come here and get some juice in their net lives. Can't believe there are that many lame fuckers out there. Then again, Van Hagar 2004 selling 8,000 out of 13,000 tickets says more about the sheer number of suckers still out there than it does about Van Halens waning draw on the concert circuit.

as I say...I sometimes go behind our enemies' lines and it's unbelievable what's going on there...and the sites for being lame...what do you expect from a site where you have to go through "rules" like this before posting:

Debate is encouraged here, however name calling and abuse isn't. The aim of the game is to get your point across without abusing the bejeezus out of your fellow users. This is intended to be a fun forum to yak it up with fellow VH fans worldwide, to keep everything enjoyable, so try and keep the following guidelines in mind:

- Above all, please respect the Admins, Mods & other users of this site. They are all Van Halen fans, and therefore can't possibly be bad people.

- Criticism of band members (past and present) is OK if its legitimate. 'Bashing' threads are not OK. It's at the moderator's discretion to decide if 'bashing' is occurring, and close the thread if warranted.

I mean...this is in "main" at the linx...nuff said;

Well, my wife bought Long Road to Cabo for me for Christmas. I wanted to say that of all of my music DVDs, this one is the best. Not because it is Sammy, but there is just a lot to it. There are two DVDs to it, and there is a lot of stuff on each one. It is very entertaining. He really lets the fans into his little world. The cameras go on the plane, in the dressing room, backstage, his house...you name it. It takes a class act to really hook up his fans with a quality DVD like that is all.

See, I went on and registered at the links about 2 or 3 years ago, printed out a bunch of interviews then went on my way. Last time I can recall taking part in the Links Wars was when a bunch of us were on DDLR.COM during the period where this site was being worked on.

After reading a bunch of posts here about what a bunch of jackasses the linkers were, recently decided to check it out for myself. It's funny how the rules you mentioned don't apply to Eddie Grunts shitting all over anyone who posts anything pro-Roth. There are a few over there who stick up for Dave, and they get dumped on by everyone. Kind of to be expected, right?

Pretty much what I discerned (here's a revelation for ya) is that it's basically a pro-EVH bias that drives the place. The criticisms of Roth over there are essentially parroted quotes and downright plagiarized lines from EVH/AVH/Hagar interviews. Am fairly certain that if Roth were in the band today and EVH/AVH said they had made a mistake with Hagar all along, the linkers attitude would follow suit.

Me, I don't think everything Dave says is some kernel of wisdom and not everything he's released is to my liking. Overall, he gets high marks in my book. At his worst, he still never fails to entertain. Not everyone on this site agrees with that, and it's the very disparity of opinion here that makes the site interesting. At the links, the uniformity of opinion makes the place as bland as post-1985 Van Halen music, but the utter lack of backbone there is what really turns me off. That's why linkers fare so poorly when they get over here and start spreading their kool-aid - just a bunch of of wooly thinking with a safety-in-numbers mentality. No wonder they're called sheep.

Some of you need claim to be so fucking carefree and funny, but you're some of the most uptight mofos I've ever read. My site does fine, it serves and purpose and I'm proud of what we've done there. I'd like to see any of you spend your own bread and start a board, and let's see how long it takes you to keep it going with 13,000 members for over 5 years. Such a bunch of arrogant dickheads. At least I can come here and fuck around, you guys take this shit so fucking seriously, as if it matters. Drop the holier than thou BS too. This site has as many pitfalls and nonsense as any other community. Believe me, I think most of you are confused sheep too, so what the fuck ever. Now stop being so fucking angry and serious all the time, it's boring. The war was over years ago, nobody cares. There is no uniformity of opinion, you fuckers just think that in order to have a argument about this stupid band, you have to sit and berate each other and post porn. God forbid anyone have a difference of opinion and choose to try to have a civil discussion. What's funny is most of you guys are definitely not as tough and as arrogant as you come off on these boards, most of you are genuinely nice people. When people get on these stupid ass sites, they turn into the biggest bunch of assholes, hiding behind their stupid keyboards.

It's not a competition, I'm glad you have a successful site. You should know what a fucking pain in the ass it is then, certainly with that many members.

