EVH always states that Dave's voice(especially these years) effects the brown sound. What does this all mean?....I say yes dave can!!

Godfather...once again, nice Thread topic. Ed has said Dave couldnt sing the classics anymore, his voice was gone...Whatever. I am listening to the Rama show boot as I type, Dave is the ONLY member of VH, who can still bring the classics to us, in the purest form!

I agree. Dave sounds much better now than he did during the 90's. Apparently the band did several takes on CGTSNM and MWM, mainly because Dave couldn't hit the highs. But after Nov 4th, in Casino Rama (which I can say that I proudly didn't miss out on) his voice was spectacular. When Ed and the rest of the band put Dave down, they dont realise that they grew older just as Dave has. Mike was never a really good bass player. Alex's health has always been questionable and Ed's playing has slowed down consideribly as well.
All memebers of the group has changed in one way or another. Dave for the better in my view, Ed and co. need to take a long hard look in the mirror.

I didn't know you were there? Fuck I was toasted going into that show. Had me 3 double shots of Jack, and 4 beers before the show and a few beers after with Moose and his friends and then a few more with Guwapo. Next time the drinks are on me!

Dude...I was hanging with Guwapo! I was 3/4 deep into a bottle of Jack and we get this waiter " I'm sorry, 1 drink per hour!" WTF? So, we got the drink limit thing at the Sportsbar and went to the Firestarter bar in the lobby. Lucky move, thats where we partied with the band after the show! I probably missed you by 2 feet and didnt know it!

anyway...the show frikkin rocked!

So true, Big Ragu!! I saw Dave last year here in NYC, and the classics were awesome. Dave sounded GREAT. Not just good, but GREAT. Ed saying Dave can't sing just goes to show how much Ed drinks.

Right on Man! Ed will realise SOON, that he and his brother are the problem, it has nothing to do with Dave!

I think the brown sound of today, is Gay Hagar poetry contest at Hitchworld1969.com.

Why would Eddie care? He hasn't had that tone in 15 years anyway.

thats prob why Ed cares so much. he cant get a good sound with Hagar. I believe he tunes way up when Sam sings and down for Dave.
He knows that fans want that "brownsound" so he uses the tired "Dave cant sing" story to justify why he plays the garbage he plays now. Total denial is what Edward lives in. No wonder he's a drunk.

Call me crazy, but I'm pretty sure Ed could produce the "sound" anytime he wanted.

It's all about putting space, empty bottles, and a gut-full of bitterness between himself and anything "Roth-era" oriented.

Thrift store cargo pants and furniture grade geetars are a far cry from overalls that match a Kramer as well.

I agree with Rustoffa, Ed can produce that sound "ANYTIME" he wants.
And to answer this ?, Dave can handle anything, when he puts his mind to it. Yes I do believe that he can "HANDLE" the brown sound. Just listen to the Rama boot. All yer questions will be answered.
Cheers

thats what I thought. Mike was the most replaceable guy in the group. In fact didn't Edward do all the bass work for VH3??? Im not saying he never had his moments playing some stellar songs, but bass alone, he was nothing more than a 4th member to an already great group. Don't believe me? Sit thru his 10 min bass solo from any of the boots. I'll wake ya when it's over. :D

They tuned down for this tour because Sambo can't screach the high notes anymore, either. The more I read the more I realize these guys are a bunch of pathological liars.

How about EVERY SONG !?!

Michael Anthony was just as much a part of the Van Halen sound as any other member...

..and without Anthony's voice the classic Van Halen harmony would be non-existant...

I'm guessing you're deaf...

Beer Drinkers and Hell Raisers, is a good boot to listen to if you wanna hear Mike sing. LOL But your partialy right... I lost "some" of my hearing after the 20 years of ol' Mike screeching.

Mike was NOT an equal part of VH. Not in my opinion. Any good Bass player could have done the same thing. Dave, Ed and even Al stick out more than mike did or does.

You said every song?

first 2 albums were great bass albums. Again though, any good bass player could do what Mike did.
WACF was Ed's album. Same with FW, it was all Dave and Ed. 1984 and DD? Your going to tell me that those two albums wouldn't have been the same without Mike playing Bass? You dont think any pro bass player could have done those albums?

I dunno. I do like his bass playin' but to me, he was always "just there". Some songs he did so very well. Like SGMAD and Outta Love Again were great. Im not saying he sucked. Im saying he was "replaceable". I would say the other 3 were not replaceable though. :D

Hendrix is great in moderation, but we are talking about a 4 piece band that claims equal recognition, not Jimi and the back up band. :D Now you got me in the mood for some Hendrix.

You guys both make a valid argument. Mikes bass licks were nothing special, and he probably could have easily been "replaced". But, his vocals are key to the classic sound and without it...well....It ain't Van Halen without Mike Anthony!

I may be wrong, but I heard Ed did some of the bass parts himself in the golden greats. Anyway, do you think Anthony really did the bass tapping on "You're no good" for instance? I really don't.
Yet, he was perfect in his place back in the gilden years as a bassist and mate (it seems so at least). But his damn too shrill screams make me cringe on the boots I've collected for years. Sure the only detail that doesn't fit, to me. But big Mike fitted perfectly in all other aspects.:smoke2:

I prob wouldn't be able to tell the difference in all honesty. Im not a big Ozzy fan. (Dio was a better frontman for Sabbath too!) :D

Dave is the only one out of the 4 who could deliver right now. EVH is in no condition to hang with the Diamond One. Check out the 4th of july footage. DLR has got his game back, unlike the alcoholic sisters.

Ed's 'Brown Sound' has been true to it's namesake on record since 1984: comes across like shit. His live tone may still be listenable, but his recorded sound post-Roth just sucks. Think it has to do more with Ed handling production and engineering chores, regardless of who got the credit on the Van Hagar albums.

Dave's got a unique voice and style which I dig, but the man was never Pavarotti [sic (?) ]. From everything I've seen and heard since 1999, Roth is more than capable of serving up the classics, and knocking them right out of the park. Might have difficulties with the screams on the verse-ends of something like 'Outta Love Again', but doubt I'd be splitting hairs that much if they got back together. Shit, Ed was flubbing the rhythm parts to 'Running With The Devil' on one 2004 mpeg I saw on this site, so maybe it's not Dave we gotta be concerned with here.

This is exactly right,Ragoo.Mikey has always been a meat and potatoes bass player and he has never been anything but.Can anyone really imagine Van Halen backing vocals live w/o him?He is very distinct, for a refresher watch the live clip of HFT,he's THAT fucking important to the sound. His and Dave's voice mesh so well together that the 2 of them together sound like 3.

Still think he is a shiver looking for a spine to crawl up though:splooge:
