Who's going to be the best director?

Once again...Clint Eastwood.

The guy's hero was John Houston...one of the best...

and Clint's taken over that mantle...

Spielberg's quoted as saying he wished he could make subtlety so powerful...

If Scorsese wins...I've got no problem with that...although this movie is nowhere near his best...

Actually, I thought MYSTIC RIVER was a better film... And that movie was great partly because he didn't overdo things (emotions, shots, action) in the usual Hollywood film. Pure subtlety...very engaging. And he's been doing that all the way since PLAY MISTY FOR ME.

I liked Mystic River...but thought this movie was much better...

I thought Mystic River got really convoluted at the end...almost like he forced the ending a bit...

I think both the Unforgiven and Million Dollar Baby were smacks in the face...

All three weren't exactly...HAPPY movies...

I haven't seen MIDNIGHT IN THE GARDEN OF GOOD AND EVIL (I really should!!), but knowing the real-life story it's based on, I'm sure it's also not happy. Hell...he's certainly taken a darker turn during his later career. No more upbeat Westerns, etc. But Clint was never particularly happy (besides the EVERY WHICH WAY films). Even his detective films (DIRTY HARRY, TIGHTROPE, BLOOD WORK) aren't happy at all.

I liked Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil...but...I think the trueness of it hurt...it wasn't a subtle movie...not by any stretch...

Why do so many people hate it? The hatred it received is one of the reasons I haven't run out to see it.

BTW, I did pick up FIREFOX. It was not very good. It really lacked a performance. It was just 2 1/2 hours of cat 'n' mouse shit, and really dull. One of his worst films, IMO.

No, Scorcese has done much better films, but my gut tells me he's gonna take this catagory.
I hope i'm wrong because i cannot stand DiCaprio, and him portraying Hughes is a joke to me.

Im just saying the vibe is in the air for this to be a "Gimme" for Scorcese, we'll see.

Yeah, but I thought GANGS OF NEW YORK was excellent.

I liked Firefox...I'll have to watch it again though...

as for a Gimme for Scorcese...I wouldn't argue with it...that's for sure...

I actually like Gangs of New York...more for Daniel Day Lewis than DiCaprio...and another Scorcese flick that deserved it before this one...

Daniel Day Lewis was amazing. That is literally one of the best performances in a Hollywood film I've ever seen.

As for FIREFOX, it's just that it's plot plot plot and no character. It didn't even feel like an Eastwood film. I was really disappointed.

Leonardo, "Nard" as i call him, should have gone down with the Titanic and never returned in a movie.

I liked "Gangs", but not for him, the boy makes any movie hard for me to watch, period.

I actually got all tied up with Eastwood's "lost" character...

You just have to let go of the plane man...let go of "thinking in English..."

it's an inner battle...Firefox is just a metaphor...

I liked the beginning much better than the end...

Million Dollar Baby.

Eastwood made exactly the movie he wanted to make, and didn't compromise an inch. This was a movie not about entertainment. It wasnm't even political, though it has become such. In many ways, it was an even smaller slice of life than Sideways.

That he could take a movie that was going at one speed and direction, and completely shift it so suddenly and so completely and turn it into the most depressing thing I've ever seen (and I've seen Katydid' amateur porn video, so I know depressing films!) is really saying something.
