Press the start Button at the bottom left hand corner, then go to all programs, then to accessories, then to system tools then to Disk Defragmenter. Then just press the Defragment button!

If that doesn't work, if you've installed something recently, uninstall it and see if it was causing the problem.

Would probably be a good idea to do a Disk Cleanup first, then do the Defrag.... That clears out the Temporary Internet Files and other temporary files.....

Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Disk Cleanup

Tomballin says:

No problem. PM me if you have any questions, or are unsure what these programs want you to delete…TB

1. Backup all your critical files, if you can (for God sakes save the porn and music files, LOL)

2. If you are using Internet Explorer, clean out your cookies, temp, and history files.

Go to Tools>Internet Options>General then
Temporary Internet Files:
>Delete Cookies
>Delete Files
History:
>Clear History

Restart you computer after cleaning all these files out.
------

Keep these files cleaned out on a very frequent basis, at least daily, and always clean out after going to web sites you don’t know, porn sites, free software sites, etc. Also see item 8 below, that makes this process super easy.

3. Use Windows Disk Defrag

3a. BTW, Don't delete everything in the c:/Windows/TEMP file or you will be sorry. Only delete *.tmp files except ZoneAlarm Pro tmp files if you are running it.

4. Do you use Windows Office platform, if so what version?

5. Install SpyBot Search and Destroy version 1.3 and run it. Excellent program that will find stuff that Lavasoft's Adware misses. Be careful with it, don't blindly delete files with it. Also only install the program, don't do anything else with it as to IE immunization, the TeaTime program, etc. Also turn off all automatic functions. Get it here:

security.kolla.de/

or get it here

www.safer-networking.org

PM me if it finds critical files it wants to delete.

6. Install CWShredder 2.12 from Intermute and run it. Excellent program that will find problems that AdAware and SpyBot will not. Get it here:

http://www.intermute.com/spysubtract/cwshredder_download.html

Download the standalone version and run it.

6a. Do you use a c:\windows\HOSTS ad block file? If so save a copy of it before you run CWShredder.

7. Ad-Aware/Spybot/CWShredder – Keep them up-to-date and use all 3 frequently.

7a. What version of Lavasoft’s AdAware are you running? Does it have the most recent “definitions” update?

8. Download and install 12 Ghosts Wash. This is a great program to keep your computer cleaned out, and much better than the standard Windows programs. Also one button does everything for you. Get it here.

http://www.12ghosts.com/ghosts/wash.htm

9. After you have done all this stuff, (I know it is a lot), restart your PC, and defrag your hard-disk again.

If you still have problems, PM me. There are a couple of more things to do, if this does not fix you up....TB

Don't worry about it. Everybody gets a bug once and a while if you do a lot of WWW surfing, particularly certain types of sites. Problem is getting worse on a daily basis on the net.

Yes, but do not clean out the c:\windows\TEMP folder, or you will be sorry, depending on what software applications you are running. A lot of them install critical files to the TEMP Folder, due to stupid programmers. Hell even Windows Office platform does this.

Very good advice.

It literally takes a stack of six programs to keep the business box clean here, with four of those scheduled to run daily automatically.

That is life in these United States online today, unfortunately.

Even with that, as Pojo mentioned, there is some nasty ones out there that can get in still. We had a medium threat sneak in last week that I had to cut out by hand, in fact. Wasted the better part of a days work...

No kidding dude.

The security problems on the WWW are really starting to get very old.

Crap what it takes to protect a personal PC is getting to be crazy, much less a business box.

Of course, that's what pays my bills, so I cannot really complain.
