View Full Version : The best American twin guitar duo?

Mr Badguy
03-22-2005, 08:14 AM
The british bands always seem to have the most celebrated guitar duos: Tipton and Downing (Priest), Murray and Smith (Maiden), Robertson and Gorham (Thin Lizzy) and...erm... Benson and Hedges.

Who would yer favourite US pairing be?

I would pick:

Brad Gillis and Jeff Watson (Night Ranger): their dualling licks are still mind blowing and both have instantly recognizable styles, Gillis with the innovative whammy bar control and Watson with some excellent EVH style tapping.

Chris DeGarmo and Michael Wilton (Queensryche): pretty similar players but really lock in on those tricky harmony solos (ala "NM 156", "Walk in the shadows" etc.).

Jeff Hanneman and Kerry King (Slayer): masters of thrash.

Who`s next?

Joe Perry and Brad Whitford both compliment each other tremendously.

Paul Gilbert and Bruce Bouillot.

What about Tommy Shaw and James Young from Styx. I dig the work they did on Paradise Theater.

Slash and Izzy - a very good call UGS.

I know they're not American, but what about Angus and Malcolm?

Yeah, Slash and Izzy make it. I've precisely been listening to Appetite for destruction and Use your illusion (I) for more than a week while driving to work.
It's a shame they didn't last longer (but it seems they really couldn't).
Number one team. Excitement guaranteed. :smoke2:

Tom Verlaine and Richard Lloyd. First person to name their band wins a jelly bean.

And Perry and Whitford are just incredible.

Paul Gilbert and Bruce Bouillot in Racer X Band.. a load of GIT students.

:D Oh, er, marshmallow, please.

Meanwhile, I thought of another power pair, but it wasn't meant to last, unfortunately: STEVE HUNTER and DICK WAGNER, on...?

The first to name the record and artist will deserve a raclette (melting cheese à la savoy). But it's a bit easier.

What about Tommy Shaw and Ted Nugent during their collaboration in Damn Yankees? I think they sound fantastic on those two CDs.

This one probably does not count since one of them is primarily the lead singer from the band (but he does play rithm guitar in most songs):

Rick Nielsen and Robin Zander from Cheap Trick.

I sincerely believe these two (and actually the comment also applies to the entire band) are among the most underrated musicians (Rick Nielsen is a guitar genius IMHO while Robin Zander has one of the most distinctive vocals in rock) in the American music scene.

Hetfield/Hammett.

I just plopped "Miss America" in the riff thread.

"Queen of Spades"

"Blue Collar Man"

I pretty much prefer their rock numbers.

Nielsen and Zander.
I know, it's a stretch.

Jérôme Frenchise

Buzzz! Well, sorry, time's up! I'll keep the raclette for another occasion. :)

The answer was Dick Wagner and Steve Hunter (who played on ALAE) were the unbelievable guitar duettist on Lou Reed's famous and gigantic live album "Rock 'n' roll animal". The only one who wasn't great on that one was Reed himself.
But damned, how the musicians were extraordinarily good (Funkadelic's rhythm section was there too).

Easy, though.

Rich Robinson and Marc Ford were great too in the Black Crowes, especially in the second (magic) album.

You may not like Stryper but those two cunts could peel off a solo or two.

Frank Hannon/Tommy Skeoch from Tesla.
Used the love their stuff when they first came out.

I was thinking of Hetfield/Hammet myself but Kirk just plays what James tells him. They do fit well together though.

Night Ranger is a fine choice, so is Cacophony, but Racer X has my vote... I don't count Lynard Skynard cuz they have THREE guys, not 2... I did enjoy Steve Vai and Mike Keneally, though!!
