I like Deep Purple. I have a few albums, most notably, "In Rock", "Machine Head", "Made In Japan", and "Burn". I know the classic Purple is Mark II, though I really like Burn as well. What do you think?

BURN is a fantastic album. It's as good as any of the MARK II albums, as far as I'm concerned. STORMBRINGER (the other MARK III album), however, is not nearly as good as the other Purple albums, although the title cut is a classic. COME TASTE THE BAND (the Tommy Bolin album) is actually quite good. That was an under-rated line-up, and Bolin was a helluva player (died of a heroin overdose in 1976). You ever heard GETTIN' TIGHTER?

Of their newer stuff, it's a bit sketchier. I like the PERFECT STRANGERS album and some of the other newer MARK II songs (from the HOUSE OF BLUE LIGHT and BATTLE RAGES ON albums). But I really don't like Steve Morse. I can't stand his playing with Purple. The material just doesn't add up...although PURPENDICULAR has a few good songs (I'M NOT YOUR LOVER NOW). I saw them live over the summer, and they were fantastic. But I'm pretty much a Blackmore loyalist...though I also think Ian Gillan is "the man".

Wow, I post some killer Deep Purple vintage vids in Bootleg corner and this thread pops up. Cool.

Hey Rikk, if you have a broadband connection and a computer with balls, check out the live video I posted in Bootleg Corner of Purple performing Burn in 1974 at the California jam. Killer video/great quality.

I'll give Coverdale credit for "Burn", which I actually enjoyed as an album, though preferred the Gillian albums to it. I know Coverversion has done some cheesey stuff, but I have to give him credit for that one album.

I didn't have a problem with Coverdale, but yes second string.

Also, I have tremendous respect for Tommy Bolin's (RIP) work, but to me Deep Purple wasn't DP without Ritchie Blackmore, even though NO ONE could get along with the guy.

I remember reading how the band was out eating at this nice eatery, one night, and Blackmore got pissed off about something, per usual, and picked up this big piece of fish off his plate and threw it right in Lord's face. The whole band was told to leave the establish.

To this day, I have never seen a poll where Blackmore is not #1 for the musician with the worst attitude.

Here's a pic of Ritchie and DP in 1973

Of course we are talking the Ritchie Blackmore of old before he went crazy over the hot blond in these videos (Candice) and got into all that Celtic and Renaissance music, starting his new band with Candice, "Blackmore Nights".......Shiteeee

I hope that is really good p-tang he is getting. Man-o-man.

Here we go, Blackmore Nights - Live

Tell ya, somewhere along the way Candice did way too much bad acid and fried her tiny brain. Guess she must be good yum.

Here's two more small video clips of Ritchie and Candice. peeuuuu

Bad attitude or not, BLACKMORE was DEEP PURPLE more than anyone else was. That's why I think the current line-up is a bit false.

The hatred between GILLAN and BLACKMORE was half the band.

No question about it.

Hey, I have too live videos of DP doing Hush. Both high quality. One is '68 at the Playboy Club and the other '71 in concert. Man, the keyboards are awesome on that song! Still love the ol' Hammond-B3 sound, piped through Leslie speakers with the spin cones.

Ritchie was born that way. Probably why he does ludes and lives the Celtic way with Candice now. It's his way of avoiding the world, and everything he hates about it.

Ritchie is awesome. And frankly, in the recent (and excellent) CLASSIC ALBUMS DVD on MACHINE HEAD, Ritchie comes off a lot more positive towards Ian than the other way around. I think Ritchie is awesome and should be allowed to be a bit of a prick considering the immense talent he possesses.

I've grew up with Deep Purple, and I can't stand them now. But I also grew up with Queen and I f'ing love that band. Go figure about 'music your parents told you to listen to' sindrome.

Purples wrote some classic rock songs, but to me they are annoying as hell (mostly because of Blackmore). If I want to listen to Gillan - I'd listen to original JCS.

For me, the music my mother liked was lame-ass soft rock. Some of which I have grown to like, but a lot of which makes me cringe to this day.

Rikk
02-06-2005, 12:55 PM
Yeah, my parents never listened to anything like DEEP PURPLE or QUEEN or anything. Hell, they listened to jazz and classical. The only rock artists they ever listened to were THE BEATLES and ELVIS, and I love both of those artists. But even though I wasn't alive when DEEP PURPLE was at its peak, my mom would think that stuff was "too loud".

I am looking for vintage photos of the inside of Deep Purple’s tour jet in the late 60’s – early 70’s. It’s been years since I have seen them, but the inside of their big ass jet was awesome. A real psychedelic pussy pad, that made Jimi Hendrix jealous.

Yes, he's apparently quite nice about the idea. But Gillan thinks the band is so great with Morse. Frankly, they're treading water. Not one song they've written with Morse has been a classic...the albums are just complete filler. At least they were coming up with great tracks like PERFECT STRANGERS, THE BATTLE RAGES ON when they had Blackmore.

I don't think MARK II will ever get back together. Plus, LORD doesn't want to be in the band either.

