Yallo to all. I don't post much since I spend enough time reading the forums to actually post something myself. Sometimes I even waste 1 whole hour that month!!! :p But something that always bothered me are the Sammy's defenders - sheep, you now call them - that come to this forum, knowing full well that it is only inhabited by the hostile Dave faction, to say "Sammy's better than Dave". And that's it... WHY is Sammy better than Dave? The time has come to make a detailed analysis on who's better at what, and then sum it up to see who's best.

Let's start with the obvious - who sings better. Many sheep say Sammy is a better singer. Well, I'll give you that. Sammy IS a better singer. He has more technique and a wider range, thus hitting many notes Dave probably couldn't.

Dave - 0 Sammy - 1

Live singing - Here, dave would get another bashing, since he can't seem to hit a note right live. However, he's never done playback either. Sammy has his own faults, too. By refusing to play Dave-era classics, he's not letting long time fans enjoy a proper VH concert, that is to say one with all the songs the fans like. He claims he doesn't like them, but to me the truth is he can't sing them as good as Dave. How, if he sings better? This is a natural phenomena. Look at Bruce Dickinson, for example. Easily one of the best voices around, and he can't sing any Paul Di'Anno songs properly. Sure, he's in key, but they don't sound half as good. But he DOES sing them, because he knows fans like them. Out of disrespect for his fans, Sammy gets flunked in this one.

Dave - 1 Sammy - 1

Stage presence. Since they're both frontmen, this also counts, obviously. You know I'm trying to say something good about Sammy here, but I just can't. This comparison isn't fair. Dave just wins, hands down!

Dave - 2 Sammy - 1

Van Halen years. Who has given more to Van Halen? Sammy was in 'For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge', a decent Van Halen album. It was the first time I listened to VH, and I must say I was impressed. However, I listened to other albums like 5150 and Balance, and suddenly I wasn't that impressed. This was BEFORE I listened anything Dave era!
Dave has given Van Halen 'Panama', 'Runnin' With The Devil', 'Little Guitars', 'Jump', 'Ice Cream Man', 'And The Cradle Will Rock', 'Hear About it Later', 'Unchained' and of course 'Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love', among many others.
Most important, I haven't listened to any decent guitar sound in the Sammy era, apart from the FUCK album. And VH is nothing without the guitar, even you sheep must admit it.

Dave - 3 Sammy - 1

Solo careers. This is also important, since it is where the man is most defined as the artist he truly is. Dave continued, at first anyway, what he was doing with VH, later expanding into other hard rock venues with more or less success. Although he didn't give any real contribution to Music in this era, one cannot say that his career wasn't, at least, interesting.
Sammy's career was similar to Dave's in that he didn't get that much attention for it - Dave did only in the beginning, and only because he was still hot from VH. Quite frankly, I didn't hear any of his solo albums, as I'm quite disinterested of it, but I listened to him play 'Hound Dog' on the the guitar on an Elvis tribute concert, and it wasn't half bad. Plus, I listened to him sing a few lines on Meat Loaf's 'Welcome To The Neighbourhood' album and it was good, too. Add this to the fact that Alice Cooper seems to respect him, and I'm going to tie them both. 1 point for each!

Dave - 4 Sammy - 2

Numbers. Despite Sammy's statements that his albums outsold Classic Van Halen, "looking at studio albums by lead singer, Van Halen with David Lee Roth sold 34 million albums. With Sammy Hagar they have sold 16 million and with Gary Cherone, 500,000."

Dave - 5 Sammy - 2

So, to sum it up, Sammy wins one and ties one, while Dave wins four and ties one. Guess Dave wins (again) but at least now the sheep know why.

I'll come over every now and then to read the replies (if any) but don't bother flaming me, as I won't reply to that kind of thing, unless it's REALLY funny. ;)

Thank you for your time,
Good night.

Sammy has more technique and a wider range than Roth, therefore is a better singer?

No.

