I've recently heard a many-splendored old MARANTZ tube amp feeding the real JBL's in a custom-designed plywood shoebox....the only thing modern was a cuntpletion-backwards-principle, artsy-fartsy tube DAC. It was pretty loud and clear as clear can clearly be.

It's all subjective and everybody's GONZO.