Sucks. I still think Morse was the wrong choice...and Purple is Blackmore more than anyone else anyway. I really enjoyed the show I saw this summer...but I never forgot I was seeing Morse/Airey...not Blackmore/Lord.

tomballin
02-07-2005, 12:38 AM
Ok, my turn on Morse.

Steve Morse is a brilliant guitarist, but my problem with the guy is he as no tone or phrasing on his leads. IMO, this keeps him from ever being an elite master guitarist. If he would get some tone and phrasing like some of the other greats, Blackmore could stay home and suck on Candice and ludes, or whatever.

FYI Ritchie will be 60 this year. All these guyes are up in their years, for the lifestyle. Gotta remember that DP is a decade older than VH.

I thought DP with Morse on Tour was great. The closest overall sound I have heard since early 70's DP, except Morris was trashing and bulldogging throught Blackmore's well crafted leads, and I hated his sound on most of his solos.

That's my 3 cents

PS: Agree with everything you said Rikk, ......where's the beef.

Saw this while doing some research digging:

"California Jam" 1974 and "Live In Denmark" 1972 will be released on DVD. T2, who produce the DVD's, were planing to release them, but now the DVD's will be released on EMI in Europe and Australia, on VAP in Japan and Eagle/Spitfire in America. Both DVD's are planed to be released in February 2005.

"The California Jam" DVD will include "Lay Down Stay Down" (which wasn't included on the old video release), picture gallery, alternate angles on some tracks etc.

"Live In Denmark" DVD has now been expand and will now include New York Hofstra University 1973 footage (cut's from this appeared on the Machine Head DVD). The Hofstra footage is around 25 min (all that survives). "Live In Denmark" DVD will also be the first release in a projected series of Deep Purple archive releases, "The Deep Purple DVD Collection 68/76 Volume One".

Yup. It takes Zeppelin 25 years to finally come out with a great vault release. Lord knows the demand is there for more.

But Purple have been throwing great DVDs (or vids) and CDs at fans for years, even though the releases contained earlier line-ups.

It just proves not only that they are legendary but that they also don't feel like fucking over their fans or ignoring their history (VAN HALEN sucks).

Led Zep and Deep Purple had this "arms race" going as to who could be the coolest rockstars and spend the most money. From accounts, Deep Purple didn't have a dime left from their classic days together.

The good part about RB doing all that Celtic music stuff is at least the guy hasn't stopped playing a guitar, like many of the past do.

PS: Blackmore and the boys did a lot of wild stuff in their day, but nothing beats the infamous Led Zep mud fish story, with that chick, that Carmine Appice and others tell. Wuoooo

The guy is just unbelievable/on fire cranking out the "best of" DP's material. I think it's one of the best I have ever seen the guy play.

Great quality A+ pro-shot video, but I have no idea the venue or the date. Will have to do some research on this gem. The video is huge, but thought for now, I could clip out some of the awesome Blackmore moments and post it in the DP thread in the Bootleg Corner.

I like Deep Purple. I have a few albums, most notably, "In Rock", "Machine Head", "Made In Japan", and "Burn". I know the classic Purple is Mark II, though I really like Burn as well. What do you think?

Smoke has gone down and vanished on the Lake, but Purple is still burning like hell.
Morse (means "walrus" in French, arf! arf!) is great on his own music, I think. But if Blackmore is out for good, then why not him on guitar?
They come to play in Switzerland now and then. They played the... Montreux Festival last summer! A Purple fan great pal of mine who's interviewed them 3 or 4 times was there, told me it was tremendous. Yep! Around $100 per ticket, no way for me, I'm not crazy for DP bits and pieces...

I first bought "Perfect Strangers", which I still love listening. Then I bought everything made by "mark II". Don't wanna hear about Coverdale or Dio, except under their own names, but then I've got none of their records.

"Bananas" is simply grotesque, I think.

I wonder what's the reason I can view the files but not download them?

I've tried...

Thank you anyway...great quality clips, and "You keep on moving" is still one of my all time favorite music tracks...

I think the 'Burn' album is as good as anything Purple have ever done. I do think it is unfair the way people refuse to listen to something because of a slight line up change.

BLACK SABBATH'S 'Heaven + Hell' (Dio's 1st) is one of my favourite Sabbath album.

YES' 'Drama' (the one with BUGGLES) is a strong enough album.

'Emerson Lake And Powell' (ELP with Cozy) isn't as bad as the critics say.

VAN HALEN's '5150'...no actually, you're right about that one.

My point is that good music is good music. The only thing I object to is when they call themselves Black Sabbath/Yes/Van Halen/Deep Purple when a key member leaves. I wouldn't mind if it was just the drmmer, because they ain't that important for musical imput (sorry, drummers). I mean, how can you be called Yes when Jon Anderson isn't doing the singing?

Ah yes-but, Neil Peart wasn't even on Rush's excellent debut album.

And anyway, there are always some exceptions. And besides, if Yes can replace Bill Bruford, then near enough any drummer can be replaced.

Yes even replaced Rick Wakeman...

The only person Yes haven't replaced at some point is bassist Chris Squire, unless you include the Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman and Howe project (which were more Yes than Yes at that point).