I'm totally civil on here when discussing VH, which is rare in itself because I simply don't care about the band much anymore. But I'm always able to see other's opinions. Plus, I think I take the mostly vicious comments pretty lightly.

You must have me confused with my many "fans" and the mass amounts of idiots who come here slamming Dave 24/7.

Seems kind of shitty to just cut everyone off at this point. It's a community for a lot of people, most of them just like to shoot the shit with each other, like they do here. Van Halen is almost secondary at this point, at least to those I've talked with. I never post about Van Halen much on there myself, because I'm bored with all of it.

It's a total 100% pain in the ass, and I don't really know why I keep it open, I just do. Put in a lot of work over the years, and just not ready to say bye yet I guess. Same reason Sarge didn't just walk away from here when it was gone for a year or so. I get no personal satisfaction from running it anymore, zero. I'd rather just post and enjoy myself at all these other sites anonymously that's for sure.

No Brett, I know who you are and don't have you confused with anyone else.

And yes, I can appreciate the effort of running a high traffic site. I do it for the payday, mostly, but there is a "help your fellow human being" thread among it all as well that in the end gives me the most satisfaction.

Consider this- I know for a fact that the CVH base dwarfs the Hagar era from radio listener research surveys, and the gap only widens yearly as time marches on. It is a legitimate landslide in CVH's favor. No contest, to the point of being an eye-opener even for those knowledgeable of the sales facts. But..... All one really need do is turn on the radio to know it, as major market programmers in ratings battles go by these listerner surveys like the gospel. It is, literally, what people want (and do not want) to hear.

Point being, when I've visited the links I get no sense of the CVH era truly being celebrated and honored. Especially, when it comes to one David Roth and his towering presence (to this day and forevermore) in regards to the band and their influence on the rock landscape.

Apparently, you have no interest in growing the site, but from a pure marketing standpoint you are catering to the minority segment of the VH niche.

I don't cater to any group of fan, you guys have made that distinction because people who like all eras of the band post there. And the idea that fans of Dave can't post there, or they're banned. Please, people are banned because they deserved to be banned. And the list is very short, you guys are under the impression everyone is banned. Give me a break, I think maybe now there are a total of 5 or 6 different people banned...people who come back with 50 different aliases. And hell, I've removed bans and given second chances to just about anyone who has asked me.

You know, believe it or not, there are some huge Dave-era only fans on my site who won't post here or DDLR because they don't like the atmospheres and attitudes here. These are the same people get into heated debates at my site about how much they hate Sam, but don't feel comfortable here. So it does go both ways.

Rogue, if I'm doing such a bad job, why are the numbers so good? If I'm catering to the wrong crowd, why am I getting 5 million page views a month? Go on Alexa.com, I don't know how accurate that is, but we're beating this site significantly, destroying the VHND, and now getting more views than the Official VH Site. And all this with me not doing much. So what am I missing here?

Right, there is no financial benefit for running the site, it's all based on personal satisfaction. And when I wander around and see people saying unbelievably cruel and untrue things to me, I get very little satisfaction from any of it. Which is why I want no part of it anymore, and you wouldn't either.

I don't think you so much set out to cater to that niche, as much as it was perhaps allowed to happen over time.

I really have no idea of what your guidelines are, nor the mindset of your moderators as a collective. Still, the site as a whole comes off as disrespectful to David.

Some of the wild types here are the trade-off, I suppose, of having a wide open forum. I could post at length about certain issues and problems here, but overall the trade-off has to be counted in the positive column if you ask me.

Alexa is somewhat accurate, at least for higher traffic sites. This place, for one thing, does not achieve very high SERPS in Google, etc. on key phrases people would search for with Van Halen in mind.

Likewise, the long down time here further hurts search engine ranks, as does the large number of re-directs employed here... The VHND became a joke, and nothing more than a vehicle to hawk wares. Nuff said there.

Bottom line, given all that the traffic here is very substantial and impressive according to Alexa. It greatly surpasses Dave's official site, as does my business site. No promotion, no SEO gets you nowhere as mentioned above... that applies to the official VH site as well. I kick their ass, too.

