G'day Guys !

I swear, I thought I was going to get 0 winners this week !! LOL..
I was wondering if you get awarded the magic 7 points if you
can actually not pick one winner..

I think the Swans should have got up..

I have no idea where the Carlton football team was in that third
quarter, but if somebody finds out, can they please send an
urgent fax to Denis Pagan ! :D

What a dillema ? Surely they must be looking at the ladder and
thinking, fuckit, we cant get into the finals, and we need some
prime draft picks to be competitive next year, *BUT* we want
to show the fans we are trying..

Who would be a coach ???

Seriously (As a die hard Blues fan) I hope they take the foot
off the pedal... Theres no point in us busting our guts to win
a few last games only to hand Hawthorn or Essendon the
prime picks..

As Halen High pointed out, its a crap system rewarding medicority,
but it is the system, and any system you must take advantage of..

HH, you tipped Carlton this week ???

Im worried now, they might win.. Fuck the Hawks !! We want the
draft picks !!! :p

Panamark
07-05-2005, 03:04 AM
BOMBER, I believe there is a point that Essendon will internally wave
that flag too.. However I think it will be if you lose this week....
I assume then its pretty much mathematically impossible to make
the eight. Sheedy at that point would be wise enough to rotate
the young uns to give em some game time, and look towards
the draft. Just like Carlton.

I wouldnt put money on it, but if the Blues apply themselves for four quarters,
I think they could ! But I havent seen them play four quarters

- The current form slump is not forever
- The team is rebuilding
- Checkout your team's VFL progress (Good indicator for those that are
about to step up) and its great to see your teams grassroots.
- Take heart that you will have some choice midfielders next year
- Young players are inconsisent.
- Dont watch games expecting to win, watch them as a coach, look at
which players are improving, falling back, and especially the young
ones who are improving. (Make this the focus, instead of the win)
- Enjoy the passages of play that demonstrate things can and will
work again.

Lastly and most importantly.

- Essendon and Carlton are the greatest ever teams in recorded
history !

- Follow your second team, if they are going to make it into the 8.

Hope that helps mate ! ;)

In AFL history or VFL history?

Come on you guys it's a national comp now.

By the way, did you guys see Tyson Edwards all-time most obvious deliberate out of bounds on the weekend that was not given? Just stood there and hand balled it straight over the line from about 5m. The ump runs in and says throw it in. And what about all the 50m penalties? For a few words or just grabbing a guy for a second on the mark. Then they let it go for the rest of the game. I give up.

BOMBER
07-12-2005, 08:31 PM
VFL history is still the history of the strongest football comp in Australia.
Mate,50 metre penalties are our speciality down at Essendon, just ask Dean Solomon.I seriously don't think the umpires like us very much at Essendon after Hirdy's comments against McLaren on the footy show.
Those comments were right,McLaren is beyond a joke as an umpire and throw Goldspink in also who loves the attention and grandstands every single game he umpires.

Halen High
07-13-2005, 04:10 AM
The umpires and some of the rules they are asked to interpret are ruining the game. The 50m penalty should be thrown out. 50m for saying "you're bloody kidding". The AFL Commision is trying to make footy the cleanest most respectable code. They're terrified of what the Americans call 'The Soccer Mums'. They are going too far and in the process making footy VERY frustrating to watch.

I agree that the VFL is the strongest comp in the history of the sport, but I think the records for AFL premierships should begin with either the Swans starting in Sydney, or Brisbane or West Coast joining the comp.

Then again, there is an argument that the interstate teams simply joined the VFL, which could explain why the Victorian based clubs still set the agenda off the field.

Panamark
07-13-2005, 07:28 AM
Ive long believed that some umpires get "starstruck" and its definately
to the home teams advantage when you get an umpire such inclined.

The umpires "play" to the crowd. If you have 40,000 supporters of
one team there and 2000 opposition fans, you will be loudly applauded
for every decision you give to the home team. I really believe some
umpies get off on this...

As for these dodgy 50 metres and deliberate out of bounds rules,
All of these rules would be fine if they were consistent in
their interpretation, but the buggers never are !!

One rule that I actually think has made a great improvement
to the game is the new holding the ball rule. If you have prior
oppurtunity and dont dispose of it, Your'e Gone !!
This has been terrific, notice how much more free flowing the
game is. The ball gets flung out of packs or tackles quickly
now instead of being bunched in.. I reckon its great..

