Sam & Mike both said the tour started out fun but quickly turned all business. Mike did not deny my claim that Eddie needs some help and was smoking and drinking and played poorly at times. He also shared some great Roth stories and played some his favorite VH songs. I never hung with Michael before, what a super guy."



What's great about this article is that even Mike says that Eddie played poorly at times and some many people over at the VHlinks were always denying this. I heard it with my own ears in Cleveland and he was so sloppy. It was so sad to see a guy who used to make something that seems difficult to play look so easy....now look at him. I also like that fact that Mike was telling Trunk about some great Roth stories. Now, if you really can't stand the guy, why would you do that. If I couldn't stand someone I'd either mf them or not talk about them at all!!! Maybe, just maybe, somethings gonna happen with VH and Roth after all.....

I'd imagine that Mike (and to a lesser degree even Sam) are probably decent enough guys to hang out with, but...what throws me is how Mike apparently was fooled into believing that 2004 was about old friends reuniting to make great music and it wasn't going to be all work and blah blah blah.

IMO, Ed was a little off, but he was also improvising a bit. Honestly, I think the guy was bored. On the VH3 tour he got to play CVH songs that he hadn't played live since the Dave era. On the '04 tour, a lot of the songs were the same ones he'd done a million times from '86-'95.

His solo was interesting, I thought. He was doing some new stuff. He was experimenting and it was pretty cool. On the '04 tour he was experimenting more but he was also sometimes flat-out screwing up when he tried to do new things. Really, I think Ed was bored. Some of his note choices were very, uh, "interesting" -- in other words, he was playing some stuff that sounded bad -- but ultimately it was coming from boredom. When he was good, he was great (the Mean Street-style playing in his solo was awesome), but when he was bad, it was pretty grim. He wasn't as consistent as the old Ed. The old Ed was consistently jaw-droppingly good. The 2004 Ed could be great or mediocre. It seemed to depend on his mood and, possibly, his level of inebriation. He was different from the guy who revolutionized rock guitar, though... that's for sure.

They just released remastered VH albums two years ago. This had better be like the Springsteen box set, the Beatles Anthology set, the excellent Hendrix box set from two years ago, the Doors box set...in other words, practically all unreleased material. I don't want yet another career retrospective unless it's all a retrospective of unreleased material.

I'm talking the '77 demos, outtakes from the Dave albums (I know for a fact there are a few unreleased and probably finished songs from DIVER DOWN and 1984 and probably one or two that have been written about from VH II), plus alternate takes or versions from these albums. Then you can move on to live stuff...there was apparently a 1984 live album that was recorded and partially mixed. Put some of that on this set (or ALL of it). Then move on to 5150 and the other albums, all having unreleased songs (there are maybe six from F.U.C.K., "I Want Some Action" from 5150 and a few from BALANCE). Get BETWEEN US TWO on a record finally, throw in the outtakes from VH3 and the second MACH III album if you have to, then close it off with the three tracks recorded with Dave in 2000. Done! That's more than enough for a box set if you throw in some retrospective live material and maybe a couple of Eddie demos.

This is what the fans deserve.

BLACK N' BLUE is one of my favorite Van Hagar songs. I like it so much because it is much rawer and reminds me of the Dave days. It's not nearly as polished as some of the other "corporate" stuff. It is probably the main reason OU812 is my favorite Van Hagar album. It's great to know that I'm not the only one who loves the song!

As for CAN'T GET THIS STUFF NO MORE, the music was apparently written and recorded during the BALANCE sessions as "BACKDOOR SHUFFLE." Dave recorded new vocals over it for the BEST OF (ME WISE MAGIC was brand new), and Hagar apparently later sued the band because Dave slightly borrowed the melody on the chorus from Sam's original vocal (he had an out-of-court settlement for $5000).

I agree. BLACK N' BLUE really was the last time the band released a hardcore rock n' roll single until HUMANS BEING, ME WISE MAGIC, and possibly WITHOUT YOU.
