Making sense of teams' dollars

A look at all 32 teams' salary cap status, based on a projected 2005 cap of $85 million:

Arizona: Has money to be a major free-agent player.

Atlanta: Waiting to decide how to prorate Michael Vick's bonus.

Baltimore: In its best cap shape since 1996.

Buffalo: Positioned well to re-sign key players, pursue other veterans.

Carolina: Releasing Muhsin Muhammad would free $10.2 million.

Chicago: Has ample cap room and could create more if needed.

Cincinnati: Already budgeted all but $2 million of its cap space.

Cleveland: Dumping Jeff Garcia will put the Browns $9.5 million under the cap.

Dallas: Plenty of ammo ($20 million) for the free-agent market.

Denver: Scrambling to find the money to actively pursue free agents.

Detroit: $23 million in cap space, but lots of players to re-sign.

Green Bay: Little room to maneuver on the market.

Houston: Has about $5 million in space but won't be active in the market.

Indianapolis: $20 million cap cushion will disappear quickly.

Jacksonville: Plans to put its sizeable cap surplus to good use.

Kansas City: Should rectify its cap deficit relatively painlessly.

Miami: Cuts will put it under the cap but won't leave spending money.

Minnesota: Has as much cap space as any team in the league.

New England: After bloated contracts are trimmed, Pats will have room to maneuver.

New Orleans: Expected to be $4 million under but could easily free more cash.

N.Y. Giants: Should have more cap flexibility than in recent years.

N.Y. Jets: Anticipated $9 million in cap space when the free-agent period begins.

Oakland: In fine shape; will have more space if Rich Gannon's deal is adjusted.

Philadelphia: Will have about $8 million available for free agents.

Pittsburgh: Continues to sit right up against the cap.

St. Louis: Will have room to make a couple of moderate to large free-agent strikes.

San Diego: After tagging Drew Brees, will have $13 million to spend.

San Francisco: Poised to be a stronger market force with $20 million available.

Seattle: With plenty of players to re-sign, its available $22 million will go fast.

Tampa Bay: Needs to restructure contracts, make cuts to combat $14 million cap hole.

Tennessee: With a $27 million cap deficit, cuts are imminent.

Washington : Could make a few waves with $4 million in cap room.

Seahawks: Hasselbeck chosen over Alexander

by Fanball Staff - Fanball.com

Tuesday, February 22, 2005

News

If the Seahawks can't sign either quarterback Matt Hasselbeck or running back Shaun Alexander, the team will place their franchise tag on Hasselbeck, reports the Tacoma News-Tribune. The report states that the Seahawks have already told Hasselbeck that he would be designated as their franchise player if a long-term deal can't be worked out by Tuesday's deadline. That move would give him a one-year deal worth $8.078 million, the average of the five highest-paid quarterbacks in 2004. The newspaper is also reporting that Seattle is not aggressively trying to re-sign Alexander and he will likely depart via free agency.

Views

If the Seahawks can't agree to a multi-year deal with Hasselbeck, he will eat up roughly one-third of their available cap space. Seattle would be wise to come to an agreement with their balding signal caller so they can slap the franchise tag on Alexander, which would cost them $6.3 million. Being able to use the tag on Shaun would allow the Seahawks to keep offensive tackle Walter Jones, Hasselback, and Alexander, their biggest three free agents of this offseason.

Packers designate Franks as transition player

February 21, 2005
GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) -- The Green Bay Packers designated three-time Pro Bowl tight end Bubba Franks as their transition player on Monday.

The Packers can try to negotiate a long-term deal with Franks. Until a deal is reached, Franks will receive a one-year contract at a tender rate set by the NFL for tight ends.

The Packers will have right of first refusal to match any offer Franks receives.

Franks, Green Bay's top pick in the 2000 draft, is tied with Mark Chmura for third place in franchise history for career receptions with 188.

Titans cut WR Mason, CB Rolle, DT Carter

February 21, 2005

NASHVILLE, Tennessee (Ticker) - More than $25 million over the salary cap, the Tennessee Titans made some painful cuts.

Three former Pro Bowlers - receiver Derrick Mason, cornerback Samari Rolle and defensive tackle Kevin Carter - were among the players released by the Titans on Monday.

"A difficult day for us, a difficult day for the players," Titans coach Jeff Fisher said at an afternoon news conference. "It's a day that we knew was coming. It's not an easy day because each of these guys can play at a high level."

Right tackle Fred Miller, fullback Robert Holcombe and kicker Joe Nedney were also cut by the Titans, who finished in last place in the AFC South last season with a 5-11 record.