Panamark
07-15-2005, 02:05 AM
Good luck, I would like to see Essendon win, but after hearing
Sheedy physically conceeding, you would think he will be now
using the remainder of the season to test the younger blokes
out and see which of the older brigade deserve to be there
next year..

Should be an interesting game, both teams are coming off
embarrasing defeats.. More I think of it, its probably a toss
of the coin job this one. Go the Bombers !!

It kinda sucks though, with the Pies and Bombers locked on
points, the Bombers would move up a rung, and be another
step away from the best picks...

I guess its good in a way, if you lose you can console yourself
that you are in a good position for draft selections, and if you
win, you get that natural winning enjoyment you love so much,
(albeit with a tinge of too little to late)

Ah footy !!

In all seriousness, I hope Carlton puts in a decent performance but
"allows" Hawthorn to win. Much like the game against the dockers.
I lost count of the amount of positives I witnessed in that game,
and was happy that we didnt compromise our posistion.

Kicking 17 goals, 10 different goal scorers and some excellent returns
from injury. Some very good signs for the baby Blues. Add the
prime draft picks next season to this list, and we really will have
(for the first time since the harshest penalties in the history
of the AFL) the building blocks completed.

My wish is that they repeat their efforts of this week, but let the
Hawks take the points. The season is a dead rubber now, may aswell
milk the system for the best players....

To be honest Im surprised at Essendon's win, then again, perhaps
Malthouse wants earlier draft selections ;) You guys could win
every game now, finish one game out of the eight and go into next
season with limited new options.... As an Essendon supporter, I
wouldnt want that.

Its hard to say you are actually comfortable with losing, but there
is a point where the season is dead and you start planning for
the next. Sheedy has already admitted this, so Im surprised he
gave the points (draft) to Collingwood.

BOMBER
07-18-2005, 01:51 AM
Mate, after friday nights game I've completely swung into a positive frame of mind on the Bombers.I haven't been this positive in ages.
Last year over summer we were predicted to do shithouse this year and then lost every game pre-season including the wizard cup. This bad form continued into the main part of the season.
Our kids hadn't really shown anything but now are really starting to come on.Stanton has turned into a very good player already and Kepler Bradley looks the goods,Monfries and Dyson look good also.
They all stood up without alot of experienced players out there on friday night. There will be more of a buzz come pre-season this year about us doing well in 06.

Panamark
07-18-2005, 02:46 AM
You know what, perhaps Sheeds has done the reverse maths too.
As in they cant drop much lower than they are now, even if they lose
every game. In that scenario, its better to try and win, to gain
momentum for next year.. The draft picks from 12th as opposed
to 10th (most likely finishing position if the Bombers win a few)
probably doesnt warrant taking the foot off the pedal. Sheedy
is one smart cat, Im sure he knows whats going down in that
respect...

They sure looked like they were trying against the Pies. I think
they let Collingwood back in a bit though, they should have
won by 60 points. Collingwood were pathetic for 3/4.

BOMBER
07-18-2005, 02:53 AM
West Coast gained momentum from finishing well last year, this is what I'm hoping happens.I'm not comparing us to West Coast but I'm just saying momentum can jazz a place up over summer and have you primed come the new season.
We were the total opposite coming into this season and everybody knew it.

Panamark
07-18-2005, 03:06 AM
Ah well, lets go with the theory that Sheedy doesnt think his draft selections will differ that much by winning a few.. In that case,
good luck !! If they beat Brisbane this week, we will know for a fact
that Sheedy has taken this path, depite knowing its impossible to
make the finals..

Halen High
07-18-2005, 04:30 AM
So what do you guys think, are the Crows this good or is the competition a little thin these days? Remember, the Crows were tipped by most to finish out of the eight.

I pose the question because I've seen some ordinary football teams running around this comp lately. Sure, there's plenty of great 'athletes', but a lot of them seem to find it a challenge kicking or handballing, while under no direct physical pressure, to a team mate 10-20m away.

Not sure we're witnessing this best era of footy at the moment.

Panamark
07-18-2005, 07:27 AM
G'day Halen High,

I reckon the Crows have got an awesome defence.
Thats got to go a long way towards September !
They would have to have the best defence in the competition.
If it was down to Adelaide and West
Coast, I would consider it even money. Why, its at the MCG !!
Something a lot of interstate fans complain about, but in this
scenario I could see where the neutral ground is a good thing.
In fact I would think the crows could topple the weagles at the G.