My "minority of the niche" comment holds water like the Hoover Dam however, no two ways about it. What you are seeing is mostly an effect of the "active" base being more centereed around this past summer tour, etc. If Dave were to rejoin, you'd see your traffic quadruple overnight. I guarantee it.

Just did a quick Alexa scan for sh*ts and giggles, and really all the sites we're discussing are in the same relative ballpark...

Alexa rankings for 12/29/04

88,168 - rotharmy.com
81,929 - Official Van Halen site
79,713 - vhlinks.com

(keep in mind friends, the lower the number the higher the traffic)

There are all types of people on there. People disrespect Sam, Dave, Eddie, Al, Mike, Gary, Sherman the dog, nothing's gonna change that. What do you want me to do, make it an exclusive club like this one? The site is for Van Halen, that's what I cater to. Point blank, that's it. Dave fans like it here because they can do whatever they want, and say whatever they want, and know they're going to get backed up for sure. And hey that's great, why do I care? I appreciate what this site accomplishes.

What do you want me to do, hang out a sign and say, VHLinks likes Classic Van Halen? Ok for you I will.

Rogue, I don't know about all that Alexa stuff, people like you just did, tell me it's fairly accurate and a good measure of traffic.

I just get a laugh out of all of you guys telling me how shitty my site is, how it's a failure, and nobody wants to go there. How I suck, don't know what I'm doing, etc. etc. Yet somehow, I'm kicking everyone's ass including the official site. What promotion do I get? Where has VHLinks ever been mentioned? Nowhere. The Army has been mentioned in articles, and on VH1. I have no promotion, I get dicked on Yahoo's search results, yet somehow the site is still on top. I'm not taking away from this site's success, I think it's a testament to hard work. But to suggest I just sort of lucked out into this thing is pretty fucking insulting dude. I've put in the time, I just don't much anymore, it runs itself after all this time.

There ya go. Thanks for posting that. Don't forget the VHND sitting at like 160,000 or something. :)

Come on man, you don't think it's in some way cool that a stupid fan site is beating the Official VH Site? ;) Shit this place almost is too, and probably will be soon.

I can remember when the talk was hot of Dave returning a few years ago and the Alexa rank here was like 40,000 something.

Don't know what you were drawing during that time Brett, but I seriously doubt the official site has ever achieved such traffic.

Frankly, I'm a bit surprised at how quickly traffic to this place regained to a high clip considering the long downtime it went through.

They might have had a couple of gold records because of the innovative guitar playing but after the novelty wore off (and it would have) they would have been done. I've said this before many times but unless you were there (and my guess is you weren't if you debate this) you will never understand ROTH's ENORMOUS APPEAL. In many people's eyes DLR was VAN HALEN. When most people thought of VH they though of DAVID LEE ROTH first. And when the MTV age was ushered in it was UNMISTAKEABLE who was drawing in the crowds. I'm a musician and a valuable lesson I learned a long time ago is that the vast majority of people buying rock albums are not musicians. ROTH realized this (obviously) and created a whole new type of rock frontman that was emulated by legions of other bands. That is why when you see these lists in magazines of the top 50 or 100 frontmen of all time DLR is usually in the top 5 or 10. That is why you'll rarely meet ANYONE who thinks Vhagar was even comparable to VAN HALEN if they were around in the late 70's and early 80's. I saw VH in 84' and the bottom line is it was DLR and the boys. And that is how the crowd looked at it. In school the next day all I remember people talking about was DLR. Not Eddie VH. Of course Eddie was of great importance musically, but DLR was what set VH apart from all of the rest of the bands. Like I said, you had to be there to get it. Sadly most of the hagar fans I've met or heard talk about this band were not there. And they don't get it.

Brett

Dave was the show, but don't say people weren't drawn in by Eddie and his playing. When I wanted to play guitar when I was 13, I wanted to be Eddie Van Halen, not David Lee Roth, although I loved what Dave did. Dave's image I think is what people associated with VH, but Eddie was a huge man, come on. Dude I saw VH in 1984 too, and people were going just as nuts for Ed as they did for Dave. Now come on, be fair. I know you want to hate Ed, but be honest. Ed's playing also set VH apart from any other band at that time. There's a reason why Ed's playing was so influential, and it wasn't because people liked Dave best. It was the combination that made VH what it was. Dave was the perfect mouthpiece and showman for that. Don't revise history. I went to school the next day and said I saw "Van Halen," not "Dave and his backing band." If you're implying that's what VH was then, you're full of shit. No crowd going to a Van Halen concert saw the band like that.

