    Attention: ICED EARTH

I recently bought Iced Earth`s new CD " THE GLORIOUS BURDEN", partly on a few positive reviews in magazines and also because they now feature ex Judas Priest vocalist Tim "Ripper" Owens.

    What a pleasant surprise!

    The album rocks!

The band are like a mixture of Maiden/Priest/Metallica, a sorta traditional metal band who have learned from the thrash era, all mixed up in contempary production.

If you have heard Halford`s CDs, then it`s not a million miles away.

The album has a loose concept, all the songs pertain to battles in history (which is not as bad as it sounds), with band leader/songwriter Jon Schaffer`s lyrics being Steve Harris styled history lessons which, if nothing else, would give you an edge in any pub quiz questions about Waterloo or Valley Forge.

The highlight of the album is the 32 minute epic Gettysburg (1863).

Split into three sections, this is arguably the greatest conceptual metal song since "Rime of the ancient mariner". Orchestras, cannons, dualling metal guitars and screaming vocals mesh in an awesome piece of songwriting and arranging that NEVER gets boring.

Tim Owens also gets a fair shake, as when he was in Priest it was always "Bring back Rob Halford!".

Here he is judged on his own merits and his singing is awesome, almost enough to make you think that maybe the arguement that he is a better singer than Halford does hold water.

Iced Earth have arrived at true greatness.

I am as stuck in my ways as are many of us "traditional" metal fans, if you want to hear the best new thing going, I recommend this.

    You cannot go wrong.

I can`t believe noone has viewed this.

    This ain`t The Darkness.

These aren`t 40 year olds pretending to be 25 and ripping off Queen and AC/DC.

Pity, `cos then you would all have bought it.

    This is serious metal.

You`ll love it if you like epic metal.

Unfortunately not all bands have The Darkness style publicity machines backing them up, even though they deserve to be heard just as much.

We`ve been just as starved of quality power metal as we have of throwaway goodtime rock music the past few years.

However, I`ve got a lot to catch up on after travelling the length of Britain last week.

                Mr. Badguy-
                I totally agree with you!
I posted a review of this new CD on DDLR.com a few weeks ago and got almost no response.
                WTF is up with that?!!
For all you people who like traditional-style heavy metal (and I would guess that's most of you) I can almost guaran-fucking-tee you will love the shit outta this CD.
IMO, Iced Earth's "The Glorious Burden" is a masterpiece....definitely their high-water mark!
Killer, heavy yet very tight guitars complete with actual SOLOS.....lightning quick precise drumming....intelligent, historical lyrics....awesome vocals by Tim Owens who hits all the high notes....killer hooks....this CD fucking ROCKS!
I would even say that it's the best CD of 2004 so far. This fucker has not left my CD player in weeks!
Go buy this CD NOW!!! You will not regret it!

Also, Iced Earth are currently on their US tour...playing mostly large clubs and theaters. I'll be seeing them here in Phoenix on May 19th.
I recommend you all go see this band when they come through your town. Again, you WILL NOT regret it!!
Check these fuckers out if you haven't already.....

                  There you go!

                  We both can`t be wrong!

"Gettysburg 1863" has to be the best history lesson since "Alexander the Great" by Iron Maiden.

                  Learn while you headbang!

I bought the album about a month ago.

This is the first album of theirs I got (except for "Tribute to the Gods", which is all cover songs).

I was very impressed. I listened to it in my car when I got it and when I listen to stuff in my car I usually skip through looking for good songs. This disc I listened through strart to finish.

Ripper Owens fits these guys perfectly. He never fit well in Priest but he smokes on vocals in this band.

I can't remember what songs I liked in particular cause I liked the entire album so much.

If you want some metal with fast tunes, great vocals, great lyrics, great guitar work, then pick this album up.