Now if Geelong, Saints, Roos or Melbourne make the GF. It will be
more interesteing. I think the Crows best shot is if they play one of the interstate teams in the GF. (Weagles, Swans, Lions)

You would have to rate them a chance HH ! (deservedly so)
If I was you I would be getting excited !!

BOMBER
07-18-2005, 06:20 PM
Good Luck with the Crows H'High.
I like a bet on the footy and I've plonked a little hard earned on the Crows at $6.50.For a team that is in 2nd position I can't see why they are such long odds, couldn't resist.
Panamark makes some good points though,I think for the Crows to win they need to play an interstate team on GF day at the G.
I see Adelaide as having a gun midfield which is their strength and can serve it up to the Coasters, plus the Crows have players still around from 97/98 who know what it takes to go all the way.
The jack in the box side at the moment are the Swans,I thought they weren't that good but now they are really playing some great footy and starting to roll.

Halen High
07-19-2005, 12:18 AM
Yep, I reckon the Crows are a chance. They can play exciting footy and as you say Panamark, they have a great defence, which all sides need to win a flag.

I agree Bomber that the Swans are looking good. I'm sure the AFL is desperate for them to go all the way, and they might just do it. At the moment I'd say it's WCE, Crows and Sydney in that order for the flag.

But if the Crows do win it, I'm not sure what this says about the comp.

Here's Round 17;
St Kilda
Hawks (Blues will probably win now I haven't tipped them!)
Geelong
Brissy
Port
Sydney
Kangaroos (we're due to drop one)
Demons

By the way, did you guys see Merret play for Brisbane? Another Lynch in the making?

Panamark
07-19-2005, 02:52 AM
I'll be pissed off if Carlton beat the Hawks !! :D
(Unfortunately on last week's form they should do it easily.)

Denis, listen to me !!!! DRAFT PICKS, DRAFT PICKS !! :p

Agree with you both about the Swannies....
Ive kinda adopted them as my second team due to the
fact Im surrounded by Sydneysiders. Its amazing how
many people are into the Swans in NSW now, as opposed
to when I first moved here (about 10 years back).

Sydney is getting its shit together, AFL and VB on tap at
all licensed venues !!! Not bad hey.. I had to drink farken
Tooheys New when I first arrived here..

A lot of places are also putting in Carlton Draught on
Tap now.. How good is that ??

Swans games are regularly better attended than the Rugby
League.. I think it would be a great thing for AFL in general
if they won, after all, Adelaide, Perth and Brisbane have all
been there now.

I think Sydney have just as much chance as the Crows...

07-20-2005, 02:03 AM
Mate,The Age broke the story today.
I agree with you,the AFL will have to help Carlton out, nobody wants to see Carlton on the skids both on/off the ground.
For this comp to keep prospering we need all clubs to be viable, especially power clubs such as Carlton who have such great support and history.
Still though,I never liked Elliott because he thought he was an elitist and couldn't be touched.I think you guys were right in pulling his name down off that stand.

Panamark
07-20-2005, 02:24 AM
Agree with ya mate ! Look at the Bulldogs, they reckon they are fucked

Carlton president Ian Collins says if the Blues are forced to pay years of back-tax on their social club at Optus Oval it could prove as big a blow to the financial stability of the club as the AFL fines for salary cap breaches in 2002.

The Blues, already struggling to recover from a fine of nearly $1 million for salary cap breaches three years ago, are now facing a fresh financial crisis following an investigation by the Australian Taxation Office (ATO).

The ATO has ordered the Blues to pay back taxes from 2000 to 2004 on their social club - which unlike the football club has been profitable in recent years - after a ruling which decided that separate social clubs that are connected with football clubs, as is the case at Carlton, do not qualify as not-for-profit organisations.

This follows an investigation of the Cronulla-Sutherland club in the NRL, a case that ended up before the Full Bench of the High Court of Australia.

The Blues have until the end of August to challenge the ruling or pay the back taxes, which are believed to be as much as $1 million with St Kilda already having been hit with a much smaller bill of around $50,000 on its social club at Moorabbin.

But to avoid paying the back taxes, the Blues will have to prove money generated from their social club at Optus Oval was not for profit but was for community use by way of maintaining and improving their former home ground.

Carlton president Ian Collins admitted if the Blues are forced to pay the amount demanded by the ATO it could have a devastating effect on the already cash-strapped club.

"To find those sorts of monies (being demanded by the ATO) is a bit like the AFL giving you a fine for salary cap breaches," he said.