Like I said before you're a typical guitar player who worships Eddie. You just don't understand that the majority of VH fans buying albums and going to concerts were not guitar players. PERIOD. And yes I saw VH in 84' 2 times in 2 different cities (in the same state) and the crowd was totally going apeshit for ROTH. And no they were not into Eddie in the same way. Funny, I remember going to Daytona Beach around 83' or so and seeing a VH Tshirt with a picture of ONLY DLR on the front with the VH logo on it. I NEVER REMEMBER SEEING ANYTHING LIKE THAT with just a picture of Eddie on the front. Brett your agenda is plain for everyone to see. Problem is it's a joke. Vhagar were not comparable to VAN HALEN. And everyone who remembers 78-84 VH knows the real truth about who the star was in that band. Guitarists who worship Eddie don't have a f'ing clue and they never will. Revise history my ass, I'm recounting the truth. When DLR left VH they went from selling 6 million albums to selling 3 million albums. And a sold out tour to a tour that had plenty of cities with tix still remaining at showtime. VH NEVER sold out my home town after ROTH left and they stopped coming alltogether after the disappointing turnout of the FUCK tour. The Monsters Of Rock tour in 88' was suppose to be a yearly event when they first decided to put it together. After the disaster of the Vhagar led tour they scrapped that idea quickly. If you don't realize that a ROTH/VH led MORock tour would have been much bigger than I PITY YOU. I knew many of my friends who stopped going to Vh shows after ROTH left and many others who talked of the disappointment of seeing them with hagar while lamenting that the magic was gone. VH's legacy is with ROTH, and greatly because of him. Every news article I saw about this "reunion" tour had something to say about ROTH and most of them were campaigning for his return. Many even made fun of the hagar led lineup. If Eddie were as important as you claim this wound't happen. And it wouldn't matter who the singer was. But we all know the real truth. ROTH comes back for a short while in 96' and the greatest hits album debut's at #1 and ends up going double platinum. The rumored tour is the talk of the industry and the rock public. hagar comes back (with your idol Eddie) and the album barely goes gold despite 3 new tracks and the tour has disappointing results to say the least not even averaging 9,000 per night. Yeah Brett, it's all about Eddie.

Brett

Oh whatever dude, I understand fucking perfectly, I was all of 13, hardly a typical guitar player worshipping Ed. I didn't even know how to play you dummy, I was a fucking kid. I didn't know from anything like that. I was a fan of the band, there wasn't all this retarded anger in 1984. Nobody went to school and said "Dave rules, Eddie sucks, it's Dave's band." That's something that morons say in 2004, creating pretend drama about the fans' perception of the band in 1984.

What agenda? Dude seriously what are you talking about? I am not even talking post-Dave shit. Are you trying to pick a fight with me for some reason? Who the fuck is arguing VH was better with Sam? Dork.

Your point is to say VH was all about Dave, nobody cared about Ed, or anything else. Right? Ok then. Well you're wrong, and you're either stupid, or just plain saying shit to drive a stupid argument.

And what is your hometown? Certainly not LA. VH sold out plenty of times with Sam here, so just drop that stupid argument. Not even sure why you're even making that argument. I know you can't help yourself, but at least try to tell the truth once in a while.

Brett
12-29-2004, 04:31 PM

Actually I posted info that Blabbermouth posted as being a list from Billboard Magazine. A list that is still on Blabbermouth's site right now. And I said so at the time. As for the rest like I said before, you're a Eddie nut licker. Obvious to everyone here. I never said Eddie was unimportant (LIE --naughty boy). But like I said before, VH lost half of the sales they enjoyed from 1984 to 5150. The tour for 5150 was less successful, and I still have NEVER encountered anyone who remembers VH t shirts with only pictures of Eddie on them between 78-84 when ROTH was in the band. When ROTH was in VH it was mostly about ROTH in the press. Same thing in 96' while it lasted. You just hate it because you swing from Eddie's balls and probably believed everything he said post 85'a about the original breakup. You've invested a good chunk of your life in Eddie VH, you can't admit you were wrong now. Trust me I get it. FOOL.

