Off topic somewhat, but Keith Richards refers to his 5-string open g tuning as 5-strings, 3-notes, 2-fingers, and 1-asshole.

LOL! Not a Keef fan then, huh?

He started using alternate tunings around the time of Beggars Banquet (1968). He played around with Drop D, Open E, and a couple of others, but really locked into open G. It's what lends his tone that unique "ringing", that makes tunes like "Start Me Up" instantly recognizable after even just the first chord. (and also the fact that his rhythm can be completely idiosyncratic. Bill Wyman once said one of the things that make the Stones unique is that they're just about the opnly band where the rhythm is dictated not by the drummer, but by the guitarist.)

Is that tuning your bottom E to G and then tuning the rest of the guitar
to that ?? Or is it drop tuning just one string ?? I know the Drop D

but it's great for slide.
there's also a coupla jeff buckley songs in this
tuning.

give it a go! it changes all your
'go to' chords, riffs etc.
