My favourites are...

'2112' (Rush),
'Dark Side...' (Floyd),
'...Topographic Oceans' (YES),
'Seventh Son...' (Maiden)
'Snow' (Spock's Beard),
'Testimony' (Neal Morse)

I'm just trying to think, ELP never did a concept album, did they?

Does Dream Theater's 'Change of Seasons' count as a concept album?

"The Wall" by Pink Floyd.

It isn`t `til you get a bit older that you realize how fucked up that album is.

Just like life.

It also makes you feel as if it isn`t just you who struggles with the shit inside your head that you think fucks you up.

"So, so you think you can tell
Heaven from hell
Blue skies from pain
Can you tell a green field
From a cold steel rail?
A smile from a veil?
Do You thinkyou can tell?

Did they get you trade your heroes for ghosts?
Hot Ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze?
Cold comfort for change?
Did you exchange
a walk-on part in the war
for a lead role in a cage?

How I wish, how I wish you were here
We're just 2 lost souls swimming in a fish bowl year after year
Runnin' over the same old ground
of how we found the same old fears
wish you were here..."

"Take all your overgrown infants away somewhere
And build them a home a little place of their own
The fletcher memorial
Home for incurable tyrants and kings

And they can appear to themselves everyday
On Closed Circuit TV
To make sure thy're still real
It's the only connection they feel
'Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome Reagan and Haig
Mr. Begin and friends. Mrs Tatcher and Paisley
Mr. Brezhnev and party
The ghost of McCarthy
The memories of Nixon
And now, adding colour, a group of anonymous latin-
American meat packing glitteratti'.
Did they expect us to treat them with any respect?

They can polish their medals and sharpen their
Smiles, and amuse themselves playing chess for a while.
Boom boom, bang bang, lie down, you're dead.

Safe in the permanent gaze of a cold glass eye
With their favourite toys,
They'll be good girls and boys
In The Fletcher Memorial Home for Colonial
Wasters of Life and Limb

Is everybody in?
Are you having a nice time?
Now, the final solution can be applied."

I do like The Final Cut, but it's more of a Roger Waters solo album than a Pink Floyd album.

Speaking of Roger Waters 'Amused To Death' is an excellent concept album.

ELP did several concept albums - all under the theme of how hard a rock band can suck.

Pet Sounds, the first 'true' concept album.

Probably. Amazing how they completely wasted it on that shitty excuse for music.

Shaun Ponsonby
04-22-2005, 05:45 PM
What's so shitty about it?

I love ELP.

Only the very best can do 'Pictures At An Exhibition'.

There is a big 'buzz' in the UK about a really shite band called Keane, because they are a rock band, but they don't have a guitarist. These people have never heard of Emerson Lake and Palmer.

You're right there! KEANE FUCKING SUCK!!!

A friend told me about them - in fact, she got me the disc, she works at Interscope - and told me that I've got to got to got to listen to this, it's the best thing ever ever ever.

MAN, dOES THAT DISC SUCK!!! I WOULD SOONER LISTEN TO ELP OVER THAT SHIT!!!

Waylon Jennings, Jessi Colter, Eric Clapton, a few others - White Mansions
The Who - Tommy, Quadrophenia (nobody has mentioned these?!)
Extreme - Pornograffiti (apparently it's an album about urban decay... I guess it's loosely a concept album)

A bunch of great ones already mentioned, all the Floyd stuff as well as Tommy

I love Sgt. Pepper too

How is 'When I'm President' linked with 'When I First Kissed You'?

I'm not sure. I just read it somewhere. It kinda makes sense. Listen to the start of Decadence Dance and the end of Hole Hearted. There's the sound of rain. The album DOES seem to kinda be about urban decay... loosely, at least. 3 Sides is sort of a concept album, too, I guess. (Yours, mine, the truth, etc...)

In no order...

01 - Savatage: "Streets"
02 - Queensryche: "Operation: Mindcrime"
03 - Iron Maiden: "Seventh Son of a Seventh Son"
04 - Trans Siberian Orchestra: "Christmas Eve & Other Stories"
05 - King Diamond: "Them" tied with "Conspiracy"
06 - Opeth: "Still Life"
07 - Dio: "Magica"
08 - Styx: "Paradise Theater" (somewhat a concept album)
09 - Pink Floyd: "The Wall"
10 - Dream Theater: "Scenes from a Memory"

Yeah!

I just listened to that the other day after not hearing it for years and it is good.

However some of the songs are too much the same and the busy drum parts overpower the songs at times.

It has been rereleased with a second CD containing out-takes from the album and the bands set from Donington `92.

That's Music FROM the Elder, the KISS concept album from 1981.

Sort of a rock opera idea that came from KISS producer Bob Ezrin.

It was certainly an ambitious project but it wasn't the right time. It was a time where bands like Maiden, VAN HALEN, Judas Priest, etc. were steamrolling KISS with harder rock albums.

It was the worst selling album in KISS' history.

Taken as a KISS album, its not very good.

However, I actually like it and think there are some very cool songs on it.

Namely:

Odyssey
Only You
Dark Light
The Oath
A World Without Heroes
I

Even the instrumental "Escape from the Island" featuring Ace and the late Eric Carr is pretty cool too.

Had KISS done this kinda album much later on and without the makeup, maybe it would've been received a little better.

My favorite 'concept' album would have to be Iron maiden's "Seventh Son..". No doubt.

Are you sick of hearing songs from Bat Out Of Hell, or have you just never liked it?

m_dixon1984

Both! First, I never liked it (for so many reasons). Second, it was so overplayed for such a long time that I've developed a definite hatred for the whole thing.

Penthouse with Savatage? Um...wow...interesting. :)

Opeth is more than fantastic...Opeth is the best band I've heard, in ANY form of music, for years now. Saw them live a while back and they were absolutely fucking brilliant. Per Wilberg just joined in on keyboards full time now, so they're now a 5 piece, and the new album is apparently almost done...should be announcing a new label sometime soon since Music for Nations closed it's doors last year.

That`s one everyone forgets about.

The first half is amzing but the quality dips for the second.

Can`t beat the ending with the NASA landing on Mars and you hear the astronauts being approached by Martians then silence.