Okay, look, this is RIDICULOUS. Brett did NOTHING wrong here as far as I can tell. Some asshole posted in pretending to be him, to give him grief, and everyone on this site jumped at the chance.

Do I agree with his taste in music? No. Do I like his site? No, it's a little too much of a pian the ass to deal with, as others have noted. and, BTW, thetruthbaby, you've nailed how i feel about the whole thing.

But he's a good guy, who does take his free time to provide a service - a FREE service for his peers and fellow fans. You want him to come here and start pretedning to be somehting he's not? All he's done is defend himself, his (inexplicable) taste in music, and RESPOND to some of the accusations thorwn at him.

Do I know this guy? No. Am I a member on his site? Lord, no. am i glad he comes here occasionally and shares his point of view? ABSOLUTELY: moreso than some of the racist, misogynistyic, anti-semitic (and that makes a lot fo sense on a dave ROTH site) members on this board.

What's obvious is I backed you into a corner with your silly rant, and now you're mad. I know what you posted from Blabbermouth, but it wasn't very accurate was it? So it really wasn't the complete truth as you claimed it was, was it?

Shirts with Eddie on them during the Dave era? Hmm....dude I was too young back then to remember what shirts they had. I can't really remember that many apart from the ones that had VH logos on them, or the '82 'Sheep' tour shirts. If you say there were no Ed shirts, ok then there weren't. No sure what that proves, but ok.

No you said when you went to school to talk about the show, it was all about Dave. I say bull-fucking-shit to that. There wasn't this division in the fan base that there is now, where you felt you had to take a side. There was no fucking side to take.

Dave was in the press? I would hope so, he was the fucking singer of one of rock's biggest acts and a great spokesman for the band. Who the fuck is denying that? Ed got his fair share of press from the guitar nerds, I realize to you that doesn't make his contributions worthy of much, that he was revered by such losers and musicians, but whatever. I forgot that chicks who wanted to suck Dave's dick after the show are the legitimate fans that matter to you.

Like I said, to people who were old enough to remember -VH in the mainstream was mostly about Dave during his tenure. And fuck yes most of the people who talked about the shows the next day were talking about ROTH, not some fingering technique that Eddie VH did during his solo nimrod. What you CONTINUALLY fail to realize is that guitarists do not make up the majority of VH fans. Not even half. Eddie has a pretty significant loyal legion of guitar fans, but you do not sell nearly 6 million copies in a year and a half (1984's numbers) to guitar players. Not even remotely close. And if you saw them in L.A. then you need to realize that L.A. is the entertainment capital of the world. There are a lot more musicians in L.A. (and have been) than in ANY other place in the U.S. with the possible exception of NYCity. So it's not comparable at all with the rest of the country. I saw VH 2 times in Nashville TN and Knoxville TN on 1984 and it was more about DLR than Eddie, EASILY. And my cousin saw them in Indianapolis on 1984 and said the same thing. Sold out in advance and the crowd completely in the palm of DLR's hand. I don't know what in the hell you think you remember but DLR was THE star of the band. Period. I was there for the entire tenure. Eddie was important but DLR was the king of the rock world. Once DLR left, Eddie took more of the spotlight. Everyone who was old enough to remember knows this is true. FOOL.

Brett

Yes I'm in LA, we are the rulers of the world here. Thanks for letting me in on the obvious. After 34 years here, I was a little unsure.

Dork at 13, do you think I was running to school to talk to my friends about Eddie's fingering technique after a show? I might have needed to know how to play guitar first of all, and understood anything about it. Stupid ass. I probably said something like, "Wow the show was great, Dave looked cool and was funny, Eddie played cool stuff." And guess what fucker, I was the one buying the albums and watching MTV. You know who MTV's target audience was? Me, my age group. And I'm telling you that to a 13-year old fan, the whole band was cool. If you can't handle that, well then too fucking bad.

I didn't say ALL VH fans were musicians, jesus man. You just make it out to be that anyone who was one was some turd who didn't matter, and couldn't possibly have an opinion on the band that didn't involve sucking Dave's yank. But the stupid whore blowing Dave backstage for some blow....now she matters.