"It's not budgeted for and if you receive it, it puts pressure on every part of the business, which is unfortunate."

However Collins has not lost his sense of humour, when asked if he now regretted getting back involved in club administration when he ousted former president John Elliott following the salary cap fines at the end of 2002.

"It gave me a heart attack in the interim," he said of his recent health scare.

"But we've got to make sure Carlton survives and with that prospers."
And Collins did not rule out the Blues, once the most financially powerful club in the competition, from asking the AFL for financial assistance through the competitive balance fund (CBF) should they be forced to pay back taxes.

"That's what it (the CBF) has been created for and if you are in that (a difficult financial) position, why wouldn’t you apply for it and why wouldn't you receive it?" he said.

Collins described the latest financial setback to the Blues as "a kick in the shins" but vowed it would not affect the club's ability to re-sign players with the likes of Scott Camporeale, Matthew Lappin and Lance Whitnall still unsigned for next year or be able to pay its players next season.,

"We can’t take a trick but we have had a lot of issues to resolve and this is another one," he said.

Collins said the Blues could be forced to close their social club if they are forced to pay back taxes on it while chief executive Michael Malouf said the paying of the taxes would be a major setback in the club's bid to be profitable again within three years.

"We have set ourselves a three year plan to get back to an operating neutral (break-even) position and we started it this year and this year we are pretty much on target in terms of year one with a record membership and lots of other positives," he said.

"But we have always said we need everything going right for us in the next three years and for this to come along is going to make that job much more difficult and assuming we have to pay it, it will make life difficult for Carlton going forward."

Eddie and Packer are trying to have an alliance with FOX with 4 games on 9 and 4 on FOX.
7 and 10's ticket is allowed 1st and last rights with the bidding, this is why they should win.
The aFL is gleefully rubbing its hands because they know both tickets are going to try and outbid each other. We could be looking at near the 200 million $ mark here for the rights.Alot of this cah filters back to the clubs,I can't give you exact amounts mate.
The AFL has been less than happy with 9's coverage in Sydney/Brisbane and wants it on up there so the game will get more support up there.

I preferred 7's coverage to be honest. I like the camera shots from

But I cant complain, Ive still got a hacked paytv card from the

Mate,SBS aren't to blame here,it's the other stations who refused to pick up the ASHES because they are tightarses who are to blame.
If it weren't for SBS then we wouldn't have it at all because all the other stations refused to pay the asking price for the rights.
SBS stepped in at the last minute and said it's not fair for the AUssie public not to have the cricket free to air.
SBS when they got the rights way back said they had to still show the conclusion of the cycling and that there would be a clash with the 1st test.

Big news over here today is whether or not the Crows will get a home prelim or not if they get that far.Nobody seems to have an answer on this and we are only 5 weeks before finals.

Panamark

Halen High, yeah the Poms were pissweak in the end..
I think everyone is so surprised at how easily we knocked em over.
As for Carlton, they can actually win a game now and safely retain
the first picks. So lookout for at least one win before the end of

I missed the Crows v Kangas, I wish I had seen it. It was great
watching the Swans show the Weagles they are not invinceable..

Crows, Swans, Eagles and the Lions. All four of the major interstate
clubs have toes in the door, thats for sure !

BOMBER, surely the Crows will get the prelim if they finish out right
second ?? That should be a no brainer. Same if the Swans get 2nd.

Halen High
07-25-2005, 04:45 AM
Yeah, there's a lot of talk about the preliminary final situation over here too as it looks like we're a big chance to finish second. It's a farce that has already affected the Eagles and the Lions in previous seasons. I find it amusing how the AFL administration takes itself so seriously, best exemplified by the pompous Demetriou, yet situations like this, and the uneven draw throughout the season make a mockery of the comp.

By the way, don't miss this weekend's Crows v Swans match. Should be another cracker. Already a sellout.

BOMBER
07-25-2005, 06:30 PM
Panamark, your right,it should be a no brainer in the Crows hosting a prelim if they finished 2nd.
Ask the Brisbane Lions if it's a no brainer, last year they were forced to travel to Melbourne for their prelim and they were the 2nd team in the comp.
I really hope this is worked out for Adelaide,be terrible if they had to travel to the MCG to play the Saints for their home final.