Numerous players had to be released by the Titans before March 2, when the free agency period begins.

"We are roughly $27 or $28 million over the cap and we wanted to take all the hits now instead of accelerating them into the future," Titans general manager Floyd Reese said.

Mason, 31, was the first player in franchise history to record four straight 1,000-yard seasons, including a career-high 96 catches for 1,168 yards and seven touchdowns in 2004. But Mason has a cap figure of $6.65 million in 2005.

Rolle, 28, is the team's best cover cornerback, but carries a cap price of $9.81 million in 2005. He was arrested on domestic assault charges last week.

Carter, 31, played both tackle and end and led the team with six sacks last season. But he has an outlandish cap number of $13.97 million for 2005.

Miller, 32, had a cap figure of $9.32 million in 2005.

A salary cap figure is not a player's base salary for the season, but rather a number that includes salary and various bonuses. Teams can still be charged for a player against the cap even after he is waived.

If the Titans waited until June to cut the players, they could have split the cap figure over two seasons.

"We wanted to clear it off now," Reese said. "By doing this now, we could go from being $25-30 million over the cap to $8 million under."

By making the cuts now, Tennessee can proceed to re-sign some of its restricted free agents - a group that is headlined by defensive end Carlos Hall, linebacker Rocky Calmus, safety Lamont Thompson and center Justin Hartwig.

"This allows us to tender all of our restricted free agents," Reese said.

Laveranues Coles: Likely to Be Released

RotoWire.com Staff - RotoWire.com

Monday, February 21, 2005

Update: Coles has had at least two extensive conversations with coach Joe Gibbs since the season ended which are expected to lead to his release from the team, the Washington Post reports.

Recommendation: Coles caught a career-best 90 passes last season, the third-most in franchise history behind Art Monk. Yet the five-year veteran became frustrated by the lack of a deep passing game. The Redskins finished with the 30th-ranked offense in the league last season, and Gibbs's ball-control philosophy coupled with a 6-10 record made Coles miserable. With relatively few quality free agent wide receivers available this offseason, Coles is likely to attract attention from a number of teams should he be released.

Matt Winkeljohn, of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, reports Atlanta Falcons QB Matt Schaub was acquitted Friday, Feb. 18, of an assault charge stemming from an incident at the University of Virginia campus last November. Schaub was initially arrested and charged with assault and battery last year after being identified as one of three men who assaulted a man on the school's campus.

Vikings | Past Troubles Could Haunt Fowler - from www.KFFL.com

The Baltimore Sun reports Reggie Fowler, the would-be owner of the Minnesota Vikings, will have his career and business dealings scrutinized by the NFL finance committee March 9 and 10. Citing the Minnesota Star Tribune, league officials will likely find Fowler or his businesses have been sued more than three dozen times in the Phoenix and Denver areas. Additionally, Fowler has borrowed heavily against several of his commercial properties and is the landlord of a business owner who was involved in a college basketball point-shaving scam many years ago. The league will also review Fowler's net worth to verify he is strong enough financially to provide stability as an NFL owner.

Seahawks | Hasselbeck First in Line for Franchise Tag - from www.KFFL.com
Mon, 21 Feb 2005 07:56:45 -0800

Mike Sando, of the Tacoma News Tribune, reports Seattle Seahawks QB Matt Hasselbeck is first in line to be tagged as the team's "franchise" player if the team is unable to work out a long-term deal with him before free agency begins. If they tagged him with the franchise label, it would be a one-year, $8.078 million contract. That, however, would wipe out about one-third of the team's salary cap space so working out a long-term deal would be more beneficial to Seattle.

Seahawks | Alexander Could Walk - from www.KFFL.com
Mon, 21 Feb 2005 07:56:05 -0800

Mike Sando, of the Tacoma News Tribune, reports Seattle Seahawks RB Shaun Alexander could hit the free agent market instead of being hit with the team's "franchise" tag because QB Matt Hasselbeck is first in line to have the tag placed on him. The Seahawks have not been aggressive in trying to re-sign Alexander and a deal before free agency begins appears unlikely. If the team is able to work out a long-term deal with Hasselbeck before the deadline, they could then turn around and use the franchise tag on Alexander.

NFC teams busy in free agency trying to catch Eagles

By DAVE GOLDBERG, AP Football Writer

March 3, 2005

NFC teams were busy trying to catch up with the Philadelphia Eagles on the second day of free agency.

