Johnny Cash...if there will ever be any human other than Jesus Christ to die and then return back from it, this'll be him.

The man was a god...what else can be said?

Yeah, Cash could lay it down without a doubt. Plus, he's a true example of what can happen when a talented artist gets hooked up with a producer and record company that love and respect him.

Well I woke up Sunday morning
With no way to hold my head, that didn't hurt
And the beer I had for breakfast wasn't bad,
So I had one more for dessert.
Then I fumbled in my closet through my clothes
And found my cleanest dirty shirt.
Then I washed my face and combed my hair
And stumbled down the stairs to meet the day.....

"Cleanest dirty shirt".......

Fucking killer.

Cash and Dylan

This song was written by a Mr. Carl Perkins:
I remember when I was a lad, times were hard and things were bad.
But there's a silver lining behind every cloud.
Just poor people, that's all we were, tryin' to make a livin' out of black land dirt.
But we'd get together in a family circle singin' loud.

I always stop and admire the big oversized poster of him giving the finger to the camera they have down at my local mom 'n' pop music store...paying homage... :)

The song with Danzig was pretty cool, too ("13", I think it was called).

You guys ROCK!

My ring tone is Johnny doing "I Walk the Line"

This part right here...

"Sure as night is dark and day is light
I keep you on my mind both day and night
and happiness I've known proves that its right
because you're mine, I walk the line"

Been listening to the Folsom Prison CD from 1968 a lot lately. Great stuff.

Dylan
Springsteen - Give My Love To Rose
U2 - Don't Take Your Guns To Town
Wyclef - Delia's Gone
Dave Matthews & Emmylou Harris - Long Black Veil
Chris Isaak - Get Rhythm & Guess Things Happen That Way
Kristoferson - Man In Black
Willie & Sheryl Crow - Jackson/Orange Blossom Special
Emmylou, Sheryl, and Roseanne Cash - Flesh & Blood
June Carter Cash - Ring Of Fire
Johnny - I Walk The line
Roseanne Cash - Sunday Morning Coming Down

Those are the ones I remember. I know Marty Stuart did a bunch of stuff and some alt-country band (the mavricks maybe) were the house band.

FOLSOM PRISON BLUES

Well, I hear that train a comin'
It's rollin' around the bend
I ain't seen the sunshine
since I don't know when
well, I'm stuck in Folsom prison
and time keeps draggin' on
that train keeps rollin'
on down to san antone
when I was just a baby
my mama told me son
always be a good boy
don't you ever play with guns
but I shot a man in Reno
just to watch him die
when I hear that lonesome whistle
I hang my head and cry
well I bet there's rich folks eating
in a fancy dinin' car
I bet they're taking mushrooms
and smokin' big cigars
well, i know I had it comin'
I know I can't be free
those people keep movin'
and that's what tortures me
if they free me from this prison
if that railroad train was mine
you bet I'd move it on
a little farther down the line
yeah, far from Folsom prison
that's where I want to be
well, those people keep movin'
Goddammit, that's what tortures me
if they'd free me from this prison
if that railroad train was mine
you bet I'd move it on
a little farther down the line
yeah, far from Folsom prison
that's where I want to be
well those people keep movin'
Goddammit that's what tortures me

Of the Rick Rubin produced stuff, my favorite is the Solitary Man disc:

Field of Diamonds
That Lazy Old Sun
and there's one other ballad on there that are as beautiful as it gets...

That's an incredible album. My favorite on that one is MERCY SEAT (written by Nick Cave). It's probably my favorite Johnny Cash recording ever.

Cash is one of the very few who defied any and all labels... The very essence of "artist" in every way.

At the moment, I can't honestly think of anyone in music who deserves mention in the same breath and scope.

Johnny was more than a national treasure, he was "everyman" while being anything but.

May his soul Rest In Peace, his music will live forever more.

Would You Lay With Me (In a Field of Stone) is the other tune I was thinking of.

Before My Time is another one that I'd like to hear while I'm on my death-bed.

Right back at ya, Rikk.

Oh, here's a good Johnny story:

A few years ago he was in attendance at the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame dinner. At one point or other he went to the men's room, goes to a urinal, and commences.

While Johnny is standing there having a slash, Keith Richards saunters on in, drunk (of course), and takes the urinal next to Johnny. Keith starts going, "Hey, take a look at this! The outlaw legend of rock'n'roll taking a leak next to the outlaw legend of country! We raelly should get a picture of this! Someone really should take this picture! We should preserve this moment for posterity!"

Johnny looks at Keith. "No, Keith," he says, "We really shouldn't."

Rikk

LMFAO!!!

I love when legends like Johnny put people in their places. I think Keith Richards is great...but he's NOWHERE NEAR the level of talent Johnny has.

That's a tough one. If Greatest Hits discs are ruled out...

I would argue one of his mid-60s LPs, plus maybe the San Quentin live album and his third AMERICAN RECORDINGS album, SOLITARY MAN.

Can you believe he almost died before SOLITARY MAN was even recorded? I hated his dying in '03, but I'm glad as hell he got to record that disc before leaving this Earth. The 4th album is good, but not nearly as consistent or adventurous as the 3rd album (or the 2nd one).

...okay...i'm regaining my composure.

I agree. The first one was more or less refinding his feet. The second one is where he got the confidence back (prior to the first his album sales were seriously declining. That's why he brought in Rick Rubin: to re-energize his career. between Rubin's influence and guidance and MTV turning "Delia's Gone" into a hit, Cash was enjoying some of the biggest commercial success of his life). The third one branched out a little bit, my impression is that he and rick rubin had about equal influence on the albums tracks.

the fourth my impression is that that was largely rick's choice of songs, cash just got in there and played them. I'm sure his health was much more on his mind than his performances. I like it, and there's some really great touching stuff there, but the third contains some of the best songs and performances not just of his career, but ever.

Prasies for him holding on long enough to create it.

Yup. Good insights.

My biggest problem with the 4th album is that he seems to be picking covers that are just too predictable. Like "wouldn't it be neat if PERSONAL JESUS were a country song"...and does he really need to do DESPERADO, DANNY BOY or IN MY LIFE? They're fine songs, but overdone.

HURT, THE MAN COMES AROUND and a few others are brilliant. But nothing is as compelling as MERCY SEAT. And nothing sounds like it was created by a man compelled to make music.

Listening to the box set of unreleased AMERICAN recordings, it is clear to me that some of the best material from the sessions for the 4th album were left in the vault until the box set was released.

I am really intrigued to hear the 5th album (Cash wasn't quite finished with it before he died, but it is coming out soon, I hear). It's post-June, and apparently has some originals. I hope it's good.

They've been approached re: ring of fire. They've refused. I think you can imagine why.

Likewise, pete Twonsend is apparently constanyl being apporached by Ex-Lax for "My Generation". You know, "Talkin' about my constipation". They're offering millions, but is it worth the hate of every fan he's ever had?

JOHNNY CASH - THE MUSICAL!
http://www.nme.com/media/images/JohnnyCash_M.jpg

JOHNNY CASH is to be idolised in a BROADWAY musical expected to hit theatres in late 2006.

The late legend’s life will be the focus of ‘Ring Of Fire’, directed by Richard Maltby Jr, reports Variety.

The show, which will feature Cash’s faith, love and life experiences, will feature over 49 songs by him and his late wife June Carter Cash.

The title track, ‘I've Been Everywhere’, ’Folsom Prison Blues’ and ’A Boy Named Sue’ all feature in the play, which producer Bill Meade and Phoenix Prods will preview in select cities next autumn.