BOMBER
07-25-2005, 06:35 PM
This shit about losing games to come last so you get priority picks is going to be stopped as early as next year.
I'm not pot-shotting Carlton here and I hope they get help to be competitive again,I agree though with the AFL saying the system has to be changed.
It's ridiculous that supporters of clubs hope their side loses so they are rewarded.

Panamark
07-25-2005, 06:37 PM
Agree with all comments, guys.. But if there is a system there, it should be taken advantaage of. Any team in the same posistion
would do so..

As for the Preliminary problem for the Crows.. Read on...

MCC, AFL may sign preliminary final deal
05:57 AEST Tue Jul 26 2005
AAP
The Melbourne Cricket Club and AFL are likely to sign a new deal this week paving the way for two preliminary finals to be played outside Melbourne for the first time.

Representatives of the MCC and the MCG Trust will meet with AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou and chairman Ron Evans on Wednesday.

The MCC is confident they will sign a new contract which will remove the problematic clause requiring at least one preliminary final to be played at the MCG each season.

That long-term arrangement has vexed non-Victorian clubs, which have been disadvantaged by being forced to play "home" finals at the MCG.

Brisbane last year "hosted" Geelong in an MCG preliminary final.

A similar situation will likely occur this year without a change in the contract, given West Coast, Adelaide and Sydney currently occupy the top three positions on the ladder.

But MCC general manager of club operations Trevor Dohnt said there was an expectation that a new deal would be reached in Wednesday's meeting.

"All parties are pretty keen to move forward and sign off on this," Dohnt said.

"The intent is there, it's a matter of fine-tuning the words of the agreement."

Crows chief executive Steven Trigg, whose club has a firm hold on second place and is most likely to benefit from a contract change, urged the AFL to quickly finalise the deal.

"We just want to be clear that it's being pushed as hard as it possibly can be," Trigg said.

The Crows suffered from the AFL's finals scheduling in 2002, when they played a semi-final against Melbourne at the MCG despite being ranked higher than the Demons.

But Trigg said it was not just Adelaide's finals chances, but the integrity of the competition that was at stake.

"To be really clear, there's a level of urgency that the reputation of the competition is appropriately dealt with and understood and that the outcome is in keeping with that," Trigg said.

An AFL spokesman said the league had no comment to make, other than that it was hopeful an agreement would be reached soon.

BOMBER
07-25-2005, 06:45 PM
It will be interesting what sweeteners the AFL offer the MCC,the MCC will want big compo if the contract is to be torn.

Panamark
07-26-2005, 01:37 AM
Ooh yeah !

I thought that contract was just about due to finish anyway ??
Like within a year or so, the MCC would be wise to get some
leverage from the situation now if the end of contract is not
far away...

BOMBER
07-26-2005, 01:47 AM

Yeah come on Panamark. I know there's a little South Aussie in ya! You lived over here for a while if I remember correctly in an earlier post way back. Come on and jump on the Crows!

And that's great that the MCC and AFL look like working out the prelim fiasco. The press put Demetriou under the microscope this week to sort this out. I guess he backed down on the AFL's recent extra cash demands that almost derailed the whole thing. After the WADA incident he couldn't afford another embarrasing stuff-up.

I wouldnt count on a Carlton win, as you know I think Carlton want
the spoon. If Hawthorn played on Saturday and won, I would give
Carlton a big chance, (as they could once again win, without
relinquishing the draft picks) but the Carlton and Hawks game
are being played almost at the same time on the Sunday.
However the Hawks game is starting an hour earlier. I guess
if the Hawks are in an unbeatable position at half time, then
the Blues might try that bit harder.. Its a tough call. After last
weeks mauling of Richmond (when they knew it wouldnt effect
their position) you frustratingly know they could probably win.

Not his biggest fan, but I enjoyed reading an interview with Grant Thomas in today's The Australian, in which he called for greater freedom of speech in AFL footy. He was particularly savage on that protected species known as umpires. Well said Grant.

And did you guys see the Josh Francou head-butt from last week? ONE WEEK!!! Pickett gets two for a fair dinkum (slightly late) footy collision, and Francou gets one for that. Even the usually reserved commentators were appalled. The tribunal has got no idea what it's doing.

Well, it didn't take long for Demetriou to launch into Thomas for his call for greater freedom of speech in AFL.

Demetriou seems to think it's okay for players and coaches to be criticised, but umpires are to be protected at all costs. Does Demetriou ever consider why umpires are so vilified?