Two of the conference champions' divisional rivals made big moves Thursday.

Dallas added defensive tackle Jason Ferguson from the New York Jets and guard Marco Rivera from Green Bay on Thursday after signing cornerback Anthony Henry on Wednesday. The New York Giants signed middle linebacker Antonio Pierce, who emerged as a top defender for Washington last season in his first year as a starter.

Dallas owner Jerry Jones called it ``the most expensive day in Cowboys history.'' The tab: $28 million in signing bonuses alone.

``I'll do what it takes to get us to the Super Bowl,'' Jones said. ``It's about winning.''

Carolina, the 2003 NFC champion, plunged into free agency like never before, signing guard Mike Wahle, cut by Green Bay for cap reasons, and former Seahawks cornerback Ken Lucas.

Pierce's departure to a division opponent smarted. Redskins coach Joe Gibbs had identified the 26-year-old linebacker as one of the ``core players'' he wanted to keep. But New York's offer of a six-year, $26 million deal was too much for the usually free-spending Redskins.

``We went as far as we could go, I felt like,'' Gibbs said. ``It's something that just didn't work out. I hate it. It's not going to happen very often to us, but there's times when it could happen.''

The Redskins did add one new player, agreeing to terms with free agent receiver David Patten, who caught 44 passes for 800 yards and seven touchdowns last season for the Super Bowl champion New England Patriots.

The Patriots got some help at cornerback, acquiring Duane Starks in a trade with Arizona. New England gave the Cardinals a third-round pick in April's draft.

It was a particularly bad day for Green Bay, which lost two starting guards and safety Bhawoh Jue, who signed a three-year contract with the San Diego Chargers.

The Eagles, meanwhile, kept one of their own, agreeing to a one-year deal with veteran defensive end Hugh Douglas.

While adding Pierce, the Giants cut former first-round pick Ike Hilliard, saying goodbye to the receiver after eight seasons.

San Francisco signed offensive lineman Jonas Jennings, formerly of the Buffalo Bills and regarded as the best left tackle available.

That position is normally at a premium, although Jennings isn't in the class of the NFL's best. Two of them, Orlando Pace of St. Louis and Walter Jones of Seattle, were kept off the market this year -- Jones re-signed with the Seahawks and Pace was protected as the Rams' franchise player.

The Rams added their second linebacker in two days, signing Chris Claiborne away from the Vikings to go along with Dexter Coakley, signed away from Dallas.

Claiborne got a three-year, $10.5 million contract a day after Coakley signed a five-year, $14.5 million deal.

Oakland signed running back Lamont Jordan, who had been Curtis Martin's backup with the Jets. Jordan, whose 479 yards rushing were more than the Raiders' leading rusher last season, got $11 million guaranteed in a contract that will pay him $27.5 million over five years.

Reggie Hayward was rewarded for being able to do what Jennings is getting paid to prevent -- rush the passer. He was introduced by Jacksonville after signing a five-year, $25 million deal.

Hayward led Denver last season with 10 1/2 sacks despite being only a part-time player at the start of the season. With Jacksonville, he will play alongside one of the NFL's best defensive tackle tandems: John Henderson and Marcus Stroud.

``He's an ascending player, and we believe his best football is ahead of him,'' coach Jack Del Rio said. ``With the presence we have inside with Marcus and Big John, we believe Reggie will help take our defense to another level.''

Houston signed linebacker Morlon Greenwood, who started for Miami, to a five year, $22.5 million deal, and re-signed defensive tackle Seth Payne, one of the players it chose in the expansion draft for its first season in 2002.

Denver re-signed guard Ben Hamilton and welcomed back linebacker Ian Gold, who played one season with Tampa Bay before returning to the Broncos as a free agent.

The agent for Pittsburgh receiver Plaxico Burress said he's had preliminary talks with the Minnesota Vikings about his client replacing Randy Moss.

``Plaxico's interested in being in Minnesota,'' Michael Harrison told The Associated Press. ``I think it is a good fit for both sides.''

Also on Thursday, free agent receiver Travis Taylor, a disappointment during his five seasons in Baltimore, visited the Vikings.

Kurt Warner made the Arizona Cardinals his first stop as a free agent and said he expects to win the starting quarterback job with whatever team signs him.

Warner, who lost his starting job with the New York Giants last season to rookie Eli Manning, also plans to visit the Chicago Bears on Friday and the Detroit Lions on Sunday. He expects to sign with one of those three teams.