Again, let me clarify, because you obviously can't read, so I will repeat it for the 200th time. When I saw VH live in 1984, I wasn't a musician, I was a 13-year old pre-teen who liked their music. Yes Dave had the crowd going, and it was as spectacle, but I still didn't go to school next day and go on and on about how great Dave was, as if it was the only thing that mattered. I said the show was cool, the band was cool. It was pretty fucking simple back then. And I was there the whole "tenure" as well, just a little younger than most.

Hey Brett,

I haven't seen you this involved in a VH conversation in a looooooong time. That's pretty funny. How were your holidays, good I hope?

Anyway, back to the crowd.

I also saw Halen live in '84 and I initially DID want to go cos of Eddie cos I played guitar a bit. However, after the show I did happen to walk out more of a Dave fan cos I felt he owned the show. My bitterness towards the other three never came into play until they hired Hagar. That's neither here nor there but I didn't walk out saying that Dave was better than the band cos back then I had just gone to see "Van Halen" if that makes any sense? That is STILL the best concert that I've EVER seen in my life and I've seen a lot. :)

Brett
12-29-2004, 07:18 PM
I haven't really felt like talking VH in a long time. Morons like TrollGirlBoy above reminded me why.

Dude holidays ain't over yet, don't rush it. :) Yeah they were cool I suppose. Hope all is well over there.

And your comment makes total sense, and is exactly on par with what I said before. Glad someone else can be reasonable. Oh but wait, Lou thinks you're just a kiss ass I'm sorry, you can't possibly have an opinion on this that might agree with me. Nobody had any ill-will towards Ed until Dave left the band, Van Halen fans weren't pro-Dave or pro-Ed, they were just VH fans. The fact that Dave kicked ass at a show, didn't mean fans were walking around saying Eddie sucks. That came in 1986. :)

I have no problems whatsoever with Sammy Hagar being in Van Halen so long as he doesn't sing.

He's got excellent rhythm, he plays a red guitar and various latin percussion instruments such as the triangle, agogo bells, tambourine and I believe I've even seen pix of him shaking maracas.

I simply do not like his fucking voice, okay. Fuck that stupid troll-ass.

ugh. This is ridiculous.

I absolutely agree Eddie and Alex would never have found such major mainstream success (and the accompanying longevity) without Roth. But it was an absolutely SYMBIOTIC relationship: Dave found a muse within Eddie's virtuosity.

What Dave did with his hands and feet, Eddie expressed with his hands. It made for an absolutely unique one-two punch.

Yes, Dave was the absolute focal point on the 1984 tour. Ever think maybe that had something with him being gone by the next tour? Dave thought he had reached a point where he was bigger than the band, and Eddie I think was just happy to be able start getting his shitty synthesizer pop tunes released to the public.

As Dave himself said in his book, "is it Mick or Keith? I don't know." with CVH, it was a 97-97 deal.

Eddie was ABSOLUTELY EQUAL to Dave as a focal point in CVH. remember "Eruption"? remember Ed winning best guitarist polls for a million years in a row? remember Ed being considered by lots of girls in my high school to be the cute one in the band?

Now without Dave, VH would've been another Journey or Loverboy (or, at best, an exceptional Def Leppard): a pop band with a hot guitarist and a shitty, embarrassing singer, with a bunch of songs that just age BEYOND THE PALE badly.

Brett has expessed he is primarily an EDDIE fan: well, that's cool. Whatever we all think of Ed as a person, hey, apparently Roth thought high enough of Ed's musicianship to be in a band with him.

and, let's face it, if the band were to reconvene tomorrow, we'd all wet our pants and have a huge group high five.

No, DAVE saw bigger things for THE BAND. The brothers didn't share his vision. Those drunks can barely speak, let alone ACT.

But yes, lets drop the revisionist history. VAN HALEN was a BAND. The worlds greatest Singer/Frontman & The worlds greatest Guitarist. With a average bass player who sang backup vocals very well, and a above average drummer. All 4 got the spotlight at one time or another. All 4 did interviews (I still laugh when thinking about Mikey putting loose change in his shoes when he finds it on the ground, for good luck!) and all 4 where LOVED by their fans. Funny how THAT has changed!