The AFL needs to get rid of some of these silly grey rules (like deliberate out-of-bounds) that make the umpires job harder than it needs to be, dramatically improve the standard of umpiring, enforce uniform interpretation, and allow for fair and reasonoble comment on umpiring performance.

IMO, in contemporary AFL it's all about the umpires. It should be all about the players and coaches.

Hi Guys,

Interesting week this week, three teams on priority draft level
(Blues, Pies and Hawks) but all three can compromise these
picks by exceeding the 20 points. With only one more game to
go (after this week) you would expect all three of these teams
to take advantage of this. Carlton could actually draw a game
and still keep the draft picks, but thats where it ends for these
three.

My picks this week,

Saints
Cats
Crows
Lions
Bulldogs
Swans
Bombers (I just cant see the Blues giving up those picks)

I don't bet on the footy, or anything else, but perhaps I should lol!

How about the umpire scandal that's raging at the moment. Will be very interesting to see what happens over the next couple of weeks.

Yeah, I can't believe the Blues/Essendon result. I thought the Bombers would win a tight one. The Blues have hit rock bottom. Pagan must be tired of the struggle. Still think the AFL's punishment of Carlton has hurt the competition as much as the Blues.

Here's my final round tips;

Bulldogs
Swans
Eagles
Power (please make me wrong Freo, PLEASEEEEEEEEEE)
Saints
Cats
Kangas
Demons

Even if they did want to lose,I don't think the plan was to be that pathetic.I couldn't believe what I was watching at times.
Saints have copped some huge injuries and the Coasters form has been up/down.
Crows and Swans are the two clubs currently in the best form, crows facing the Eagles in Perth for top spot is must see viewing.
Bombers will end Melbourne's season on sunday,we have a habit of fucking them up when it counts.

Hi Guys,

Of course Carlton were playing for the draft picks.
Along with Collingwood and Hawthorn.
Carlton have the pre-season and main draft pick
priority if they stay where they are. No crap, I was
happy that they lost. You would have noticed its the
first time this year I actually tipped against them.
(And against Essendon !!) They would have to have rocks
in their heads to give up those picks now.

Some really interesting games coming up this week.
HH, glad they sorted out the finals/MCG drama for
the Crows, you gotta be happy with that..

Anway the AFL are changing the laws about purposely cellar dwelling to scoop the draft.
Next year there will be no reason to come last unless your not up to it.

My prob isn't so much with Carlton it's with Collingwood, however this will be the 3rd year straight you guys have had first picks so it's about time you guys started to show some improvement.
Collingwood were in successive GF's just 2 years ago and have had major injuries this year. That's just the luck of the game and I don't see why they should be rewarded for bad luck.
I mean at Essendon we've had major injuries also but still never gave up the ghost and are worse off for it.

Panamark
08-24-2005, 01:36 AM
I thought this year was the first that Carlton was eligable to partake
in the Draft? Remember the AFL fined them a million and 2-3 years
of draft picks. (Maybe Im wrong ?)

I feel for you, if Essendon won only 2 more games, they
would be in the mix. You are kinda inbetween the final eight and those
eligable for draft selections..

Carlton will be a different team next year for sure. They know what needs fixing, and Im sure the draft picks will address this. Next year
the Blues will make the eight. (Bold Prediction ;) )

BOMBER
08-24-2005, 01:42 AM
You guys are/were behind the 8-ball because of those restrictions,I think they've been over for a couple of years though now.(I definately could be wrong mate).
How did Nick Stevens get to Carlton,I can't remember?
Have you seen how good Brett Stanton is for a kid at Bomberland?
I think he will go close to winning the BF.

Halen High
08-24-2005, 02:26 AM
Bombers v Demons is a tough one. Would not be surprised if the Bombers get up.

I think Stevens wanted to go to Collingwood, but Port got a little upset about him leaving, so they refused to trade and put him in the draft. Enter Carlton!

Yeah Panamark, would not be surprised to see the Blues back in the 8 next year. Actually, despite all their problems, would anyone be surprised to see the Blues win another flag before Geelong, Melbourne, Saint Kilda, or Freo do? The Blues have that tradition.

By the way, saw Peter Motley in our paper the other day. He's doing well these days and has got himself a gorgeous girlfriend. I often see him around the Bay and that's where they met. She owns a fashion store on Jetty Road. Good on him!!!

Panamark
08-25-2005, 05:17 PM
Good news on Peter Motley HH. That was a sad story, I never knew
what happened to him. I knew he was good mates with Scott Campeorale. Good to hear he is doing well.