Friday Free Agency Overview

Scout.com - Scout.com

March 5, 2005 at 1:33am ET

The third day of NFL free agency started off slow again, but as the day progressed it saw lots of twists and turns.

In the NFC East, the Eagles continued to bring back key members to their next version by inking middle linebacker Jeremiah Trotter to a five-year contract. Not only was Trotter a key to their improved run defense, he's one of their locker room leaders and one of the most respected players on their team. Trotter took a little less money to come back, which is interesting since he signed for the veteran minimum with no signing bonus last year. Trotter is now the third player to re-up with the club this week.

The Giants continued to address their need areas by inking free agent offensive tackle Kareem McKenzie to a multi-year deal. McKenzie should help bolster an offensive line that has struggled the past few seasons. He'll stay at right tackle, the same position he played for the Jets. They did lose key reserve defensive lineman Lance Legree to the Jets.

The NFC North was quiet once again on Friday with no signings but had some player visits. In fact, the only team that made a move was the Packers, who continued their salary-cap reduction and released cornerback Michael Hawthorne .

Turning our attention to the NFC South, all was quiet on Friday except for some player visits and a few minor yet important moves. The Buccaneers made a minor move by re-signing veteran tight end Dave Moore . They also got a new deal done with veteran defensive end Greg Spires . His cap number was too high for the 2005 season so the club approached him about getting him to sign a much friendlier cap number and an extension was completed.

The Panthers re-signed special teams ace and backup wide receiver Karl Hankton . He's a player that you won't hear much about but is a key to their special teams coverage.

In the NFC West, the Cardinals made a few moves and one that should prove to be a help to their offensive line. They re-signed backup running back Damien Anderson and released running back Larry Ned , who they claimed off of waivers from the Vikings earlier this week. More importantly, they signed free agent offensive tackle Oliver Ross to a multi-year deal Friday evening. Ross will take over the starting right tackle job with L.J. Shelton on the trading block. Ross started for the Steelers at that position last season.

None of the other teams signed any free agents. The Seattle Seahawks released two players, one of which was a starter, on Friday. Veteran safety Damien Robinson , who spent the entire 2004 season on injured reserve with a shoulder injury, and starting outside linebacker Anthony Simmons , who missed 21 games due to injury over the last three seasons, were let go. Both were due roster bonuses.

In the AFC, the Eastern division was busy on Friday.

The New York Jets lost some key players but made a few interesting moves. They signed Denver Broncos restricted free agent tight end Jeb Putzier to an offer sheet. The Broncos will have seven days to match the offer. If they choose not to, they would only get a sixth-round pick back as compensation so it would be a surprise if they wind up not matching it. They also signed former New York Giants defensive lineman Lance Legree to a multi-year deal. He can back up at end and tackle. They also re-signed little-used defensive tackle Alan Harper . The club did take it on the chin when they lost starting offensive tackle Kareem McKenzie to the team that plays their home games in the same stadium. They don't look to have anyone left on the roster who could replace him so they'll have to look to the draft or to the rest of free agency to find their new starting right tackle.

The New England Patriots were quiet on Friday but the Buffalo Bills made a few interesting moves.

The Bills inked former Chicago Bears offensive lineman Mike Gandy to a multi-year deal. He'll compete for the vacant starting left tackle spot but he can also play at guard if needed. They also signed former Cleveland Browns quarterback Kelly Holcomb . He wanted more money than the Browns wanted to pay so he looked elsewhere for employment. Interestingly, he passed up signing with the Browns, who would have given him a chance to start. With Buffalo, he'll back up second-year signal caller J.P. Losman .

The Miami Dolphins signed former Carolina Panthers safety Travares Tillman , who will likely compete for the starting free safety job which was vacated when the club released Arturo Freeman .

The AFC North saw plenty of movement by the Cleveland Browns while the other teams remained quiet.

The Browns started off early and signed former Cincinnati Bengals punter Kyle Richardson to a one-year deal. He was one of the better punters earlier in his career, especially with the Baltimore Ravens , but in recent years his play has fallen off. Later in the day, the rumors that circulated later in the afternoon became fact. In the early evening they surprisingly inked free agent cornerback Gary Baxter . Senior VP and General Manager Phil Savage pulled off a real coup with this one from his former employer. It was just last night that Baxter and his former team, the Ravens, looked to be close to a deal. In fact, sources say, he was expected to sign the deal Friday morning but never did. That started the rumor mill. By 7 p.m. EST, Baxter had agreed to a six-year deal with the Browns. He'll replace his predecessor Anthony Henry in the starting lineup. Like Henry, he's a big and physical cornerback.