Dave Roth's point about adding a classical-sounding name to it in a bid to seem like a legitimate music act really worked: when I was told the name was Van Halen the first thing I thougth was: like what, Van Clyburn?

Do they play Tchaikovsky pieces, too? Do they have orchestral arrangements on the other side?

Those were my unforgettable, two first thoughts anyways.

- the name "ROTH" would have taken longer to click, publicly speaking, because it's very common. But it would have worked - and when it did, DLR coulda ditched Ed and got Terry Kilgore for the band before he formed Reddi Kilowatt..

Okay, time for the thread to get back on track.

Do I honestly love and respect Eddie's playing? Abb-Zuh-fucking-lutely! He broke much ground before he was blanded down by Van Hagar's "lowering the bar."

But the first time I recollect hearing Van Halen, it was "Pretty Woman" blaring on the radio when I was eleven, and it was Dave's voice and 'car-asthma' that sold me on it! There was no wiz-bang guitar solo on that one! It was the spontaneity of turning a Roy Orbison classic into something new and a little different.

I have no doubt realistically that Ed would have had some success without Roth, but it would have sort of been more like a Mountain or Ted Nugent kind of cult status than what we know today to be Classic Van Halen or Van Hagar. Dave, largely single-handedly, marketed this band during the era of disco and the era of nauseating mello AM radio. He grabbed attention, and forced people to hold it long enough to notice Ed!

Brett
12-30-2004, 06:00 PM
I agree 100% with that. I think Ed would have done more than Ted Nugent though, he's just a better player and far greater musician than Ted.

Rikk
12-30-2004, 06:11 PM
Yes, but one thing Ted had that Ed didn't was some form of charisma. In the late 70s (not that I remember, I was a baby), Ted's image was half the show...swinging from a rope, firing his crossbow at a flaming target. Ed has absolutely zero charisma as a performer. The material would have been pretty pedestrian with someone else singing (IMO). It could have been okay, but it possibly could have ended up sounding like JOURNEY if anyone other than Roth had been on it. Hell, listen to VAN HAGAR. That's the band suddenly without Roth and having no problem sounding like a lot of other bands on the radio.

Agreed, but Ed's shtick sold well as a shy, quiet guy, that the girls wanted to be with. Plus, as quiet as he was, he was amazingly the opposite when he played. Ted was loud on and off stage. Too much screamin'! lol I like Ted, but Ed kicks his ass, then and now. If that's what this thread is about? :D

LOL. Hard to say what this thread is about anymore.

The thing is, Ed only got noticed as the shy, quiet guy because he was standing next to Roth. Without a brilliant showman like Roth, he only would have been noticed because of his playing. I do think the band would have been inevitably signed. But I also think they would have been a two or three album band with a few limited hits but none of the impact. That said, Roth also was responsible for pulling them out of the backyards and into the clubs. Maybe they would have stayed there without him.

Nickdfresh
12-30-2004, 06:37 PM
Ed needs a persona to reflect off of to find one of his own! Either that or he needs intense anger to get his ass moving.

He's like the annoying friend that can't talk to anyone else at a party, so he hangs out and annoys his one, and only, friend!

His introversion, which he has admitted to in several interviews, has more than anything else contributed to his alcoholism.

Yes yes. Pardon me while I give a gigantic flying fuck and then take a gigantic dump in your honor, featured VAN HAGAR user.:)

Sometimes I ponder on how we became such good friends. I think to myself, Rikk, life is full of good friends. But GUWAPO is the best of them. Hold on to this friendship and remember that he is true, fair and wise.:)

No it isn't a lie. I love this word "lie". You use this every time you have an issue with somebody, bud. This game with you is so utterly boring.

LOL. BT is fine in my book.:) Somebody may have lied about his part in something.

What's amusing is you really have not an ounce of an idea what's been going on at this site for months. I do know you've been PMing certain people furiously to try and convince 'em that MAX and I are idiots. I think it's sad. You're already so washed up I don't need to PM people about you.

