View Full Version : Ray Luzier is overrated

I have to get this off my chest. Ray Luzier is simply overrated. Don't get me wrong, I don't think he's bad, but he is overrated. He is very very average. I've met him several times and he is without a doubt one hell of a nice guy. I just think reviews saying he's as good as Alex are absurd. On the other hand, I've met Alex and he has the personality of a tree stump. Dave is the best front man and will make any band look sensational. I think Brian and Dave however are the primary members of this band. Brian today is as good as ed today.

Really.

Live sound is bad?

What are you basing this expert opinion on? Technique?, miking?, perhaps mixing? Or do you think he's just not tuning his heads properly? Equipment?

Gimme a break:p

Unless you've toured as his tech, you calling his live sound "bad" from whatever nose bleed cheap seat you caught him the one or two times is ridiculous.

I love critics.:D

YOU do a few tours of that caliber and come talk to me.

Actually, from what boots I've listened to and the shows I've attended, I believe he uses a triggered electronic drum sound...

Also, his snare sound is terrable...

If something like that has been wearing and tearing at ya, I'd say you're in pretty good shape.

Most people would have heavier stuff they wanted to "unload".....people asking for a bag for a pack of gum at the seven eleven, the way the steering wheel shimmys from side to side at a certain speed, how the hot plate on the coffee maker is too hot.....relevant shit like that.

Cuntsider yourself the zip-a-dee-doo-da, Bobby Mc Ferrin cock-sucking, carefree troll of the year.

I'd guess there's probably heavier stuff you need to get off your chest....namely overpaid homeless flistafucks depositing cleveland steamers like a concrete truck.

Considering all of those boots have been audience recordings, it's really hard to seperate the drum sound from the acoustics of the building when it comes down to the finer details.

I saw the DLR Band in 2001, 2002, and 2003, great seats at every show, and I would take Ray over Alex (post 1984) any time

In fact, if Dave could find a bass player who could duplicate Mikey's classic VH harmonies, the DLR Band would be a better Van Halen than Van Halen.

Man, I don't want to be mean with you but... Luzier is very good, you should ask a buddy drummer and he will give you a confirmation.

Remember that Ray Luzier doesn't need to show off.

I remember a common mistake I did until sometime ago. I was listening to the Police and Andy Summers' guitar playing. I said to myself "Well, Andy Summers is average at best, his part are very easy". But then, I got a boot recording which comprised the early punk song "The Fall Out", and he did a lightning fast solo. My jaw dropped. For the rest of the bootleg, all he did was the usual reggae simple shit. Moral is: don't judge the actual skills of a drummer by the song he's playing; even the most underrated musician can surprise you.

A live context brings about a whole different set of circumstances to it, not the least of which being the audience at a Dave show ALWAYS raises the volume and the BPM a bit. Ray responds to that. As does the band (which has two guitars as opposed to one), so the mission isn't to ape Alex, it's to represent the song, and the audience, and the band, etc. To play it as THAT moment demands.

Elvis you've seen and heard him live once? At an outside gig years ago?

Ray does a lot of subtle shit that you notice later not least his amazing ability to hit every backing vocal.

Your criticisms of him and Brian Young make me think you just want an exact identical copy of the original albums when you go to a show. What's the point in that?

Cheers!

I feel comparing AVH and Ray is a bit dumb. AVH was the man who was creating the original VH magic, and he did a grate job back then. Ray hasn't had the luck to be a part of a band that has been as successful commercially, but the same can be said of thousands of other amazing drummers around the world, some qualified on other areas of music that aren't commercially as popular as rock n' roll, hard rock.

That doesn't diminish his value or skills as a drummer, or as a franchise member of the DLR Band. I give him, and the fact that while he's displaying grate fill-ins and tricks, he's always having fun and smiling like it's not a big deal at all, full ten points.

Exactly!

I took a very experienced hyper critical drummer to a Roth gig last year and he was very impressed with Ray technically.

Actually I meant even when Ray is doing something else like a fill, he always somehow manages to swing his mike stand around just in time to make the backing vocal.

Much cooler than the Britney Spears style headset mikes that Bissonette used.

I found myself watching Ray quite a lot of the time at the last couple of gigs I went to.

Cheers!

We don't always play the same song tge same way every night, no matter how well known the tune is, for any number of reasons. But mostly beause by nature we're creative people.

What a crock of shit!
I've seen other threads about AVH being better than this guy or that guy....and i've yet to see a name put forward that I could agree with.
Recently it was Copeland...he's probably forgotten more about drumming then AVH knows!!
Saw Luzier last year....he's the same, just awesome, lots of sublteties in there, and very powerful.
Here's the thing....I'm a drummer ( of sorts !), classic VH are my all time favourite band...but I'm sorry AVH is not a great drummer....a solid down the line rock drummer, yes, but not Bruford or Peart or Copeland or Bissonette. Just look at his godamn solos for fucks sake!

roth has always put together the worst possible bands he could! steve vai was a piss poor excuse to replace eddie van halen! nobody could ever replace edward! and that's exactly what david tried to do. edwards STILL on top, and even if you don't believe it, you will when van halen and sammy release their next album and it converts all of you. every time sammy puts out an album with van halen, more and more roth fans come over to our side. its easy to figure out why, too, because sammy and van halen release albums with really good songs that are easy to rock out to (check out it's about time, that song was the shiznit!) - davids stuff is just weak cuz he's got no talent at all.

before my work is finished, everybody on this board will agree with me.

keep copy and pasting, knock yourself out. i've already established the truth beyond any reasonable point, anything else you have to say about its just sour grapes on your part.