Interestingly, when Scout.com was at the NFL Combine last week, we had a chance to talk to a Raven' assistant coach and we posed the question of who would replace Baxter if he signed elsewhere. The coach said, "you would" jokingly. What he meant was that they didn't have a replacement left on the roster so it's obvious now that they will have to turn to free agency or the NFL Draft.

Turning our attention to the AFC South, it was a pretty quiet day on Friday. The Texans were the only team to make any moves, albeit minor ones. They re-signed backup cornerback Jason Bell , who is a solid special teams player. They also re-upped with fullback Moran Norris who is essentially the starter at that position.

The Colts, Titans, and Jaguars didn't make any moves on Friday.

Finally, the AFC West was much quieter.

Drew Brees signed one-year franchise tender with the Chargers, giving him a salary of $8.078 million for the 2005 season. Brees signed the deal one day after returning from vacation in Australia.

"I was ready and eager to make it official," Brees said. "I am ecstatic. The fact that I get to be here another year and build on the foundation we set for ourselves."

The Chargers also re-signed starting free safety Jerry Wilson and backup center David Brant. Wilson will be challenged by safety Bhawoh Jue , who signed a three-year deal with the club on Thursday.

The Broncos, Raiders, and Chiefs all had quiet days on the signing front.

Dolphins sign DE Holliday to two-year contract

March 5, 2005
DAVIE, Fla. (AP) -- The Miami Dolphins signed defensive end Vonnie Holliday to a two-year contract Saturday.

Holliday was released by Kansas City on Feb. 22. The seven-year NFL veteran was with the Chiefs for two seasons.

He started three games last season and had nine tackles. He has played in 91 career games, with 220 tackles. He has also played for Green Bay.

Is it just me or does Holliday seem like he's a lot older than he is?

Does seem like he's been around for a while. I think he had a decent rookie year or second year, but that was it.

A bust basically.

Monday Free Agency Overview

Scout.com - Scout.com

March 15, 2005 at 3:00am ET

As we begin the third week of free agency, lets take a look at what developments took place over the weekend and through Monday.

In the NFC East, things slowed down to a crawl over the past four days. The Giants signed free agent defensive tackle Kendrick Clancy who will replace the recently released Norman Hand.

The Eagles were able to sign free agent quarterback Mike McMahon who will compete for the main backup job against veteran signal caller Koy Detmer. The club did lose a key player, though, over the weekend. Gone is starting defensive end Derrick Burgess to Oakland. Losing Burgess could hurt if veteran end N.D. Kalu hasn't regained his form before suffering a serious knee injury last year or former first-round pick Jerome McDougle doesn't pick up his play in a big way.

The NFC North was the busiest division over the weekend.

The Detroit Lions lost backup quarterback Mike McMahon, as noted above, but replaced him quickly be agreeing to a one-year deal with Jeff Garcia. He's a good fit for their offensive system and will be ready to play if called upon.

The Green Bay Packers continued their salary cap purge by releasing veteran free safety Darren Sharper because they didn't want to pay his roster bonus and they have yet to sign any free agents from other teams.

The Minnesota Vikings jumped on Sharper after he was released and signed him to a multi-year deal. Sharper should prove to be a big upgrade over Brian Russell who remains a restricted free agent. You have to like their secondary now with the addition of Sharper and cornerback Fred Smoot. Look for them to address their needs at linebacker later in free agency and in next month's NFL Draft.

Turning our attention to the NFC South, that division saw some minor moves take place.

The Atlanta Falcons were able to re-sign veteran cornerback Kevin Mathis and fullback Fred McCrary. Both were key players in the club's success late in the season. They followed that up by signing free agent guard Matt Lehr who will likely compete for a starting job.

The New Orleans Saints re-signed veteran cornerback Jason Craft who will compete for the nickel role.

In the NFC West, the Arizona Cardinals finally stayed out of the free agency fray over the weekend and the rest of the division was quiet as well.

Only the Seattle Seahawks made a few moves. They re-signed veteran offensive lineman Floyd Womack and free agent linebacker Kevin Bentley. The versatile Womack has a good chance to earn a starting job for the first time in his career. Bentley will compete for playing time, likely as a backup.

Turning our attention to the AFC, the Eastern division saw plenty of minor moves being made.

The Miami Dolphins re-signed backup quarterback Sage Rosenfels who will likely man the third spot on the depth chart since the club also reached a contract agreement with free agent Gus Frerotte. Frerotte will get a chance to challenge the incumbent starter A.J. Feeley. The also released veteran fullback Rob Konrad.