Sammy has a mid-range that he's comfortable in. No bottom-end to his voice. Roth hit higher octaves when screaming, nearly reaching soprano notes at times.

Roth is a natural baritone equally adept in the bass range who can also scream in an alto-soprano range. Hagar is a tenor who can hit high altos.

Happy to clear that up for you.

Huh? I'll lay it straight in one sentence: Dave Rules, Hagar Drools.

Thank you.

That must have been obvious to you when you wrote " Take Your Whiskey Home " back in '74 huh, Joe?

or when you were deciding which songs were to appear or Diver Down.

Could you tell us more about writing songs with VH at age 12?

We'd all love to hear it.

Ok then, I'll stand corrected...

Ya, I just don't want to diminish any part of the Van Halen legacy. Sure I may have been the master mind who chose the songs on Diver Down along with writing Take Your Whisky Home, Hammerhead Shark (solo) and co-wrote of course Romeo Delight. However it is important to know I did not play any instrument or sing any lyric (aside from backrounds for Cradle Will Rock and Little Dreamer). Dave deserves the bulk of the credit. Myself, the band where a part of it, sure, but Dave is who we should commend for the most part. He provided the atmoshere and the attitude for the rest of us to be successfull. That is why I dedicate myself to this site. Thank you.

The only songs I ever wrote were Hammerhead Shark and Take Your Whisky Home. I was on song selection committee for the Diver Down record as well. I am not having a Q @ A session at this time though.

LM is right, you said you wrote "Whiskey" and selcted and helped produce Diver Down.

Yeah, a dipshit who signs up with a hundred user names, posts the same dumb, ignorant shit, and has been banned 5 times writes DLR/VH tunes.

You betcha.

If I put aside:

- The non stage presence Sammy has
- The obesity
- The inability to write a meaningful lyric to save his life
- The shameless flogging of tequila

I simply cant stand his voice. To me its like that annoying feeling
when someone scratches their nails on a chalkboard,
"Higher and Higher" AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

STOP PLEASE HELP ME !!!

Or when you are trying to sleep and two cats are making those
weird fighting/fucking noises...
Or when a mosquito buzzes around your ears while you try and
sleep.

Hagar's voice does that to me..

Anyone but Spammy !!

THe bigger mystery to me is how there are some Americans that
like him ??? Is that like the chunky ones that can relate to him ??
Here in Australia (and I believe the rest of the world) Spammy is
a total unknown.

Whereas everyone knows DLR. His post Van Halen material was
a huge hit in Oz, and the rest of the world...

If it cant be Dave, please Ed, get someone with some balls.
You already got Mikey to cover the Vagina section..

I've never met anybody who liked Van Hagar better than classic VH, or thought that Sam was a better singer than Dave.

Most fans just love guitar rock, especially when Eddie is playing, and don't get too involved in the soap opera behind the scenes. I don't hold out any hope that they can get back together, so I just listen to the CD's that were made.

I have read the posts of a bunch of groupies who, at the mere mention of Hagar, start gurgling Dave's cum and froth it at the mouth.

I'm so sick of reading this higher range shit...range means not the level you screech in moving between three half-tones like a eunuch on speed...

you wanna hear technique, feeling and range? just listen to one line...one line...

dance the night away (third line):

"And I feel her from across the room..."

dave sings, suddenly screams and turns the line down with a laughter under his singing...sam could never...NEVER...sing a line this way...

and that's what singing is about...giving a line all the feeling, all the attitude, style and CLASS !!!

now shut the fuck up...

Dave has always and will be a better singer, performer than Sammy.

Dave's voice is so golden and sweet, while Sammy's voice is too rough. Dave brings humor and martial arts on stage, while Sammy just stands on stage and make a ass of himself.

I have to Say Dave hands down.

During the Van Hagar reunion, Sammy tried singing classic Van Halen and totally fucked up the lyrics and voice range of the songs.

Well to be fair, Hagar does bring twinkies and tequila to the stage also. This is the actual alternate cover for BALANCE in fact.