Bomber, I looked up the penalties on Carlton, last year was the first
time they were allowed draft picks again. However they finished
up the ladder in 2004 and didnt get any priority picks at all this
year.

Heres last years ladder..

http://sportsaustralia.com/afl/2004/ladder.html

So Im hoping they throw this last game and get all the pre season
and main draft priorities. There are a few key positions we need filled
desperately, this could be the greatest thing to happen to the club
since the ridiculously savage penalties. It would be poetic justice that
the Blues actually got to take advantage of the AFL's fucked up
priority system the last year it is in action :)

Don't take this the wrong way mate,I don't think cheating deserves poetic justice.Carlton had their chance to come clean like the Bombers and Melbourne did, however Elliott thought Carlton was a lawless.

Sat up in the members on sunday for the last game for us for the year and Andrew Demetriou was up there just a row away from me.
We then watched the Bombers get absolutely crucified by the umpires for the first 3 quarters.
I think Andrew will have a migrane for days after we kept pointing out to him what a shithouse display it was.
BRING ON O6 for the DONS.

Yeah I know! You should have jumped off the Blues for the tipping mate lol!

I'm not convinced about the Crows (obviously). I can't believe they've finished top. They were tipped by many to finish well outside the 8. It's interesting how during the final season under Ayres many football experts thought their next generation of players were not up to it, and the Crows were in for years of pain. Yet under Craig, they suddenly have a strong list with plenty of promising young players.

Ayres under-achieved big time.

I still find it hard to believe they can win the flag though.

I've tipped the Eagles this week but would not be surprised if the Swans won.

P'Mark - Grab a copy of todays Australian and Age mate.
Both papers are strong on the fact that you guys are looking to trade Fev for more draft picks.
The guy has just signed a contract but in the second half of the season the Carlton board and coaching staff have tired of his attitude and think his second efforts out on the ground don't set a good example for the kids coming through at Carlton.
Fevola is reported as saying he would like to go to the Saints as he has good friends down there.
If the G train retires at the end of the year then maybe this isn't that far fetched.

G'day BOMBER and HH,

Theres a whole article on afl.com about Carlton today, they also
mention that scenario about Fevola. I would be surprised if he goes.
I know many are pissed off with his attitude, but there was also many
that rallied to get his signature. Im guessing they will give him one
more go. (Assuming he wants to stay)

HH its amazing the turn around in the Crows this year, I would never
have picked it at the start of the season, even players like McLeod
seemed to have gotten tired last year.. I dont think Gary Ayres
is a good coach at all. I think his leaving was the best thing to have
happened to Adelaide. I think the Crows have a good chance now
but I think the spoils will go to the Swans or the Eagles.
The Swans seem to be peaking at the exact right time..

I would love to see one of the Vic clubs get up, but Im not that
confident now. I guess we will have a much better idea after
this weekend.

Neil Craig deserves to be coach of the year handsdown.
What's funny with Gary Ayres is that over here he is taking a huge slice of the credit for where Adelaide are currently sitting.
He also thinks Bomber Thompson should be sacked at Geelong because they have similar records.
Sounds like a huge case of sour grapes to me.

I don't think it matters who wins between the Crows and Port as far as the Grand Final is concerned. The Eagles are getting players back, they'll be refreshed, and on their home ground I can't imagine them not getting through.

I just want the Crows to knock Port out. That's enough for me. I honestly don't care about the Flag at this point. Just beating Port.

HOW FUCKING AWESOME WAS THAT?

Didn't just knock them out. WE HUMILIATED THEM. They were so cocky all week. The "game they wanted" said Chad Cornes. BUWAHAHAHAHA!

That was the most tense I've ever felt watching a game of footy. Much more so than the two Grand Finals.

The rivalry is so intense. Commentators on the radio here started having a go at each other on the air at the end of the game because one of them, a Crows fan, told the other, a Power fan, he was sour about the result.

I hope we beat the Eagles, but like many here, knocking out Port just about does it. You're right Panamark, probably is as sweet as the flag.

I've been watching VFL/AFL Grand Finals since the late 70s. Disregarding the exciting finish and taking the game as a whole, the 2005 Grand Final is without a doubt the worst one I've seen.

Why? Apart from a few exceptions, the game was completely lacking in any kind of technical quality. Many great athletes with hearts of steel all over the park, but when was someone gonna play some footy?

Where were the skills?
Where was the composure?