The Buffalo Bills released veteran safety Pierson Prioleau who was destined to be a backup this season and they also re-signed backup tight end Ryan Neufeld.

The New England Patriots signed returner/wide receiver Tim Dwight. The oft-injured player will mostly be used on special teams while seeing a few plays here and there as a receiver.

The New York Jets signed free agents linebacker Barry Gardner and quarterback Jay Fiedler. Gardner will serve as depth and will play on special teams. Fiedler will back up starting quarterback Chad Pennington. Fiedler's a nice signing when you consider his strong winning percentage as a starter.

Looking at the AFC North, the Cleveland Browns, as expected, released defensive end Courtney Brown rather than pay him a sizeable roster bonus. The club would like to re-sign him at a reasonable price. The club also signed free agent defensive tackle Jason Fisk, who is a decent run stopper.

The Baltimore Ravens signed former Pittsburgh Steelers guard Keydrick Vincent who looks to be penciled in for a starting job over Bennie Anderson who is an unrestricted free agent.

The Cincinnati Bengals made an important signing with the addition of veteran end/tackle Bryan Robinson who will take over a starting job vacated by Tony Williams who won't be re-signed.

Turning our attention to the AFC South, only one team made any moves over the weekend.

The Houston Texans released veterans inside linebacker Jay Foreman and safety Eric Brown. Foreman should be able to find a job once his surgically repaired ankle is totally healed. Foreman wasn't needed once the club signed free agent linebacker Morlon Greenwood.

Finally, the AFC West saw lots of moves take place.

The San Diego Chargers released veteran quarterback Doug Flutie rather than place him third on the depth chart.

The Chiefs added veteran safety Sammy Knight who is still one of the better players at his position. He'll add some badly needed play making ability to their underachieving secondary.

Finally, the Oakland Raiders added free agent defensive end Derrick Burgess. This move will enable the club to use Burgess at his more natural left end position and to move Tyler Brayton to outside linebacker.

Vikings: Taylor signs for No. 3 role

by Fanball Staff - Fanball.com
Tuesday, March 15, 2005

News
The Vikings have taken their first step toward addressing the gaping hole at wide receiver that was created by the Randy Moss trade. The team announced the signing of free agent Travis Taylor on Tuesday, according to the Star Tribune. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Taylor, who spent the last five years with the Ravens, missed six games last year due to an assortment of injuries. The No. 10 overall pick in the 2000 draft finished the season with 34 receptions for 421 yards and no touchdowns.

Views
Taylor won't make anyone forget Moss, nor do Vikings' officials expect him to. In fact, he won't even enter training camp as a starting receiver. The current plan is to feature him as the No. 3 wideout behind starters Nate Burleson and Marcus Robinson. Of course, there is a better chance of the original Beatles reuniting for a tour than there is of Robinson surviving a full season without injuries, so we expect Taylor to start at some point. The five-year veteran more or less recruited the Vikings during the offseason due to his desire to play with quarterback Daunte Culpepper.

Packers Release Darren Sharper, Sparky Hamilton

The Green Bay Packers Thursday terminated the contract of safety Darren Sharper and waived tight end Sparky Hamilton. Ted Thompson, Executive Vice President, General Manager and Director of Football Operations, made the announcement.

Sharper, 29, started at free safety the last six seasons. A 6-foot-2, 210-pound veteran out of William & Mary, he ranks fifth on the Packers' all-time interceptions list with 36 and in 2004 became one of four players to lead the team in interceptions at least five seasons, joining Bobby Dillon (seven), Willie Wood (five) and LeRoy Butler (five).

In 2004, Sharper played in 15 regular-season games, with 13 starts, and registered 77 tackles (68 solo). He snared four interceptions among eight passes defensed, forced two fumbles and recovered another. He also started the team's Wild Card playoff game vs. Minnesota.

The Packers' second-round selection in the 1997 NFL Draft, Sharper sustained a sprained left posterior cruciate ligament vs. Dallas (Oct. 24) and missed the following week's game at Washington (Oct. 31). Limited to passing situations vs. Minnesota (Nov. 14) and at Houston (Nov. 21), he returned to the lineup vs. St. Louis (Nov. 29).

Hamilton, 23, originally signed with the club Jan. 19 as a reserve/future free agent.

The Vikes quickly signed Sharper.

They also dealt for Sam Cowart from the Jets for a 7th round pick.

Vikes could be a better team overall next season, even without Moss.