Keep trying to bring me down, bub. You've been trying for four months. And it ain't working. But I sure as hell know how many friends you've lost over this whole ordeal. You know how many I lost? One. You. And at this point, I can see what a blessing that was.

No worries. GUWAPO is trying to make it seem like there's something else going on here. But dude is, as I said before, out to lunch. I think someone lied about your part in certain things.

I basically have problems with few people here. There are a few people I think are complete and utter losers. But big deal. My opinion is my opinion. No need to name them. Who cares? I don't even care, really. Of course, on those occasions these people post something moronic or something that displays their complete lack of comprehension concerning their own fake power, then I post something because...hey...I just don't give a fuck.

GUWAPO is definitely the most two-sided piece of shit I know of at this site in my dealings with people. But there are a few people that are very cool with him, and again, who cares what I think? Seriously, it's no big deal. I don't even need to prove anything to the people I give a shit about at this site. They all have seen it for themselves for months.

BT, I have no problems with you. Then again, I like FLAPPO too. as for that other shit, that whole incident is a few months old now. GUWAPO tried what he did with his butt-buddy, and they both got pretty much run out of this site in shame. In the end, I don't care. I have pretty much almost the same pals as I did before. In fact, I know a little more concerning who stands where. And that's good.

As for Brett, well, I fought with him a bit at the Links. In fact, I had a big fight with him at one point. And I don't think he's always been right in his fight with people. But I damn well I know that I personally like him. And I think he's been a good poster at this site, throwing aside the Links shit. And also, he's controversial. And frankly, I like anything at this site that's controversial. It's good for numbers and good for conversations. Brett is not always right. But even he knows that. But if anyone actually thinks he's a Ched Head that loves to bitch about Roth, then they already missed out on one of Sun Tzu's most important rules: know your enemy inside and out.

I really dont mind Brett either. Most times I just find him arrogant and quick to point out the mistakes of others instead of having a normal convo or debate. I also know he's neither a fan of any era (his words not mine) based on how much time has passed on waiting or not waiting for a reunion. Im sure I'll be corrected by him in no time on this post... lol As for Lou, when i was mod we kept apart from each others postings. No clicking in the convo's. The only times I debated with him was over flac files and mp3's. Elvis and I are fine with each other, I think? I'd slant him once in awhile on his 2 word posts to get his post count up. :D

VH is dead. I just hope Roth makes a good new album. Of course I want him back in VH, but VH doesn't seem to be shit right now.

Hell, most people don't give a fuck about these "wars" here. That's what I find hilarious. Certain pinheads really think that every poster at this site is waiting with baited breath for the next super attack post from one of the two sides in these wars, and the truth is, it's a little sideshow that most people don't get personally involved with. "People are starting to see this...", etc. People don't give a fuck. Some people really think of themselves as stars here, fighting Caesar's Palace on Pay-Per-View. You fight...I'll be Don King and own your ass.:D

Back on topic... I was introduced to Van Halen by a friend/guitarist who idolized Ed and thought Dave was quite gay... but there is no disputing the fact that Dave is the reason Van Halen ever became a household name.

Whether or not Van Halen could have made it with Dave is irrelevant. the simple fact is that they made it with Dave, in a very big way.

My opinion is that they blew everything they had made with Dave by joining forces with Hagar.

Good thought. I think there is ALWAYS a "never say never" thought when it comes to a real reunion. CVH stood and still does stand the test of time. 9/10, if your radio is on, and a VH song comes on. Which one is likely played? One of the 3 new ones, to help sell their latest Best of? Or perhaps a classic? :D Radio stations NEED listeners. Thats why they choose CVH. Simple as that.

no shit eh? Why is it that the newbies always have to try to make themselves famous right away? Why cant they earn their stripes the old fashion way. Hell, even I made sense when I joined. I scrapped with Hitch, Flappo and John Ashcroft, but it was far more entertaining than "Chachi" and "Holmes". :monkey:

No shit. I mean, talk about lying with shit staring at you right in the face. This guy has some pretty big balls and a tiny dick to be talking about frauds.

I don't think that VH would have gotten off the ground without Dave. He was the driving force of the band, especially in the early days. I am sure Ed would have been in a band, but I don't think it would be anything like VH.