Yes, it was a great contest, but it was also a monumental scrap from start to finish.

Guys like Judd and Cousins just throwing it on the boot and hoping for the best all day.

I'm not sure where our game is headed. But I'm not liking what I see.

Panamark, Bomber, I'll say this, the great Carlton and Essendon sides of the 80s were a hell of a lot better to watch than this.

Surely it's not all about a contest.

I've seen a few Swans games this year and they play this lock down style of football which results in scrimage after scrimage.
Can't say they're the most attractive team in the comp to watch but they proved they were the most effective.
They did have the rub of the green on saturday with injuries etc, however it was great to see them finally end the drought.
How was Staker running into an open goal?
All as he had to do was pick up the ball with 2 hands and not go the flashy 1 hand pickup?

Yeah, I remember Staker. Would that have put the Eagles 16 points up? When the Eagles went 10 points up after that goal from Hunter, I think it was, I thought they would go on and win it.

On reflection I have to say that it was a cracking finals series, close games galore.
Next weeks trade week, should be more than interesting to see what happens here.Lance is tipped to be heading to the Demons.

Just want to say it's been great shooting the shit here in this AFL thread with you guys, especially P'Mark and H'High, you guys know your football.

We have a distinguised guest amongst us,

Looks like the Bombers and the Blues have
far better sides than last year, I watched the
game last nigh (GO THE BLUES) and I cant
believe how much faster and skillful the Blues
look. Essendon too...

Time to get back into it, all Aussies on deck :)

Hey Bomber, how ya going mate? It is THE Bomber from the Links?

Now Panamark, no more distiguished guest bullshit, I've been round here long enough to be considered just another Army douchebag who hates the Links. OK!

By the way, the pies will do all right, we have a secret weapon all the way from Ireland who is going to do the business for sure for sure.

How was the Collingwood Hall of Fame night the other evening?
I read in the paper that it was a big night for you guys with Dennis Banks getting inducted.
Ye're mate,it's the same BOMBER that peddles the same shit about the EFC over at the LInks - 3 wins in a season as you can imagine had me pretty quiet last year mate.

Panamark, congrats on the win in the NAB Cup.
Let's hope for your sake history doesn't repeat from 2 years ago.If you compare the lists from now to then there wouldn't be too much chance of that happening.
I'm not so sure about the Dons mate,I think it will come down to injuries mate,we don't have much depth.Look out for Leroy Jedda and Aaron Davey's brother Alwyn to make an immeadiate impact for us.

G'day Charles and the Bomber Man !! :D

Cant believe we are on the eve of another season.
Thats quite a prediction list there BOMBER...
I want to see each team play at least one game
before making the same prediction. I didnt get
to see every NAB game in Sydernee..

Glad to see the Blues higher up in your expectations.
Just below the Bombers, hey ?? lol...

Plexi, did you see the Blues recruited Greg Swann ?
(Did you have anything to do with him ?)
So who is the mystery Irishman for the Pies ?
What do you think of O'hailpin at Carlton ? These
Irish dudes are starting to kick ass !

Bomber, I respectfully would have to predict
Fevola for the Coleman. Same as last year.
I reckon he is looking even more dangerous
this year. In fact the new rules (hands in the back)
will really boost the likes of Fev and Lloyd..
Could be a major shootout for the title !
Should start seeing bags of 100+ again.

Im assuming the AFL is keeping this rule for
the season proper ? I like it. The defenders must
fucking hate it..lol...

Will have to get the tips in by Friday ! WOOHOO
Bring it on !! :D

Once the swans have a 2 goal lead and
5 minutes left, they will usually win everytime.
Those bastards are the worst for keepings off
at the end of the game !! (And Sydney is my
second side)

I see Carlton are going in as underdogs with the bookies
tonight.. I hope they can prove em wrong..

I will pick Carlton and West Coast for tonight..
Hopefully we can get the whole gang tipping

MCG is awesome, I remember going there as a small

It was one of those games where there was over 120,000..
I was actually scared when the siren sounded at the first
bounce and the crowd went nuts.. heheheh

I first met Bomber at the MCG about 2 years ago. It was a match between Hawks and Siants - Saints won. Back then it was under renovations, should be pretty good now, it was sure damn good place to watch the footy then. And being brought up with Rugby League, those Victorians are a passionate crazy bunch lol - it leaves a good impression.

BTW, Dan, Australia v NZ tonight in the League. You follow it?
