ok correct me if i'm wrong.....

i see alot of people on here thinking the brown sound
was the sound of eddie's guitar...

but i'm pretty sure it was the sound of alex's
snare drum on the early records...

anybody know for sure on this, i could be wrong
but i', pretty sure it was al's snare drum

that was very unique, too...but the brownsound is "trade mark" in the guitar world...you can download sounds for the rockman or line6 amps for all the VH-tunes and some are called "brownsound"-(songtitle)

EVH has said in MANY interviews that SHEMP coined the term "Brownsound" to describe his ideal snare sound. EVH thought that his guitar tone was "Brown" as well, like a killer stereo as opposed to a tinny AM radio. "Razor blades comin' at your ears" was what he wanted to avoid.

You are correct, sir. "Brown like a nice piece of wood"....was also used in the same description you are quoting. It is just another word for TONE. :D Getting a great tone is a lost art I'm afraid. None of the new bands have tone for shit.

I think the art of tone has been lost in the digital age.
Even if you have a great analog tone, its never the same
after compression.... (In my humble opinion)

I agree 100%. I love the flexibility of digital equipment, but the stuff STILL sounds brittle and harsh to my ears. There is no smoothness to it...like the difference between a fresh stamped record and a CD. I'll take the record any time...until you rake the needle across it and scratch it to hell. ;)

Yep "brown sound" was the term Alex used to describe his ideal snare sound, like beating on a log. Eddie just adapted the name to his warm guitar tone.

I'm with you guys on the digital stuff. It's very flexible, but in the end it does lack that certain something you get from analog. Especially the amp modelers. I mean they're great, and they're awesome for recording on your computer, as well as being versatile. But there's just something missing when you compare it to real tube distortion. But it's getting better. I do like the Pod XT though, I use it all the time for recording.

especially when you do covers it's great to work with these digital amps...my guitar player uses the line6 fatter and he's got everything in it from hendrix to queen to ed and back...

I actually use my Pod in front of my 5150 with a BBE Sonic Maximizer and I get a really nice sound for live band stuff actually. And yep they're great for recording the quick covers.

Ive got the Line6 POD ver 2.0.

Its a cool toy even to plug into a stereo at somebodies
place. You can get some great sounds. *BUT* it is still
nowhere near as nice as the Marshall. I find you get
a real "closed" feeling when you play through them.
I love using the natural feedback from the guitar and
amp for squeals, I can get them through the POD, but
its just not the same. It feels closed. (I wonder if that
made any sense) :)

Yep obviously it does not produce the natural feedback you can get from a real amp, this is true. Unless of course you're running it in front of your amp. But when you're recording or playing through your computer, no way to achieve that....that I know of.
