Why Can't This Be Love? was released as a single a month or so before the album, and was not a good sign. All I had been reading for 8 months prior to March 1986 was a lot of shit in the press from the Van Halens about how much better the band and music were now that Roth wasn't there, and how much better the sound was since Ed and Don Landee had essentially produced the album themselves.
Good Enough, from the beginning strains of that Big Bopper "Hello, Baby!" cheese-off by Hagar, set the tone for what was to come. Ed's tone was severely different, the Simmons drums sounded like shit, then and now. It was at this point where Eddie's playing became a parody of itself; the solos were fobbed-off but lacked interest, and his whole approach just sounded like he was doing it half-assed. Dreams was pop-schmaltz. Summer Nights was so-so. Best of Both Worlds was gay. So was Love Comes Walking In.
The title track, strictly in terms of instrumentation, was really the only thing that retained any of my interest. The Inside was throwaway.
Was never a fan of Hagar before, and he didn't get any better with VH. Listening to that whole enterprise was a big fucking let-down. Part of the problem was that in the interim between the releases of 1984 and 5150 (a little more than 2 years) Yngwie had made an impact, Vivian Campbell was still smoking...with 5150, EVH no longer stood out from the pack, because everyone and their brother had already dissected his style and two hands on the fretboard coupled with vibrato bar antics was no longer special, so he had to rely more on his songwriting skills with Van Hagar...didn't quite pan out.
3 to 4 months later after 5150, Eat 'Em And Smile came out and fucking cratered Van Hagar, regardless of who outsold whom. Dave put together a slammin' band that blew Sam Halen out of the water.Scramby eggs and bacon. -

JCOOK ! Thanks for the kind words my friend !
Yes I have seen a Tasmanian Devil, many times. Yes they
are nasty little critters, but I like em !
We used to have a creature called the Tasmanian tiger,
(Thylacine)
it was like a cross between a wolf and a tiger. It was hunted
to extinction in the 20's. (I think ?) Everynow and then
somebody claims to have seen one still alive in the wild.
(Personally I think they are extinct, shame)
Recently scientists were going to try and clone one from
the DNA of a Tiger Pup they had in a jar of formaldehyde....BABY PANA 2 IS Coming !! All across the land, let the love and beer flow !

I bought the tape. At that time I wasn't really familiar with Sammy Hagar. I saw some of his videos on MTV (Can't drive 55) but I never owned a Sammy album or went to a Sammy show. All I knew was the dude was very different than Dave.
My whole take on Van Halen at that time was Dave made a decision to leave the band. It was Dave's call and Eddie, Alex, and Mike had to find a replacement. I thought choosing Sammy Hagar was a strange pick because Sammy played guitar and was nowhere the caliber of EVH. I was just very curiouse.
In short, when I heard Sammy going "Hellooooo Babyeeeee!" my gut wrenched and all I could think of was how fucking lame! Then when I heard Sams lyrics about a waitress and some specials I'm thinking it's a horny 12 year old who wrote the lyrics. It was scary and my hate for Van Hagar didn't take long to emerge. Sam was a huge dissapointment to say the least. No! You can't have the keys to the wine cellar!Comment

I thought it was okay, at first. I played it for awhile but never got into it. Went to theit Detroit concert that year, and after that just stopped listening to them. I have never heard any of their songs since then. Only the 6 pack for me!Comment

I remember being in a disco and asked the dj to play van halen's "jump" and he came up with "WCTBL"...I said something like "wrong title, motherfucker!!!" and me and my friends were asked to leave...
I listened to the album once...saw live without a net once...it sucked and I was finished with the halens...periodRoth Army Icon

I remember hearing the intro to "Summer Nights" on the radio and thinking it sounded cool...until Sammy Hagar came screeching in and ruined it for me.Comment
