The Rage Against the Machine thread that was started got me thinking about how great thier debut album was.....

What are some other bands that had great debut albums?

I'll get the list started:

Van Halen-I(no shit!)
Led Zeppelin-I
Rage Against The Machine
Stone Temple Pilots-Plush
Black Sabbath-Black Sabbath
Godsmack-Godsmack

DLR7884
Supergroups (Audioslave, Velvet Revolver, etc) don't count....it has to be the first album that the artists appeared on.

Kill 'Em All was pretty fab. Not half the album Lightning or Puppets were, but still great.

In the same vein, the first Radiohead album is actually pretty good as well. They just hadn't quite found their way yet.

Never mind the butchery of Atlantic Records. "Jailbreak" was released in 1976 on Ac/Dc's third album "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap" - but not on the American version - which wasn't released until 1981 anyway.

Their debut album was indeed named "High Voltage", but it's probably a much different record than the one you are used to.

http://www.buoy.com/~bonfire/hvaus.jpg

http://www.buoy.com/~bonfire/Image16.gif

Track listing:
Baby Please Don't Go
She's Got Balls
Little Lover
Stick Around
Soul Stripper
You Ain't Got A Hold On Me
Love Song
Show Business

Only 2 of these songs made it on to the American "High Voltage". Some of the others did finally make it to the "Jailbreak" EP, largely due to the popularity of the songs "Jailbreak" and "Soul Stripper" which were often requested at FM rock stations in the pre-corporatist era of rock radio.

I love Wilco, but A.M. doesn't do much for me.

Not really an indication of where they were heading either. (Summer teeth is my favorite, with YHF a close second)

Still, always happy to see them mentioned!

I have Nirvana's Bleach album in the car. Got into it again recently. Seriously heavy riffs there almost on the verge of being thrash metal.

'Negative Creep' is a classic riff. Vai and Satriani as amazing as they are could never play a riff that heavy.

Down - NOLA

A true American hard rock band in every sense of the word featuring members of Pantera, Corrosion of Conformity, Eyehategod, and Crowbar. Their first album is definitely a must for the harder-core stoner-rocker! The damn thing sold roughly about half a million copies with nearly no promotion from the record company and only about 2 weeks worth of touring in the states alone. Just a great debut album.
